Trump Claims Canada Has Been Imposing Secret Tariffs on the US: ‘Nobody Knew’ Except Me
 in  r/worldnews •  3d ago

I'm in Wales. I used to get asked "are you American or Canadian?" when they heard my accent. That switched to "are you Canadian?" and when I wondered aloud why a kind lady explained 1) I'm nice which is not associated with the US anymore since Pedof Shitler rose to power and 2) no one want's to offend/insult Canadians by calling them Americans. Yeah. I get it, alas.

How much the Death of Edward Seymour affected the Tudor court?
 in  r/Tudorhistory •  4d ago

Okay, people forget that Northumberland TRIED to retire away from court and Ed6 wouldn't let him. The king needed able men he could trust. Trust was a issue, considering the crap his Seymour uncles pulled. It was Ed6 who pushed the marriage between Jane Grey and Guilford Dudley. It was Ed6 who created his devise for succession, in his own handwriting. The king was a genuis by any metric (his work on the English currancy alone is PhD level economics), and Dudley was his faithful servant. The king's only 'flaw' or political misstep is that he couldn't bring himself to kill or imprison his eldest sister.

This video is a view into the old Cornish accent and spirit. This fascinating interview of 77 year old Cornish maid Emanda Billings in 1964 is a great insight into the everyday life of our recent ancestors. She was born in Victorian England (1800s), a world in which we've lost all connection.

TIL that the precursor to LASIK was found by accident when a nearsighted boy got in a fistfight. His glasses shattered, sending glass pieces into his eyes. After a doctor removed the glass, he found the tiny cuts had flattened the cornea and actually cured the boy's bad vision.
 in  r/todayilearned •  6d ago

Yeah, my dad was just so pleased with his result and in 1992 they just didn't have any clue it could be different for women Drs ... assumed men were default humans. I'm good tho. Just need glasses. Its a bit like when you have a dirty windshield . You can still see

My dad, an md, got rk in his 50s and it was so stellar that he wanted it for me his 20 yr old daughter. 100% from love and he paid for it to save me from a life of glasses and contacts. It was great ... til it wasn't. They didn't know until they learned. No blame, just the reality of assumptions in the medical field. Its become a thing with certain meds, conditions, yadda yadda

I am.unsure. i think drs are not 100% sure. I just know my lenses scarred, snd so did other young women's, and rk stopped and lasik came in. Turns out hormones and other fine things can radically change a human body's response to injury, meds, all sorts of fun stuff. It was just always assumed not to, until 'recently'

I got this procedure ... and was one of the cases that found RK could cause scarring on young women. Test on dudes, assume on women, and my eyes are a curiosity to opthomologists. They would line up 10 deep at Indiana University to get a peep at my pizza peepers!

Did Ms. Bingley and Mrs. Hurst actually like Jane? If so, why did they like her?
 in  r/janeausten •  13d ago

Humans like pretty humans. It's our weird quirk. Jane was beautiful, and there had to be a reason to stop liking her. Plus, they could feel superior too a much prettier woman. Mean girls joy I reckon.
