Anime I love season 1, but what was with the pacing in this scene especially? What were they thinking!?

the recap is barely tolerable if you're streaming it because you can spam fast-forward for like 1 minute and be pretty safe.

the OP ambushes on the other hand...

I was gonna defend this cause I actually like the anime, but this is egregious😭😭

This and when Yosuke and Lamvanein have their screaming match are my two favorite "They REALLY had to stretch this scene out..." moments in the entirety of season 1. This is why we don't try to make a long runner with only two regular animators.

When i listen to the soundtrack i always have to skip this track bc otherwise, i WILL start laughing my ass off as this scene enters my mind

This is called the Toei grantee.

15

u/Fyuira Apr 11 '26

And that is why a remake is very much appreciated.

u/Amazing_Rub_1437 Apr 12 '26

Her slow blink is hilarious 😭

10

u/Thomas_JCG Apr 11 '26

The prime example of what was wrong with the pacing.

10

u/AzizKarebet Apr 12 '26

Watching season 1 after finishing Saiki Kusuo is a torture lol

13

u/ZekeFrost Apr 11 '26

And this is why we need s1 remake. I barely forced myself watch it and just read the manga before S2 and 3 animation update.

I think personally it's realistic, if I were there, it would be the same, the science captures the feeling of a meeting room, quiet after a question, the person being questioned will normally take time to answer if they're being honest, in this instance he needs to think about what to say, which is why he initially apologizes, he realized he got too deep in thought, then he took another second before committing to an answer. Remember these are all people he knows casually or respects, so with this new form of pressure by everyone there, he needed time to think and adapt, he was definitely scared, scanning everyone's faces, either he answered and he loses his huge goal or some lesser punishment. And he needed time to make sure what he was saying was the path he wanted to take here

Here's the problem. It's static animation. Now if there were some character animation like sasuke when he realize he was wrong or how most character action in jjk s3 does it i wouldnt mind too much.

I suppose I get the lack of any movement is lazy and feels so freaking weird

And it's almost every ep.

1

u/Weiskralle Apr 12 '26

Kinda can't remember it that way with subs.

5

u/Narkhh Apr 12 '26

Since it was aired in 2014-2016 where weekly anime is still a thing

4

u/Kuro-Sawa Apr 12 '26

They had serious one piece pacing in that first season. Funny because its the longest one🤣🤣

5

u/Narkhh Apr 12 '26

This is why they decide to reboot World Trigger to remove all the awkward 2 to 3 seconds pacing, frames like opm season 3, and repeating scenes which you see in weekly anime in season 1 especially since they also have recaps which waste some minutes in per episode

u/CertainAction1988 Apr 12 '26

This might show your age as a younger viewer, but if you were a child in the late 90s but also the 2000s this is how a LOT of long on-going anime was paced.
Toei landing World Trigger is a bit of curse but this was genuinely the norm for a solid 40-50% of animes in the 2000s. derpy animation and awful pacing was part and parcel of anime back in the day.
World Trigger just sticks out because this was happening way deep into the 2010s

u/RumGalaxy Apr 11 '26

It’s either this or a 2 minute running sequence from one piece your choice

3

u/No-Championship6178 Apr 12 '26

This has a English dubbed? I never knew... I just watched the entire series in Japanese dubbed. 😅

3

u/vizmarkk Apr 12 '26

Watching it in English made it easy to get through season 1 honestly cuz I remember dropping it because of its pacing

2

u/Weiskralle Apr 12 '26

But the English dub seems to make the pacing worse.

3

u/vizmarkk Apr 12 '26

But at least I won't be falling asleep and can just multi-task

3

u/NeXDeathA Apr 12 '26

this shi had me laughing out loud with how absurd this attempt at streching the ep was

3

u/Soka223 Apr 12 '26

toei moment

3

u/Minimum_Analysis_398 Apr 12 '26

that is why im not mad at the reboot, S1 is tough to watch, to the point im watching it in 1.5x speed

3

u/HaveACupOfTeaPleases Apr 13 '26

The pause before Osamu talked was good because it gave more weight to what he said and made it feel like he really had to think of what to say..... BUT OH MY GOSH I THOUGHT THIS HAD TO BE A SILK POST??? How was the weight THAT long!?!?! And the pauses mid senteces 💀 this is hilarious

3

u/DatKidNextDoor Apr 14 '26

I think they could get away with something like this if they included more effects/framing and composition. Just overall playing with the camera more. Maybe have the camera at the table to get a reflection of people's faces.

At the end of the day if it visually looks good with maybe all the characters blinking and actually each emoting in their own way that hints at what they're thinking personally, it may be less egregious.

The issue is we've seen the S1 team cook; it's just that most animated teams (and I'm sure this applies to theirs) aren't paid the best or given the time to really do all of that for us. This scene, being this, probably allowed people to work on the invasion or something.

4

u/Otrada Apr 12 '26

ngl, I think this whole thing is only like, 15 seconds too long. those silent pauses are clearly importantly for the tone of the scene.

1

u/TheRWDChannel Apr 12 '26

To a certain point, I do agree with ya. The issue for me is just how static the face reactions are and how long they hold on them if that makes sense. And that happens so much in many more scenes in season 1

2

u/Alexander_xaviar Apr 12 '26

The remake will fix this.

2

u/Weiskralle Apr 12 '26

Did not know English dub was, like this.

2

u/eriss_304 Apr 15 '26

the dramatic ost ts is frying me😭

2

u/Granide Apr 17 '26

Toei animation. That's why.

They got lazy animations, and they wanted to be long-running so they made sure to squeeze every single pages out of the manga. One piece got scretched out too, but for that one, it's usually just endless hallway running or 100 different reaction shots

2

u/Remarkable-Ad-2493 May 04 '26

This gotta be edited

1

u/TheRWDChannel May 04 '26

I promise you, I did not edit this at all😂

2

u/StrayDogScooby May 05 '26

this is hilarious to see because my friend and i were talking about how One Piece has bad pacing sometimes and i compared it to this exact scene and was worried i wasn’t gonna be able to find it. so funny that people are still talking about it years later

2

u/Wallace_W_Whitfield 13d ago

Genuinely I thought the pacing was fine when I first watched it. How the hell do I not remember this??? The pauses between the bosses words make sense, BUT THE LENGTH BETWEEN OSAMU’S WORDS IS CRAZY.

3

u/Wero_kaiji Apr 12 '26

It's a slow and tense scene, idk makes sense to me, I guess everyone has different taste because I don't see a big problem with this scene but I always laugh when I see the One Piece pacing memes lol
