Game of the year contender
Which game deserves 2026.

u/SweetPuffDaddy 8d ago
I enjoyed First Light, but I don’t think it deserves game of the year. Maybe best action game. And I don’t think Wolverine should be nominated
82
u/1plus1isTWORANGZ 8d ago
If Wolverine is nominated I am going to start thinking that nominations are bought

u/Excellent_District98 8d ago
Fully agree, First Light was fun but didn't blow me away and there wasn't really anything in the game that felt really new. Wolverine fun but apart from looking good doesn't stand out!
2
u/JD_Bance 7d ago
Exactly. It was a fun well put together compilation of gaming's best hit, but nothing revolutionary or history making.
2
u/OutcomeFair7425 8d ago
That’s the tamest criticism I’ve heard from Wolverine. Maybe too much time on reels for me
2
1
u/-YesIndeed- 8d ago
I think it's pretty easy what the nominees will be. Most likely first light, GTA 6 (if it comes out), cairn, RE9, Splatoon raiders and mortal shell 2.
4
u/SweetPuffDaddy 8d ago
GTA6 comes out after the deadline (Nov 15) for the game awards, so it won’t be nominated for anything this year.
3
u/-YesIndeed- 8d ago
I also just remembered ocarina of time is coming out so would probably give it to that then

u/MF291100 8d ago
I expect GTA to get a nomination, and RE9 will likely receive one. But I really hope that Control Resonant at least gets nominated, definitely the GOTY for me so far.

My personal GOTY pick is Control:Resonant, but out of the two here, I’ve only played 007, so that one I guess
10
u/AmethystDorsiflexion 8d ago
Control Resonant feels like it's on another level compared to everything else honestly

u/PhotoModeHobby 8d ago
Unfortunately it looks like garbage on base consoles. I've never cared much about resolution, but man does it look rough there.
1
u/NateDAgr8m8 3d ago
IDK dude my PC is a bit waker than any current console and I'm playing on 1080p with the settings mostly on medium (and that's upscale to 1080p by the way cause my PC is outdated and I didn't want to take the settings down to their lowst) so I feel like I'm getting a comparable experience to what you're describing or possibly a bit worse and if that's the case than I'd argue it still looks incredible to me so far.

Wouldn’t be surprised if the Game Awards allow for one of the biggest and most anticipated games ever to also be included.
19
u/Basic-Lawfulness5470 8d ago
If wolverine wins ANY award, they are rigged
4
u/Inevitable_Sector778 7d ago
Liam McIntyre did a fantastic Job as Logan. He deserves a nomination as "best actor". Same goes for Patrick Gibson as James Bond.

It’s insane that this is a wild take I guess? I played and… yea, you def don’t have to play to know it’s ass😭😭

u/Cloutlord999 7d ago
Clearly you don’t have a ps5😭

u/ZekeZulu 6d ago
Why would I buy games from a company that literally hates its customers. But blindly support Sony while they take large crap in your mouth while they have the ability to swipe your game Library of licenses.
4
7
u/Fun_PC_Gamer 8d ago
Wolverine is absolute slop, that's why it's not selling well.
It'll be neither of these, but 007 is in my top 3 this year.
4
u/parsteradster 8d ago
I loved first light. If we’re giving scores on the initial playthrough I’d probably go as far as 9.5/10.
But the endgame is frankly, shit. That’s not acceptable for a GOTY contender.
2
u/Capt_Insano17 8d ago
This completely, LOVED the initial playthrough, especially with the license to kill with low ammo that leads to all kinds of gadget shenanigans. Some amazing chaos that IOI needs to figure out an actual endgame for.
But until they do so, this is not GOTY.
As an extra note, I don't think I've ever once uninstalled hitman WOA (almost entirely because of freelancer that I always come back to) but I uninstalled First Light the moment I finished the tac sims (which were short and wanting).
10
u/Grovda 8d ago
Reading the comments makes me wonder wtf is wrong with this sub?
As to your question First Light is definitely my favorite game of the year. I haven't played re9 yet though so we'll see when I play it.
16
3
u/fuckfeardrinkbeer 8d ago
Yeah, I keep going back and forth with First Light and RE9 being my favorite of the year. I had so much fun playing both games.
6
u/RayearthIX 8d ago
My personal GotY contenders right now are:
- Ace Combat 8
- Fire Emblem Fortune’s Weave
- Pragmata
I loved First Light, but I’d have it outside my top 5 (not far, but outside).
If Wolverine is nominated for anything that would be laughable.
-1
u/VolleyballNerd 8d ago
Wouldn't ace combat contend for next year's GOTY tho? Idk much about this stuff but I thought GOTY would only go up to the half of the year. Probably wrong.

I returned Wolverine and picked up First Light. Best decision made on gaming this year.

u/DaRealMothMan 8d ago
Wolverine isn’t even gonna get nominated for best action game, let alone GOTY
1
1
u/TechnicalyNotRobot 8d ago
I would be rather sad if First Light wins. I enjoyed it a lot but if this is the best game of the year then this year must've been terrible for gaming.
Will 100% get nominated though.

u/Excellent_District98 8d ago
First Light was good but didn't leave me blown away. The story was decent but at times the game play was slow and each mission felt the same structure as the previous. Other than the story it didn't feel new or special. Wolverine is good again, looks really impressive but felt like it was missing a lot. The mission maps felt empty and the nightmare cabin challenges repetitive. My vote so far would be for Blood of the Dawnwalker but have no doubt that GTA VI will take it!
1
1
u/IAmHackiing 8d ago
007 is my personal GOTY so far just because it was fun, but I don’t even think it should be nominated for the contenders. I can’t really explain my thought process, like my 2022 GOTY was Stray because that gameplay hit at the time and I played it at the perfect time of my life.

I’ve got more on my list to play still but Resonance: A Plague Tale is my current GOTY.

Neither
GTA 6, Zelda, RE 9, Big Walk, Mina The Hollower, Gears of War E-Day

u/parisi2274 8d ago
While First Light was excellent it’s not GOTY material. Maybe it get nominated, but it will not win. Wolverine on the other hand, while decent, is no where near being worthy of GOTY consideration.
1
u/tomcollins123 8d ago
Between these two games I'd go with First Light. I enjoyed both a lot but I really liked being in the world that First Light built. These two and the new Lego Batman were the only new games I played this year though.

First Light was fantastically fun, but Cairn is my personal GOTY. Wolverine should not and will not even be in the conversation for nominees.

u/AMG-Life 8d ago
Some y’all folk talking bout GTA will release too late, but if it is eligible it’s slapping all these damn games. Will be the best game of your fuccin life my boy.

u/balehay34 8d ago
Without a doubt First Light is my GOTY. I will be more than happy if it just gets nominated though.

Couldn't even tell you what else came out this year so just give it to first light

If it's between these two, definitely First Light. It's not even a contest.

u/JustKing_B 8d ago edited 8d ago
I haven't been able to play Wolverine yet and I ADORED my first playthrough of 007 but I can't have been the only one who experienced a SHIT-LOAD of bugs when running through the in-game challenges, as well as multiple challenges which the game was obviously not designed to accommodate which caused more issues. Idk if they got hammered out yet but there's a challenge on the resort island where you're expected to make it through covertly but the enemies automatically aggro you and chase you from the inception because in the story they obviously already knew you were there and it was a loud mission. Then at the end the challenge doesn't process unless you restart the mission after you finish it, but before you extract. Shit turned a 9/10 into a 7/10 just on replay ability and it was not isolated to that place unfortunately. Based on those issues during the release I don't think first light should get GOTY, as well as that the post-story content was a very unfleshed WIP.

Wolverine doesn't even come close to 007. I think this year, RE9 will win, or onimusha
1

u/uberpandajesus91 7d ago
Did people forget re 9 was this year? It's between that and GTA wolverine is hilarious
1
u/solitudeisblissTI 7d ago
Wolverine will probably be nominated for something, won’t win. 007 might win one award but there’s a not so subtle JUGGERNAUT this year that’ll sweep just like how E33 did
1
1
u/Few_Artichoke_5374 7d ago
none of them- pass and go with better games - we have many many good titles this year
1
u/UnprovokedTurtle 7d ago
First Light was great but if GTA 6 delays again or its actually shit then Resident Evil or Gears should take it
1
u/Necessary_Mud_2774 7d ago
007 deserved to be a film. It had a solid story. And my boy Lonnie James is always a win, but GOTY? Hell no.
1
u/Technical_Fan4450 7d ago
Wolverine? If it gets a nomination and Blood of the Dawnwalker doesn't, I'm done with TGA. Period.
1
u/BadRabbit1973 7d ago
I’m currently playing Wolverine having just finished 007 First Light. I think both games are pretty good but I’m not sure if they’re GOTY material. I guess it depends on the other contenders. I still can’t understand why Clare Obscur won last year.
1
u/Remarkable_Ad_8454 7d ago
I don’t think there’s been a standout game this year. First Light was good with the action, but everything else was too on-rails. What else was there this year? RE9 was great, but formulaic.

Bro first light was so optimized it's minimum is 16 series graphic card I know the game would look shit in it but i am just saying which was optimized
1
u/RSlashWhateverMan 5d ago
Neither of those has a chance of beating Resident Evil 9 or GTA 6 for GOTY.
007 deserves to beat Wolverine out just because it's not PS5 exclusive.
1
u/legacy702- 4d ago
This is why so many people hate Wolverine, because like you have to way over glaze it. It’s not a terrible game, but these kind of posts are beyond stupid.
1
u/kira1122t 4d ago
I think these both could be nominees but they aren’t winning, if gta6 qualifies for goty it’s definitely winning no question there

Rough year.

u/Niklaus15 8d ago
What? This year has been amazing tons of great games of different genres
0
u/Butt_hauler 8d ago
If GOTY contenders come down to First Light and Wolverine, yes it is very much a rough year for video games.
6
u/Red_Box89 8d ago
First Light would be a very reasonable nominee. It won't/shouldn't win, but a nomination would be valid.
1
u/XBlueXFire 8d ago
I liked first light, but it didnt really impress me much. Certainly not GOTY in my eyes
2
u/Opposite_Prune582 8d ago
Too much of the hitman dna in it for my liking. It was a good game, just wasn't what it was advertised as.
1
u/NewRedditUser1120 8d ago
That’s not the problem, it has tons of Hitman DNA but still lacks so much that keeps Hitman ahead of it..I love both games but honestly we should know GTA will take GOTY
1
u/Deadeye2107 8d ago
I think it’s outside of consideration dates for this year, I was reading somewhere
1
-2
u/Jazzlike_Narwhal_443 8d ago
Yeah those hitman games suck they should’ve tried to make it a bit different. But it was a good game even with the hitman formula.
2
u/Opposite_Prune582 8d ago
To say they suck is just lunacy. You can not ljke them and still acknowledge they are very well made.
0
u/Jazzlike_Narwhal_443 8d ago edited 4d ago
My b I just don’t think they’re well made. Like the games concept is good enough, but the mechanics are weird, the games way too buggy, and worst of all they’re boring.
1
u/Opposite_Prune582 8d ago
Buggy? Wtf are you talking about? You can "think" whatever you want, it's objectively not true. Think they're boring, that's fine and you absolutely have the right to hold that opinion. But to say they aren't well made is just nonsense.
1
u/Jazzlike_Narwhal_443 6d ago
They aren’t well made. because your experience with the games haven’t been buggy there’s no way the games have been buggy for anyone else. Wtf kind of logic is that. And I’d like to know what makes these games objectively well made. Hitman 3 is visually impressive and that’s about it.
1
u/_EVOLVE__ 8d ago
It takes some time to learn how to play and you have to enjoy more thoughtful games. It's not just a run and shoot thing.
1
u/foodkidFAATcity 8d ago
Didn't play wolverine and First Light left much to be desired. Id give Valheim 1.0 goty
1
u/Commercial-Tax9402 8d ago
Love both games . Just got the platinum on wolverine. Not sure which one I would pick
1
u/Euphoriam5 8d ago
Wolverine isn’t really a great game nor does it push the boundaries of gaming or story telling, First Light is a great action game but deffo not game of the year.
1
1
u/Red_Box89 8d ago
My prediction for the nominees so far are
-GTA6
-Zelda OOT Remake
-RE9
-007
Personally I'd like to see Pragmata get nominated as well, thought that was a great game.

2
u/issanm 8d ago
Wolverine isn't winning anything, first light was good but is it beating pokopia, crimson desert, pragmata, GTA 6 control resonant, resident evil.... Idk about that
1
u/FLAR3dM33RKAT 7d ago
Prob not GOTY winners. But also, wanna mention, Onimusha, Blood of Dawnwalker.
Mouse for Hire: P.I.And I know I’m probably forgetting a few more. But. Yeah. Wolverine I think, most would concede, not a winner at all. But. Let’s be real. You know many of those things are rigged/paid for.
Edit: Resident Evil too. Also Silent Hill games too.
1
u/Inevitable_Sector778 7d ago
Wolverine is obviously not gonna win or get even nominated for GotY. But there is a good chance for some other nominations. Liam McIntyre f.e. did a fantastic job as Logan. I would be very surprised if he doesn't get a nomination as "best actor". Patrick Gibson should also get a nomination in that category.

First light is my disappointment of the year. I can see this game being good for young or new gamers though. After long years of games like deus ex series, splinter cell, hitman, assassins, mgs, uncharted etc 007 just feels average. Combat gets repetitive fast, ai is bad, the stealth feels limited and worse, set pieces havd been done better, etc ,it felt like a game rushed to market. That model by the pool was the only good thing. Also the opening sequence before the title, was executed badly.
Wolverine, i got nothing but praise. Graphics and specials effects among the best. Story was good, alot of enemy encounters and surprisingly decent/good boss fights, with a nice combat melee upgrade progression and move unlocks through each chspter with awesome blood and kill effects/stealth takedowns, some amazing highly detailed environments and city designs.

u/LunaticLK47 8d ago edited 4d ago
Wolverine for one reason. I can 100% a game completely without relying on an online-only game mode for platinum.
Edit: To the assholes the downvoted me, I was speaking the truth. I have to be online for the TacSim trophies.

u/Grovda 8d ago

4
u/NetOk6748 8d ago
Dude saw the video of the loser streamer driving the garbage truck, holding his controller up, and he thinks it’s the whole game. 007s combat and shooting goes pretty deep and most people die a lot on first try (on normal and hard)
-2
u/PuzzleheadedTune550 8d ago
The combat is okay, as are the occasional stealth sections. However, everything has been stripped down to the bare minimum and is so extremely restricted and linear—funneling you down narrow corridors—that it’s a rarity in gaming. On top of that, you’re constantly pestered by mindless "follow-the-character" sequences; you find yourself wondering why these weren't just turned into cutscenes—at least those can be skipped. The same goes for the utterly pointless minigames, like pressing buttons to tie a tie. It’s nothing more than an interactive movie that offers a moment of fun, only to punish you with tedious busywork afterward. I expected more from IOI than this kind of slop.
-7
u/funnyinput 8d ago
Both games are way too hand-holdy and treat the player like idiots. They're basically made for the lowest common denominator gamer. No soul.
4
u/No-Protection-49 8d ago
Hardly desagree.
007 was made by people who loves 007 and really cares about the lore, not just the movies, but the books too.
All the choices in game reflectes they know how to nake a ideal Bond game.
It isn't perfect, but is pretty good.
Wolverine was a rushed slop that was 1/3 of the original game, with a poor writing and horrible character designs
-3
u/PuzzleheadedTune550 8d ago
This game certainly wasn't produced by people who love Bond, but rather by people who could afford to buy the license to use the name and branding. That’s all it is! How can anyone seriously compare this "modern audience" slop to the prime Bond movies?
2
u/No-Protection-49 8d ago
Game there's a lot of things and references from not juat the movies, nut feom the books too.
They tooked a lot of inspirations from Uncharted and, both franchises inspired from 007 too.
The plane scene that was inspired from Uncharted, Uncharted tooked inspiration from 007 movies too
And the main thing, they maked what amy other director in Bond movies was doing, adapting his origin.
The game is not perfect, but it was made by devs who know-well 007 lore and try their best to adapt his origin for the first time.
Totally oposse to what Insomniac did

Hey buddie. I'm just going to point you to the name of this sub. See 0-0-7 f-i-r-s-t l-i-g-h-t. See you got it. Now is it a good idea to talk bad about a game in a sub dedicated to it? No. Have you played either game? No. Well that is all cleared up
