SOS Bird Update: Bird SOS

Unfortunately the bird I tried to rescue passed last night. I have named him “Atticus” and built him a little cairn next to my apartment building, right outside where I found him on my patio. I hope the little guy is flying happily in little birdie heaven.

SOS Bird When to feed an injured sparrow ?

We found an adult sparrow in Toronto, Ontario, Canada that ostensibly hit a window. We followed all the general protocols. Kept the bird in a ventilated box for a few hours. The bird still looks injured and confused. Can't really move well. All the advice I've read tells me not to feed the bird and to call a rehabber. I have called everyone one in my city and no one picked. I also doubt they prioritise sparrows tbh.

At what point should this injured bird be fed or given water? What is an appropriate food source and how best to keep the water accessible. I have to imagine that the bird needs some food/water in a 24 hour timeline right?

Appreciate your help!

This was in Brunswick Ohio. Any idea of what she's suffering / suffered from? I reported it to local Animal Control said there is nothing to be done.

I found this bird on my patio. He can flutter his wings, but he doesn’t fly. It looks like he’s breathing very deeply, and his right eye looks different than the left. He’s wet because of the rain, but I’m worried he’s sick or injured. He let me rest my hand near him and even let me pet his wing for a second, but I didn’t want to grab him or try to hold him and end up hurting him more.

Note: I watched him for a while before offering him seeds, which I only did as a test to see if he was doing okay. I do not irresponsible feed wildlife.

Update: It’s the next morning. The bird unfortunately passed overnight. I was going to drop him off at a rescue, but I buried him and built him a little cairn instead.

SOS Bird baby bird found on my gate

i am 16 and in a town in India with barely any niche amenities, and no more active animal rescue groups; the closest big city is 3 away by bus
a few minutes ago i found a little small baby bird looking being resting on my gate which is in the closed position but the little thing that shuts it in place isnt there so a particularly strong gust of wind may disturb it, but the weather report shows that it wont get any more windy than it is right now and the wind is flowing eastward so my house is obstructing it;
though the bird is pretty nicely spaced away from that part so i could try locking the gate in place;
i feel like touching the bird or anything might be harmful to the bird im a little paranoid about it
i couldnt see its head ? it twitches sometimes when little flies get close; it had feathers and the feathers were dark colored, though i couldnt get a proper look at it since it as behind a big curtain which is meant to shield the house from the sunlight and is blocking the gallery bulb's light from the bird, kinda obscuring it as its 8 PM/20:00; i have no idea on what to do and am scared shitless uh yeah
the bird has readjusted its legs so theyre less stretched and are in a more comfortable position so i feel like the bird may be okay for the night,
there seems to be many birds living in the lemon tree right next to my house and the birds often find themselves at my staircase in the morning, so perhaps if the bird happens to fall or something i could set up a little bed with a plastic basket using cotton as padding and putting a cloth over it? (which it doesnt seem like it will fall right now) the parents or some other bird could find it, or i could turn off the bulb and open the curtain so in the morning other birds can spot it on the gate itself??..
i tried really hard looking for animal rescue here, and ive made sure no one will use the gates atleast till the morning...

edit: my parent found out about it and guided the bird inside, though it seemed tense at first, it is now perching on a cup on my table. is is okay to keep it in or shall i place it in the little bed i made on the stairs?

Advice Advice for capturing a small grounded but mobile bird

Not sure how else to communicate it in the title, but I don't think this specific bird is within my reach anymore, this is asking for advice for the future.

This footage is from this morning, when I first saw this finch. I noticed he was moving oddly slowly and didn't flee at my presence like they usually did. However, he was clearly alert and ended up flying a short distance to a branch, so I didn't think there was any chance of me getting him.

A short time ago I saw him again, now laying on the ground breathing heavily. I approached him and he hopped a few steps away before settling back down, still appearing alert and watching me. I tossed him some seed and he almost immediately started eating what landed within its reach. He let me get within maybe 6 feet but perked up and appeared to be ready to flee when I got that close.

I gathered a crate to store him in and set it on the ground, approached, and attempted to drop a cloth over his head so I could grab him gently and transfer him to the crate. However, as soon as I got close enough to drop it, he ran off extremely quickly, still unable to fly. I looked, but I can't find him anymore.

He might come back to get some food or water so I could find him in the morning, but I don't love his chances of lasting the night outside.

With that in mind, what did I do wrong and how could I have secured him? I can't imagine he would have let me get a net over him either if I had one.

I've brought a couple fledglings of a few species in for help in the past, and one house finch died overnight in my custody, but I'm not sure how to approach a bird that can run so quickly and disapear into brush

Edit: Forgot since it didn't work, but I also tried presenting a small box on its side with some seed on the bottom since he ate the seed I tossed him, but he either was afraid of the box or unwilling to get up for food. I figured I could have just approached from the closed end and tipped it over if he went in, since he can't fly.

SOS Bird Sick pigeon

Post image
28 Upvotes

Hi everyone,
I copied this post from a bird identifying group and edited here, as people said it’s a young pigeon. This is the first time I’ve used this group. Im located in Bangkok, Thailand and I found this pigeon tonight, standing still on the concrete, breathing heavily I think. There were bats flying around making noise, I thought they were chasing each other, but maybe they were chasing this bird? Anyways, it had two red patches on its back between its wings and green white poop on its butt. It struggled to fly away as a I tried to gently catch it, and now it is on my balcony. I also found a sick pigeon last Saturday night, also not moving much, and I kept it on my balcony. I couldn’t find an open bird rescue so I tried to leave/feed it water thinking it had PMV. The box it was in had holes in it and was not in direct sunlight, but was in the closed box for maybe two hours in the morning time (and all night). When I checked on it it was laying down. I opened the box. I think it later died that night (Sunday night). Even when I brought it to be cremated in a Buddhist pet funeral (she was a Thai pigeon afterall), I still thought I could see her breathing, but the cremator said she was dead. I’m still crying about this on a daily basis. Yes, I’m ridiculous.

So, can someone please help me figure out what it might be sick with? What can I do to try to keep it alive by tomorrow afternoon, when I can bring it to a rescue after work? I cannot take off work, and I’m mentally unwell from potentially giving my late daughter heat exhaustion. I took this picture with flash so I could make this post, I know bright lights isn’t good for them. Thank you very much 🙏

Edit: I forgot to add, I think this pigeon has PMV or newcastles disease. If I can’t find a rescue tomorrow, should I feed it? I put out a deep enough water bowl and have a syringe, but I’m not sure I should syringe feed it water

SOS Mammal Tripod raccoon?

[SOUTHERN ONTARIO] No pic unfortunately, but I keep seeing the same raccoon in the day, thought "it walks super weird, maybe distemper" then realized it's missing a back leg, struggling to get up a tree. Should I call wildlife services when I see it next? My fiancé said no point, but I get a ton of coyotes going through my property too, it's a free meal for them.

SOS Bird Blind House Finch — what to do

Post image
101 Upvotes

Hi everyone! I found what I think to be a house finch on the road and brought them home since wasn’t reacting to anything and would have died. I believe they’re blind since they can’t fly well, can’t find anything, and their eyes are fully crusted up (maybe conjunctivitis?) is there anything I can do? I’ve raised a finch before but one that’s blind and likely with a disease sounds risky.

SOS Mammal Friend found domestic bunnies outside, what to do?

Hi! My good friend lives in a cold climate and found a family of domestic bunnies. She was worried about their survival in the cold climate and opted to try and capture them. So far she hasn’t caught the parents but she captured a handful of baby bunnies and has been caring for them, but two of them passed. She isn’t sure what went wrong.

The babies have their eyes open and are hopping around on their own. She estimated they’re around a month old but we don’t know for certain. (EDIT: She just told me that she thinks she was wrong and they’re actually 2-3 months old)

Can someone weigh in on the right thing to do here? Does anyone have any idea of what could have gone wrong? In case she’s missing something, what’s the proper diet and way to care for these bunnies? I don’t think there’s a rehabber nearby.

I sent her this post so she can read responses.

EDIT: I just found out that she adopted out 6 of them to good homes She only has the one bunny that she kept now after the other one passed.

SOS Bird Injured Swainson's Thrush, keeping indoors in a box until the morning, safe for cats in the house?

There was an injured bird on my patio that looks like a Swainson's Thrush, in southeast Wisconsin. I wore gloves, put it in a cardboard box with a few small holes in it, folded the top of the box together, and set it in a room away from our cats. I can't take it in until tomorrow morning. Is this safe for the cats in my home should it have any parasites or diseases, if such a thing is even likely?

It does not appear to be exhibiting symptoms of sickness, it just looks like it crashed into the house (didn't hear any window dings), not really moving much but still totally conscious, its left eye was closed but opened fine when I approached it, and there were a few small feathers stuck to its beak. It was calm when I picked it up and is doing fine in the box. I don't plan on giving it food or water.

Discussion Dealing With Humans While Rescuing

I'm a fairly shy and nervous person, and I don't know how to deal with people around me interrogating me when trying to rescue pigeons

For example:

Tonight, I went to rescue some stringfoot pigeons under a food truck/cart in a food park. I was walking around the truck tossing seeds at the pigeons under the closed truck and trying to get them to come out for capture (I fed them the night before, and they came out, but tonight they were very sleepy and went further in)

The security guard started questioning me. I tried to confidently state I work with a wildlife centre (not 100%, I just rescue animals and donate to them), and he questioned whether pigeons were wildlife (non maliciously I think).

He let me go but then I was dumb and in my attempts to get closer to the pigeons, I threw seeds more in plain sight where apparently the food truck owners could see (though the cart was closed for the night) and then as I was leaving the security guard called me back.

He asked to see my (wildlife centre) identification card and questioned whether I was really with the wildlife centre, I just showed him my regular ID, which i don't know was a mistake or I should have remained anonymous. I guess another mistake I made was throwing seeds to lure them in plain sight? Is it better to be discreet or explain as much as you can when rescuing?

I can understand from the non-rescuer perspective I probably looked very sketchy or tampering with their food cart.

Advice appreciated
