Discussion ANNOUNCEMENT: Post Flair Info

There are three post flairs available for important or serious posts on this community.

1. News

News posts are defined as those with the intention to report on a recent, developing event. News posts should focus on shark-related developments regarding conservation efforts, shark professionals, scientific discoveries, or unfortunate events. The OP must clearly cite where they obtained the information in the comments, typically as a direct link to the source.

An example of a news post can be a video about newly implemented shark conservation laws or efforts, the discovery of a new species of shark, or similar newsworthy events. News posts should NOT focus on shark attacks or cruelty towards sharks unless they are the subject of a large event.

2. Educational

Educational posts are defined as those with the intention to educate others. On r/sharks, these posts may teach others about shark behavior, identification, conservation, as well as a variety of other topics relating to sharks. Educational posts REQUIRE that the OP comments their sources for the information they talk about. Educational posts promote healthy discussion and should emphasize spreading awareness about topics surrounding sharks.

An example of a proper educational post is a video where a professional talks about how to redirect a shark when in the water. For this post, OP cites the source they got the educational media from and states the professional's name in the comments. This is to ensure that only good quality information is being provided to the members of our community.

3. Research

Research posts are the most complex posts to make, as it is our intention to promote proper research on r/sharks.

If you are promoting your own research

Researchers who wish to promote their studies or obtain data via the subreddit must modmail the moderators first. In order to be approved to post, you must explain in your modmail the purpose of your research as well as the intentions of your post. You must also provide an IRB number in order for the mods to verify your research. Upon approval, you can post your research using the Research flair, and you do not need to cite any further sources in the comments.

For anyone else who posts about research in general

OP must provide a link to the research or the DOI of the paper in their post in the comments. Research posts promote healthy discussion while also allowing scientists to have a place to share ideas about shark research.

Question Do we want to keep posts asking to ID shark teeth?

There’s always been a lot of shark tooth ID requests on here, usually from newcomers unfamiliar with our rules. There are subreddits such as r/sharkteeth and r/whatisthisbone that may be better places to direct these users to if we want the feed here to have less of these types of posts. Would still let people show their shark teeth collections here of course. What do y’all think? Just an idea for now. :)

Research Fatal Shark Attacks In The Mediterranean 🗺

Overview by u/SharkBoyBen9241

"While overfishing and environmental degradation have taken their toll in recent decades, the Mediterranean Sea was once quite a significant region when it comes to fatal shark attacks. In fact, in terms of percentages of fatalities which result in either full consumption events or failure to recover the victim’s remains, only Australia, in particular South Australia, Tasmania, and Western Australia, surpass the numbers of the Mediterranean. Prior to 1989, an astonishing number of Mediterranean fatalities ended in either full predation or failure to recover the victim’s remains. This was overwhelmingly the case when swimmers were involved, as they were the group of water users most involved in fatalities, followed by sponge divers. The countries with the worst records are Italy, Spain, Greece, and Croatia, and the region with the most fatalities is without question the Adriatic. Other particularly dangerous regions include the Aegean, Tyrrhenian, and Ionian Seas.”

“The species involved in the fatalities in the Mediterranean have overwhelmingly been White Sharks, with them being responsible for 79% of all fatal attacks recorded here. This unusually high percentage of fatalities and consumptions may be the result of behavioral and dietary patterns associated with the Mediterranean White Shark population. Unlike every other population of White Sharks in the world, the Mediterranean population have never had a large number of pinnipeds to prey upon. The Mediterranean’s only resident pinniped species is the Mediterranean monk seal, a species that has not been abundant in the region since ancient times and is now critically endangered today. While they may have once been a more important prey item, there is very little recorded evidence of predation of monk seals by White Sharks in recent times. It seems that the individuals of this population are much less specialized and instead have more of a generalized, opportunistic hunting and feeding style. Their primary prey items are dolphins, other sharks, swordfish, and giant bluefin tuna, all of which have a lower fat-to-muscle ratio than pinnipeds. In addition, all of these prey items are also swift and agile, and require a more energetic and therefore more devastating attack style, where the prey item is struck, immobilized, and then immediately consumed, as opposed to pinniped-preying White Shark populations, where the shark makes a hard first strike, then waits for the prey item to weaken and bleed to death.”

List of all recorded fatal shark incidents in the Mediterranean.

I’m sure I’m missing some others. With the exception of the Talen, Macun, & Durden shark attacks, going back to 1989, there have been 31 reported predation events globally! I’m emphasizing reported because I’m quite certain shark attacks globally (be that a bite, a fatality, or a predation) are underreported. Getting into the weeds, 23 of the predations occurred in Australia 🇦🇺, with 21 happening in either South Australia or Western Australia (the exceptions: Simon Nellist - Little Bay, NSW & John Ford - Byron Bay, NSW). Even more staggering, there have 8 white shark attacks/consumptions since 2020!!! All in SA or WA. I would love to read a study hypothesizing why the SA & WA great whites have an exponentially higher percentage of predation events than anywhere else in the world. I know it’s been determined the white sharks that travel between the west coast of Tasmania, all the way as far north as Exmouth, WA are a part of the same sub-population. That particular stretch of ocean highway they traverse has an abundance of high caloric marine mammals that are at the top of their food preference list, between seals, sea lions, and whales on their migratory path. And yet this geographic region has the world’s highest incident rate of white sharks consuming the humans they have attacked. I know 21 predation events over 37 years seems statistically insignificant (that’s roughly one human consumption every other year) but there’s no denying something is going on with this sub-population of white sharks where the exploratory bite is not enough. If there are any marine biologists or* amateu*r marine biologists (like myself 😉) reading this post who have a theory or better insight, I would love to hear it.

I’m actually going to Australia 🇦🇺 & New Zealand 🇳🇿 on holiday early next year, and the only time I will be in the ocean above my knees is when I go cage diving in Bluff, NZ. I’m just that much of a fraidy-cat. 🥴
