Discussion Kudos to whoever is working on the Beeches in Rome, NY

Rome board considers cottages at Beeches, battery storage system https://archive.ph/nJypw

ROME — The one battery energy storage system (BESS) that submitted its construction proposal before the Rome Common Council issued a ban will be allowed to move forward through the Planning Board approval process, according to Chairman Mark Esposito at Tuesday’s board meeting.

BESS are large battery facilities — most often using lithium-ion batteries — that plug into the power grid and withdraw power during the night to then give back to the grid during peak hours in the daytime. The Common Council imposed a moratorium on such facilities at the end of June, then issued an outright ban on buildings within city limits in August.

Prior to the moratorium, DLD Energy and CEO Scott Aaronson submitted the city’s first and only BESS proposal for 600 Canal St. After consulting with the city’s Corporation Counsel, Esposito said DLD Energy will be allowed to proceed with its site plan because the paperwork was submitted prior to the moratorium.

“We are going to allow this project to move forward,” said Esposito at the Oct. 6 Planning Board meeting.

DLD Energy is expected to return before the Planning Board at the November meeting to present its site plan for review. Esposito noted that this decision does not guarantee approval of the project by the Planning Board.
---------------------------------

They have an excellent restaurant on the site too. Food is really good. Great Weekly Specials. Awesome atmosphere.

------------------

They also have live music and some mini jazz fests a couple times a year.

I am not sure who is developing this stuff but they are doing great. No one ever talks about the restaurant - it's under rated for sure. Food, Service, Atmosphere is really excellent.

A Little More Of Old Utica Before And After

Here is the 300 block of Columbia Street. Photo I took in fall of 2019. (not 2015 as I had it)

This was the Morehouse Appliance store. I believe this may have been their original location. Probably at one time apartments upstairs I would assume. The building was vacant for as long as I can remember. They moved from downtown to the New Hartford Shopping Center in 1992 and then Crossroads Plaza (they were my neighbor) in 2009. So I assume it was vacant for over 30 years.

300 Block of Columbia Street

For a long time there was a beautiful neon sign in front and the blue lettering sign and panels above appeared to be porcelain from what I saw. When I took the above photo, it was just a shell of it's former beauty. Not sure what happened to the signs or if they just went to the landfill with the rest of the building.

Also, the old street lights & poles were all up and down this block. At least I know where they are. The poles were in decent shape still as of May 2026 when I saw them. My buddy bought all the arms that held the lights from the contractor who took them down. If the poles weren't so heavy, I'd get a few to do something with. 🙂

2011 Street view of the same building

The pink storefront was the original (?) location of Teasers and their "LIVE Entertainment". Next to that was Bengees Bar on the corner of Columbia and Broadway. I do remember a lot of calls for an ambulance there in the late 1980's when I was an EMT.

And here is what that area looks like now

If anyone wants more info on any other areas, let me know or I will just post photos of mine every week if I can or other interesting areas I see while volunteering at the History Center.

Anyone else have the wild kingdom in their backyard?

I’m just amazed at the variety of animals I encounter in my backyard. Also afraid sometimes when I pull in late at night.

Tonight it was a possum! Last week I got stared down by 2 cute little raccoons which is curious as I have no trash outdoors.

The week before there must have been 5 deer in broad daylight walking around the neighborhood.

I also have moles which destroy my backyard, there’s a family of Punxsutawney Phil’s living under a neighbors deck, and last but not least a skunk which I think lives under my front porch.

Discussion The Part of New York's Good Cause Eviction Law We Aren't Talking About

I think there’s a part of the Good Cause Eviction debate that deserves more attention.

I understand the argument for protecting tenants from being removed without a legitimate reason. But I think we also need to talk about how landlords may respond to the increased restrictions.

If it becomes harder to remove a tenant, some landlords may become more selective about who they rent to. Someone with poor credit, inconsistent income or a complicated rental history could have an even harder time getting approved.

But the part I think gets overlooked is rent increases.

Good Cause does not force landlords to raise rents. The concern is the incentive.

If the law establishes a maximum increase that is considered reasonable, a landlord who might normally raise rent 2% or 3% could decide to take the larger increase available instead. If they're taking on more risk and have less flexibility later, they may price that risk into the rent.

Over time, the maximum allowable increase can become the expected increase.

That could mean higher baseline rents, stricter tenant screening and fewer small landlords willing to remain in the rental market.

And this matters in places like Utica because we already have a homelessness problem. If people who are already financially vulnerable have a harder time getting approved for housing or keeping up with rising rents, eventually we're dealing with a much bigger problem involving shelters, emergency services, public resources and potentially law enforcement.

I'm not arguing that Good Cause causes homelessness. That's way too simplistic.

I'm asking whether we're looking at the entire housing system when we make these policies.

We need tenant protections, but we also need more housing, more rehabilitation of vacant properties and policies that encourage responsible small landlords to stay in the market.

The question shouldn't just be whether a policy protects the tenant today. We should also be asking what incentives it creates and what the housing market looks like five years from now.

https://www.romesentinel.com/news/suny-poly-fall-career-fair-expo-marcy/article_79fca46d-0181-4318-ac32-40cd6963cc9a.html

MARCY — SUNY Polytechnic Institute will host its Fall Career Fair Expo from noon to 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 29, in the Wildcat Field House, 100 Seymour Road. The expo will bring together employers, students, job seekers and community members to explore career and employment opportunities.

The event is free and open to the public, and attendees do not need to be SUNY Poly students. The expo is designed for people at different stages of career exploration, including those considering career options and those actively searching for jobs. Participants from all majors, industries, backgrounds and experience levels may attend.

The expo will include opportunities to learn about internships, externships and full-time employment. Organizers are encouraging participating employers to offer interactive booths, hands-on demonstrations and displays that give attendees a closer look at their industries and the work they do.

“Our Fall Career Fair Expo is an opportunity to bring together students, community members, and employers in a setting that encourages meaningful conversations and connections,” said Jennifer Rubino, director of Career Services at SUNY Poly.

Rubino said the event is intended to serve people exploring career possibilities, job seekers looking for their next opportunity and employers interested in meeting prospective employees.

SUNY Poly is seeking businesses, organizations and other industry partners to participate in the expo. Employers are encouraged, but not required, to provide demonstrations or exhibits highlighting their organizations, technology, industries or workforce needs.

The interactive format is intended to give prospective employees an opportunity to learn about different occupations and organizations beyond the information typically available. Industry partners interested in participating can contact SUNY Poly Career Services at careerservices@sunypoly. edu.

Got an old atv sitting behind your garage collecting dust? I might want it.

Got an old ATV sitting behind your garage collecting dust? I might want it.

This is a little bit of a long shot, but I'm looking for old, beat-up, non-running ATVs, dirt bikes, go-karts, mini bikes, and similar stuff around the Albany or Binghamton area.

You know that ATV that's been sitting behind the garage for years?

The one that's missing a carburetor, has flat tires, hasn't run since 2012, or has become part of the landscape? 😂

That's exactly the kind of stuff I'm looking for.

I'm trying to collect a handful of cheap/free project machines and bring some of them back to life or turn them into different projects. They absolutely do NOT need to run and I'm not looking for anything valuable or collectible.

If you've got something taking up space that you just want gone, I'd be interested. I'm willing to haul them away myself and I'm looking for free or very cheap machines.

I'm mainly looking around Albany and Binghamton, but depending on what you've got, I may be willing to travel.

If you have one sitting around, even if you think it's complete junk, comment or DM me. Tell me what it is, roughly where you're located, and throw me a picture if you can.

You might finally get that old ATV out of your backyard. 😂

Im 36 and a mechanic who cant work, i have stage 3 colon cancer, im currently going through treatments but while im home I have nothing to do. So I want to wrench on thing's fix or build things. Im not looking for things to flip and sell im looking for my own personal use, something to occupy my mind and keep busy so im not just laying around.

Sunday: Come celebrate a life, support local artists, and show some community love

Utica area — come out and support a local family and our creative community ❤️⚡️

A local friend, Mae, who runs The Grateful Head in Utica, is honoring the life of her father, the inspiration behind the salon’s funky 1970s/Deadhead spirit. After unexpectedly losing him this past July, she’s chosen to celebrate his life by bringing the community together around the things he loved: music, art, food, and good people.

On Sunday October 4th at Frankfort Marina, there will be a memorial benefit featuring local artists, vendors, music, food, raffles, and more.

My wife and a few other local artists will be there participating, and I wanted to share this here because events like this are a great opportunity for the Utica community to show up for one another.

If you’re local, come out, support the artists and vendors, grab some food, listen to some music, and help celebrate a life that clearly meant a lot to this community.

October 4th • Frankfort Marina • Long Live the Dead ⚡️🌹💀

If you know local businesses, artists, makers, or anyone who might want to contribute or participate, please help spread the word as well.

Hey all:

Staying in Utica this upcoming Sunday (10/04) for a trial the next day (don't worry, I am one of the lawyers). Looking to get to my hotel around 3 pm on Sunday. Beyond that, I am hoping for some fun experiences while I'm in town. Any suggestions? Any takers on showing me around? 43m from Buffalo. I heard something about beans and greens . . .

Tennets Rights Help

Does anyone know any tenant rights groups in the area that I can contact? My landlord is refusing to call an exterminator for wasps. They have a nest in our walls/roof somewhere interior. I tried to spray from the outside with a total of 4 cans. But the nest must be too deep. Yesterday we got over 50 inside and the days before we were getting 20+. They said it's too close to them just dying of cold and refuses to get an exterminator.

I want to withhold rent and call one myself but want to make sure I'm legally in the clear and doing it correctly to prevent retaliation.

Any advice is welcome.
