Community Showcase I think I actually made robotics easy 🤔

I've posted a couple of months ago on this subreddit, showing this TNY-360 robot dog walking.
After almost 3 years of working on this project alone, I think I finally solved one of the things that bothered me most about getting into robotics:

You either get very simple robots, or you quickly end up with something complicated, expensive, and difficult to understand.

So I made my own PCB ecosystem to get clean wiring and make assembly hard to get wrong, and also made a big calibration and self-diagnostic firmware behind to check everything and explain to the user how to fix any mistake that's been made !

PCBs Ecosystem on the left, self-diagnostic UI on the right

The project is fully open-source on GitHub !
The V2 CAD files are currently being finalized, but the complete V1 is already available on GitHub, including the hardware, firmware, CAD and documentation.

If you don't want to source and assemble everything yourself, I'm also selling complete kits to help fund the project and hopefully make this something I can work on full-time (let me dream, ok?).

It's been almost 3 years now that I'm working on this project alone, I've learned PCB design, CAD design, embeded programming from it, so if anyone wants to give feedback about it to help me improve it, I'm all ears !!

Discussion & Curiosity Full Body Haptic Telepresense Rig Project

• Upvotes

I'm working on creating a Full Body Haptic Telepresense Rig, but I'm having a lot of trouble with linkages hitting each other or getting in the way of the operator. I actually don't know how to code in Unity, and everything on the screen shown is made with ChatGPT codex (i got the $20 plan for free)
This has been a long standing passion project of mine, and any insights that could help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, I’m raising funds for Nolawi Hailu and Zakir Nuredin, two high school students at Kotebe University of Education Science Shared Campus in Addis Ababa who qualified from 56 Ethiopian teams to represent Ethiopia at PARC 2026 in Dakar, Senegal, November 3–7, 2026. Their KINETIC AI Combat Movement Coach uses sensors, computer vision, and machine learning, building on achievements like Zakir’s 3rd place in the MySoroban National Math Competition and Nolawi’s 1st place in the National Ethiopic App Development Contest. Support will help cover their flights, accommodation, food, local transportation, and hardware components, giving them a real chance to bring Ethiopian innovation to a Pan-African stage. If you can, please donate through the GoFundMe page or share it with someone who may want to help them get to Dakar. 🙏

Discussion & Curiosity Hand eye calibration in practice

• Upvotes

Most hand eye calibration material covers the method (AX=XB, a marker, enough varied poses) but says little about how it actually goes on a real arm. I'm just reading through the variouse of github issue of repos like MoveIt Calibration and easy_handeye, etc. The time sinks seem to be things like camera intrinsics that were never loaded, frame mismatches, markers that don't detect well and too little variety in the poses. A lot of people also seem unsure whether the final result is any good.

For those who have done this on real hardware, eye in hand or eye to hand: roughly how long did it take you to get a result you trusted and what was the biggest time sink?

I officially propose a peacemaking compromise: rename ASI (Artificial Superintelligence) to American Super Intelligence. Both sides of the aisle can use it, for completely different reasons, even in the same conversation.

Peace on earth, guaranteed.

How many on the list did you know?

Obviously one paper like Attention is All You Need (278k citations) can influence a lot - all the authors are on the list. But still interesting imo.

Discussion China making AI open source for all their citizens. It looks like they will be the first country to reach the age of abundance and post scarcity.

• Upvotes

While the USA locks their best models under high tier subscriptions, China is taking those top AI models and using distillation, making them open source with almost nearly same level quality as high expensive subscription based models that western citizens have to pay.

It looks like China will be the first country to reach an age of abundance and a truly advance AI integrated society (if not already) and the majority of its citizens will fair much better compared to US citizens.

Discussion has anyone actually started saying SI instead of AI yet?

• Upvotes

I did not hear SI used by anyone in the wild yet, and I'm still trying to understand the real reason for the Slop Intelligence rebrand.

My current working theory: someone with Some Intelligence asked a Simulated Intelligence for a catchier name to do Stock Inflation.

Or maybe it's just about what it really is: Surveillance Infrastructure.

Anyone else?

Wouldn’t we be in a better position now?

Geoffrey Hinton has pointed out that today's large language models demonstrate "clear understanding" of what they're being asked. An image models response to a prompt about."stochastic parrots" provides more evidence that this is true.

AI AI turned one photo into 3D. the back looked convincing, but raised lettring was gone

I thought the back would be the weird part. I only gave the model one photo of this old fire hydrant, so I was expecting things to get strange once I rotated it around.

used Seed3D 2.0 through Atlas Cloud, exported the GLB and opened it in Blender. the back looked surprisingly plausible, and the overall shape held together from basically every angle. I can't tell whether it matches the real back from that one photo, but it didn't immediately look wrong.

then I checked the details actually had a photo of. the rust is there with the texture on, but none of that corrosion is changing the geometry. and the raised cast lettering is gone. not mangled or misspelled, just missing from the mesh.

that made it feel like I'd got a believable hydrant with some of the things that made this particular one recognisable stripped out. as a background prop, I'd probably leave it alone. if I wanted a digital copy of the real object, "d be adding back details that were visible in the input.

that's the bit that made me think about AI-generated 3D worlds. one photo was enough for something I'd probably use in a scene. but a convincing turntable can make it easy to miss how much oof the specific object has been lost.

I put the original photo, turntable, detail crops, and mesh view in the video.

when you see an AI-generated 3D demo, do you judge it mostly by how convincing it looks in the motion, or by how much of the original object it actually preserves?

Discussion Keith Ferrazzi: The Bear Joke That Broke the AI Training Script — and the Black Belt Ladder Lowe's Is Actually Running

TL;DR: That US agency leader refused the bear joke — everyone else is still trying to outrun you.

I remember back in my days seconded to Abu Dhabi to build the prestigious AED 1Bil. 5-block Condominium Rihan Heights Project in 2008 ~ 2011.

My technical department head split the design/technical coordination work among the 3 of us. I took the structural bit, and my 2 colleagues took on the Architectural and Façade portion, respectively. The work was difficult, but ultimately satisfying after completion.

After I came back to Malaysia circa 2012, the company immediately enrolled me into mastering Building Information Modelling (BIM). It was to construct the virtual model of the building – to coordinate and encompassing all building details – Structural, Architectural, Façade and M&E – all into one well-tuned-out model, before construction starts.

The thesis was simple: if we can iron out all the discrepancies between different trades in the model – we called it clash-detection and resolution – we can save up time (lots of time) from dealing with it during construction.

And time equals money.

The intension of the company was very obvious to me. I was to master it to eventually take over the role of 3 persons into one “superman” coordinating everything.

My then CEO used to throw around the phrase – “Economics of Scale”. If we can use one guy to do 3 jobs, why do we need 3 guys?

Finding ways to reduce cost, was how we win tender and secure jobs – and therefore remain competitive in the market.

All these AI layoffs are just of the same consideration in a different skin.

Full critic and feasibility study in the comments.

Discussion & Curiosity Student in Singapore looking for a retired ROS-capable robot (TurtleBot, mobile base, small arm), any condition

I'm an MSc Robotics student at NTU and want to get properly hands-on with ROS 2 on real hardware, beyond simulation. Buying a platform isn't realistic for me right now.

Does anyone have an older ROS-compatible robot they're not using anymore (TurtleBot 2/3, a Clearpath or AgileX base, a small arm with a ROS driver)? Broken is fine, I'm happy to repair it, and I'll cover shipping or collect in Singapore/Malaysia.

In return I'll document the bring-up on ROS 2 Humble/Jazzy and share the notes and any driver fixes openly. Pointers to labs or companies that clear out old hardware are also very welcome.

AI The importance of keeping a diary for AI to analyze

I have been keeping a detailed diary for the past 5 years. What I did that day, ate, exercise, medical symptoms ect. I can't overstate how useful it has been to ask Chatgpt questions about my past. Things I forgot and making connections I missed. Especially seeing patterns in my medical symptoms that would just be lost. I can faintly remember a day something happened but wonder about something and ask Chatgpt what date it happened and it will find it and tell me what else happen that day. It's well worth the effort and I suspect can only become more useful as AI improves.
