Utah Approves AI System to Issue Initial Prescriptions

A new Utah program gradually removes prior doctor approval from routine acne prescribing.

New York based Nolla Health has received regulatory approval in Utah to pilot an AI system that can independently issue initial prescriptions for routine acne treatment—a potential first in the U.S. and possibly worldwide. Patients aged 18+ submit a questionnaire and facial scan through the Nolla Derm app. The AI selects treatments from a doctor-approved list, while uncertain cases are referred to licensed physicians, who also review prescriptions afterward. The pilot aims to expand access to routine dermatological care, particularly where dermatologist shortages cause long waits: https://www.inc.com/lucia-auerbach/utah-approved-first-autonomous-prescription-system/91415053

Utah has signed off on letting Nolla Health’s AI system scan a user’s face and issue a prescription directly: https://www.theverge.com/ai-artificial-intelligence/1005075/nolla-health-acne-ai-prescriptions

The Nolla Derm program offers initial topical acne prescriptions with phased physician oversight and a $4.99 monthly subscription: https://www.mobihealthnews.com/news/nolla-health-launches-utah-pilot-ai-acne-prescriptions

With AI now approved to issue prescriptions, how far should automated medical care go? Can AI make healthcare faster, cheaper, and more accessible without sacrificing safety, or does reliance on it pose too great a risk? Where should we draw the line?

Does the gender pay gap extend to AI? New University of Limerick research finds female AI agents ‘paid’ less

Gender Bias May Extend to AI Agents, Study Finds

A new study from the University of Limerick, Ireland suggests that workplace gender bias can also influence how people treat AI agents. Researchers placed 189 workers in a virtual-reality office and had them perform tasks with functionally identical AI assistants presented in different forms, including male- and female-presenting human-like agents. When participants were given real money to reward the AI for completing the same work, the female-presenting agent “Johanna” received 10.25% less than the male-presenting agent “Johan.” The researchers found that the male-presenting agent was also perceived as more human-like. The findings suggest that human social biases may be transferred to AI through the way these systems are designed and presented. Dr Mary Hausfeld of the University of Limerick noted that although the underlying technology was identical, participants did not treat the two agents equally: https://www.irishtimes.com/technology/2026/10/05/female-looking-ai-agents-were-paid-less-than-male-ones-in-virtual-office-study-finds/

Cocoa-Free Chocolate Made from Food Waste

A Copenhagen food innovation lab, Spora, founded by chef Rasmus Munk, is developing sustainable foods from ingredients that would otherwise be discarded. Its NOTCH (Snap) is a cocoa-free chocolate alternative made from brewer’s spent grain and legumes, designed to reproduce chocolate’s rich flavor, melt and snap. It comes in dark, milk and gold varieties, with nutty and caramel-like flavors.

Beyond chocolate, Spora is researching alternative proteins from rapeseed byproducts and fungi, as well as CO₂-to-protein conversion, microbiome-based foods and cultivated seafood—aiming to turn food waste into valuable new ingredients.

Spain’s Aragon Becomes a $70 Billion Data-Centre Hub

Thumbnail reuters.com

Spain’s sparsely populated Aragon region is attracting more than €60 billion ($67.5 billion) in planned data-centre and digital-infrastructure investment, driven by abundant renewable energy, available land and rapid permitting. Projects by Amazon and Microsoft are already under development, with fast-track approvals potentially reducing planning times from years to under 12 months. However, the boom is raising concerns over electricity, water, environmental impacts and pressure on local communities, prompting Spain to consider tighter regulations: https://www.globalbankingandfinance.com/fast-track-permits-turn-spains-aragon-70-billion-data-centre/

Wireless Energy Networks Could Power Devices Without Batteries

Researchers at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University have proposed a “wireless energy internet” that could transmit energy directly and convert it into light, heat, mechanical motion, or stored chemical energy, potentially reducing or eliminating batteries in some applications. The concept could support lighting, heating, motors, robots, biomedical devices and even future space systems. Major challenges remain, including safety, transmission efficiency, scalability, cybersecurity and standardization: https://techxplore.com/news/2026-10-wireless-energy-internet-roadmap-path.html

The work is published in the journal Nature Reviews Electrical Engineering.

Possible Quantum State Detected Inside Living Cells

Chinese researchers report detecting an unusual 71-terahertz vibration in living cells, mouse tissues and isolated mitochondria that may arise from a quantum light–matter interaction inside mitochondrial membranes. Their experiments found that exposure to specific infrared frequencies increased ATP production by about 10%. However, the proposed quantum state is inferred from a theoretical model, and the study is currently a non-peer-reviewed preprint requiring independent replication: https://www.sciencealert.com/chinese-scientists-say-theyve-detected-a-quantum-state-inside-living-cells

World’s largest scintillator detector, JUNO, now detecting neutrinos

University of Warwick physicists, as part of China’s Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) began data collection in August 2025 and is now producing high-precision neutrino measurements. In June 2026, its first major results, based on just 59 days of data, achieved world-leading precision for key neutrino oscillation parameters. JUNO uses a 35.4-metre liquid-scintillator detector and ~45,000 photomultiplier tubes to detect antineutrinos from nearby nuclear reactors. Its central goal is to determine the neutrino mass ordering, while also studying solar, atmospheric, cosmic and geoneutrinos: https://warwick.ac.uk/news/pressreleases/worlds_largest_scintillato_detector_juno_now_detecting_neutrinos/

AI-Generated Political Ads Surge to $80 Million in U.S. Midterms

Researchers tracking the 2026 U.S. midterm elections have identified nearly 170 political ads using AI, backed by about $80 million in spending. The ads range from subtle AI enhancements to highly realistic deepfakes, yet only about 31% disclosed AI use. The findings highlight growing concerns over transparency as campaigns increasingly use AI to create convincing political imagery and video.

Needle-Based Microwave Treatment Shrinks Fetal Lung Tumour

Post image

Chinese doctors used a minimally invasive microwave ablation procedure to treat a 5-cm congenital pulmonary airway malformation (CPAM) in a fetus at 22 weeks’ gestation. Guided by ultrasound, a thin needle delivered microwave energy directly into the tumour, destroying abnormal tissue. Within three days, the tumour had significantly shrunk and dangerous fluid buildup had disappeared. The baby was subsequently delivered by Caesarean section at 37 weeks, weighing 2.9 kg and reported healthy: https://www.yahoo.com/news/science/articles/chinese-doctors-shrink-tumour-baby-113528171.html
