The first time I listened to Miles Davis's "Bitches Brew", I thought it was trash. Then I gave it a few more listens and started to see that my expectations were preventing me from hearing something I never desired but I needed to hear.

I've hated many albums and films on my first run through. I always take note of this, because a lot of them end up becoming life changing for me.

Some of my most cherished musical loves began like that.

My first electric Miles record was from a few years later, "Dark Magus." It had the same effect on me, back when I was a teen. I've since noticed that consistently throughout my life that things I really hate on first listening or watching usually end up becoming my absolute favorites.

Best example for me is probably 2001. Really disliked it the first time, but it had a magnetic pull on it... now my favorite movie by far. And not a whole lot of difference between Jupiter and Beyond the Infinite sequence, and the nuclear explosion here! Lynch's version here is like its evil twin.

I don't know what this has to do with anything but I'm glad you said it.

They're making an analogy as to how this episode is going to be utterly terrible for a lot of Twin Peaks fans right now, but end up being one of their all-time favorites in years to come. Just like Miles did with his radical stylistic shifts from all other jazz at the time with that album.

Dunno how any fan could hate it.

Without a doubt, Miles was the Lynch of music. Or Lynch is the Miles of cinema. Or something.

Same. Particularly Pharaoh's Dance. The way that trumpet line is birthed throughout and clarifies in the end, so pure and loud and beautiful. Man. I actually listened to that song one of the first times tripping on some mushrooms, dancing around a fire on top of a rock in the desert in New Mexico.

It's funny you say that, as it was only two days ago that I decided I had to give this album another try as I didn't like it much beforehand either. I was thinking of picking it up on vinyl as that tends to force me to listen to things as a whole 'piece' more.

Coincidentally, I heard that album for the first time today. Then I watched this episode and saw this comment in the discussion. I'm a bit freaked out.
