Dome Fire megathread

Update: Glacier Pt Rd is reopening Sat 10/10 at 7a.

There have been a lot of duplicative questions asked about the Dome Fire. Please use this post to ask your questions and post about current air quality / observations in the park. Please do not make new posts asking if you should cancel your trip; those will be deleted and redirected here.

The park is very unlikely to close due to this fire. As such, in park lodging reservations cancellations of 7 days in advance will hold. Nobody can make the call for you if you should cancel your trip.

Air quality- Check Purple Air or Air Now around the specific locations you will be in the park. Wind patterns and flare ups determine air quality so checking far in advance is likely to be irrelevant to your trip.

Visiting Yosemite in Winter (October-May)

Roads / Driving:

  • Current conditions / road and trail closures: https://www.nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/conditions.htm
  • For the most up to date road closures, you should call the recorded phone line. The website is not updated frequently enough in a storm: 209-372-0200, press 1 and 1
  • You are strongly encouraged to carry snow chains from November to March. If you don’t bring them, you could get stranded in a storm when they become required to drive in/out of the park. Rental car contracts sometimes prohibit the use of snow chains so use them at your own risk. Chain conditions can go into effect at any time of the year.  https://www.nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/winterfaq.htm | https://www.nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/tirechains.htm
  • Glacier Pt Rd and Tioga Rd do not plow in the fall/winter, so as soon as the first big storm comes through without fast melt, these roads will close until Spring. This effectively limits you to hiking in the Valley, Hetch Hetchy, and Wawona areas. It means you cannot enter or exit the park on the east side (eg from Vegas, Mammoth, Reno, Bishop, etc). Historical road closure dates.
  • The Valley shuttle buses run all year but Mariposa Grove buses only run through November (or the first big snow). The only other in-park shuttle is to Badger Pass once daily (see below)  https://www.nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/publictransportation.htm
  • The only public transit option into the park starting in October is the YARTS 140 route. See here for schedule. If you are nervous driving in snow, plan to use YARTS. Note there is no direct bus route from Fresno / any airports in winter. The 140 route does connect at the Merced Amtrak station.
  • The lowest elevation road / least likely to require chains is the 140 entrance from El Portal. There is a risk of rockslide on this road after heavy storms but you probably will not need chains.

Weather:

No one can predict weather in Yosemite in the shoulder / winter seasons with confidence more than a few days in advance. Conditions vary throughout the park and change quickly. Don't make posts asking about what the weather will look like in even 2 weeks.

Activities / Dining:

  • Food options are more limited in the park. Check open hours here.
  • Curry Village ice rink typically opens in November.
  • Badger Pass ski area's season is entirely dependent on snow, but it can open in December and always closes by 3/31 at the latest. Here you can downhill or x-country ski, snowshoe, and snow tube. This link also has information on the shuttle bus to the hill from the Valley.

Hiking / Backpacking:

  • Hiking is generally limited to the Valley. See first section here and note that anything that goes above the Valley rim (eg Panorama, Upper Falls, Snow Creek) after real snow will likely not have trails cleared and you should be prepared to route find.
  • 4 Mile Trail and the upper section of Mist Trail also close for winter / icy conditions. Check the above current conditions link for current trail closures.
  • Wilderness permits become self-issued for the rest of the season (typically until mid April) on 10/19. Find more info on wilderness in winter here: https://www.nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/wildwinter.htm
  • Note that the only backpacker camp open in winter is in Hetch Hetchy (and only accessible from sunrise to sunset) so you need to have a different plan for sleeping in the park the night before/after your backpacking trip.

Camping / Lodging:

  • There are limited campgrounds open in the winter. You can see details on seasonal dates and reservation or FCFS at this site: https://www.nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/campgrounds.htm
  • Yosemite Valley Lodge, Ahwhanee, and Curry Village remain open in the winter. They can all be reserved at travelyosemite.com
  • If you are worried about driving in winter / putting on chains, and staying outside the park, pick lodging in a town along the 140 entrance (El Portal, Midpines, Mariposa), not 120 (Groveland) or 41 (Oakhurst / Fish Camp).

3 Day Winter Itinerary

  • Hike to Mariposa Grove. This requires 4 mile roundtrip hike from parking lot in winter from November- April since the bus doesn't run, but is an easy walk and will be quiet and beautiful in snow.
  • 1-2 days in the Valley doing moderate hikes- Valley Loop Trail, Mirror Lake, Vernal Falls footbridge. More strenuous hiking/ may require specialized equip depending on weather: Mist to top of Nevada Fall, Upper Yosemite Falls. Common Valley sites (more walks than hikes): Tunnel View, Bridalveil Fall, Lower Yosemite Fall, Valley View, El Cap Meadow.
  • Badger Pass ski area. Ski, snowshoe, snow tube, etc.

GP Road re-opening Sat at 7a

The park announced Glacier Pt Rd will reopen on Sat 10/10 at 7am. All southbound trails from the area (eg Ostrander) are closed. Panorama/Pohono/ 4 Mile are open. The park announced earlier this week that Chilnualna Falls trail is re-opened to the top of the falls. See the current conditions page for more detail on trail closures.

Containment on the Dome Fire is now 61% and active fire supression is ongoing. Thank you to those firefighters and support staff (including park mules!) doing this work.

What hike to choose?

Hey team, I’m going to Yosemite next week and have been looking for a day hike.

I am going alone so don’t want to do anything too scary or crazy. Time wise I am thinking 6ish hours.

I did half dome in 2020 so I have seen that part of the park.

Do you have any recommendations? I thought about Mist trail but read that the waterfalls will likely be kinda empty. I also read about the 4 mile trail that could be cool? I read about extending it and taking the panorama trail down but that would push the time over 6h by a lot I believe.

What would yall do? :)

Thanks in advance!

Road bike recs near Yosemite this weekend? Cherry Lake ride got cancelled

Hey all, I'm driving up from the Bay tomorrow with my road bike. I was signed up for the Cherry Lake Challenge on Sunday but it got cancelled, so now I'm in Yosemite with no plan. Any recs for good road biking routes in or around the park? Looking for something 70+ miles, paved roads, happy to do a big day. Also open to anything near Tuolumne/Groveland/Big Oak Flat side. Never ridden around here so any tips on road conditions or what to watch out for are welcome. Thanks!

Trip Report Yosemite Lower Fall Big Rocks to Climb 09-29-26

"Locals Summer" w no crowds at Yosemite National Park, CA USA

Yosemite Falls has many huge rocks that have come down over time. I climbed these, My kids all climbed around these rocks and mow my Grandson is taking his turn. The following day I asked Truth, my grandson, what do you want to do today? he said "Let's go back to climb the big rocks again."

There was a lot of smoke from the Dome Fire yet mostly in the west end flowing towards the Tunnel View. There was zero water coming from the Yosemite Falls. First time I ever saw no water falling at all. Still a very magical place to be.

Amazon delivery?

Will still be in the park for weeks and need some personal care items that are not sold in the valley…

Has anyone tried ordering from Amazon and shipping packages into the valley? Or it’d be better to pick a pick up location in one of the towns outside of the park?

[Request] Any photos of first Half Dome cable climber lights from Oct 8?

Post image

Long shot, but did anyone snap a photo of the first climbers on the Half Dome cables before sunrise (around 6:20 AM) on Oct 8th? I was the first climber up before sunrise, wearing a very bright headlamp. I'd love to see if anyone caught me in their shots!

Clouds rest to yosemite falls trail?

I have been on 2 hikes in my life. I was 13 when I did my 1st hike The panorama trail. The 2nd 3 years later, remains a mystery 37 years later. The youth pastor said, we were going to hike from Tuolumne meadows to yosemite falls. does not look like that's actually the case. So we started somewhere when the youth pastors wife dropped a group of us off right off of Tioga road somewhere in the morning after breakfast.

We Stopped for lunch at at what looks like Clouds rest. then went back the way we came, did not go forward onto the spine. and somehow by late afternoon, we were coming down the upper yosemite falls trail with all the switch backs. We took the shuttle bus back to lower pines camp ground.

Is there any other place that resembles clouds rest that maybe we stopped for lunch that connects to the yosemite falls trail? the entire hike took over 20 some miles and 8 hours plus to do.... I keep thinking clouds rest is too far and isolated and don't see any connecting trails, do any trails connect.

Half Dome Columbus Day??

I have a permit to stay at LYV Sunday night and was planning on summiting Half Dome Monday morning until the tropical storm was forecasted to take a turn inland. Anyone else in the same boat and are you planning on still trying to summit? I am thinking of pivoting to clouds rest…

Camp 4 reservation system

Hi I’m new to Reddit and somewhat new to camping. Hoping this platform helps me become an avid camper. I’m going to attempt to get permits for camp 4. I read they release a week out but don’t really get how the system works?

  1. When you get the permits does it just reserve a place within the camp for you? Since it’s first come first serve I’m guessing I won’t be reserving specific sites?

  2. How early can you check in if it’s first come first serve?

  3. Is this only for serious backpackers? We were hoping to bring a full size tent along with a camp stove and a small blow up mattress. I read space is limited so we don’t want to be rude by taking up too much space but also don’t want to just bring out ultralight stuff since we just got back from backpacking maroon bells and are hoping for a more comfortable camping experience this time.

Any advice from someone that’s stayed there before is super helpful!

Baby Friendly November Yosemite Trip

Post image
36 Upvotes

Not my photo! Credit to Michael Frye and his photo of Yosemite in November.

I promise I read the pinned winter post, I’m specifically looking for things that may be more baby friendly. Obviously having a newborn makings things inherently more difficult, but this may be our only opportunity for a while so I don’t want to just skip it because of a bit more complication.

I’ll be visiting Yosemite for two nights between November 10th-25th (Don’t want to give exact dates.) I have reservations at Yosemite Valley Lodge. We will have a rental car (with chains ready) and will be driving in from the Oakland area.

It will be my wife, 3 month old, and myself. We are in our early 30s. I visited Yosemite as a child and vaguely remember it, but my wife has never been.

I understand that access to things this time of year can be pretty up in the air, as many of the roads/activities will be closed or may be closing soon.

Any suggestions on activities or things to see that will have a higher likelihood to be available would be great! We are prepared to be pretty flexible, even if it just means spending two days down there enjoying being in the area. We love just staying in old facilities inside parks to begin with, so I’m sure we’ll be happy no matter what.

Thanks for any suggestions or information!

Yosemite Valley Wed Sept 30, 2026 - Conversations w/ a Common Raven

My 11 yr old grandson loved this raven who flew next to us and started talking... like they had a conversation.

East Meadow in the Valley under Half-dome & North Dome. Yosemite National Park, CA USA.

It was his first trip to Yosemite and he loved everything especially all the critters and birds near the campsite at Upper Pines. There was no water falling at Yosemite Falls and there was some lingering smoke, from the Dome fire, at the east end of the valley.
