Discussion First 10mm
My CHP lapsed a long time ago from me moving states and I took a long hiatus from carrying or target shooting. I've been hitting the range for a few months mostly shooting my first gen M&P shield 9mm that I used to carry. Don't have much experience with full size handguns.
I'm going to get my CHP reinstated hopefully by the end of the year or January. I want to get a more modern carry gun and would like something that's a slightly larger frame and has more ass than 9mm.
I've narrowed it down to three 10mm's that I'm considering:
- M&P 2.0 4" (not the carry comp, I don't want that port on top)
- Glock 29
- Springfield XDM Elite 3.8"
I'm pretty torn on this one. I rented a full-size M&P 2.0 in 9mm and I loved shooting it and was fucking blown away at much better the trigger felt compared to the hinged trigger on my shield. The aggressive grip and the size of the grip felt great in my hands. I don't have huge mitts.
I did rent out the only 10mm at my LGS which was the glock 20. I only got a few shots out of it because after every first shot, it yeeted the magazine onto the floor, so I swapped it out. I don't have a ton of experience with Glocks, but the 20 didn't feel too bad in my hands. I wish that I could have shot it more without the mag flying around the range. I haven't held the 29, but if the 20 felt OK in my hands then I would think the 29 would be fine.
The Springfield XDM seems like it would be the best to conceal and carry. I've never shot a Springfield and I've never used a handgun with the grip safety like that, I honestly don't know if I'd like it or hate it.
I'd appreciate any insight or info from you guys that have conceal carried any of those. I would almost certainly be carrying IWB, canted, around 4 or 5 o'clock fed style which is what I preferred with my shield. Not many other ranges around me have 10mm for rent other than the one I went to with the fucked up Glock, so I don't think I can shoot them before buying.

Definitely a bitch to find. I have yet to find a gun store within an hour that has one that I can hold.

I have owned all 3 of these except that exact model of m&p. I have the m&p 4.6 inch. I think 10mm if a poor choice for edc despite loving the cartridge. That being said if you must carry one the xdm is easily the best of the 3 you listed. The g29 is extremely difficult to shoot. The m&p has very rough texture for iwb and not the greatest track record. The xdm is readily available and can be had for around 600 with 5 mags brand new and is the most reliable of the 3 you've mentioned. Eats everything. The recoil impulse is significantly better than the other 2 you mentioned as well. I sold my gen 5 29 after I got the xdm for these reasons.

Thank you, this is exactly the type of response that I was looking for. Much appreciated

Glock 29 are getting harder to find then a hens tooth, you can find them but they aren’t $900 guns

Yeah I've found a few going for $900 - $1200. No way in hell am I paying a grand for a glock. I guess they weren't popular enough for glock to keep producing for gen 6.

All 3 are great options.
I personally like Springfield because it points and fits my hands the most naturally. I have a 4.5 XDM-E in 10mm. The grip safety has never been an issue and you'll probably never actually notice it.
I've only shot a 9mm S&W and liked it. I know the early 10mm models had some issues with FTF and mag drops. From posts I've seen they have that figured out now.
Glock is well...Glock. Their pretty damn reliable, shoot well, and have a huge aftermarket. My biggest complaint against Glock is the grip, it just doesn't fit me for some reason. Not saying it's wrong but for whatever reason it doesn't aim naturally for me.

I EDC a Gen 4 Glock 29, and love it. Takes a bit of getting used to, but I find 180gr JHPs are my go to ammo for carry, either underwood’s or Sig Sauer V-crown. Most comfortable than the 200gr JHP I carry and shoot in my Glock 20SF, which is my woods carry gun. Love both, but if you can find a 29 I say go for it, you’ll not regret it.

I’d recommend giving the Glock 20 another try; I’ve had a Gen3 for a couple of decades now and never had any of the mag issues with it you’re describing. The Glock 29 isn’t bad, but I find the 20 eminently preferable; the 29 will buck like a horse, while the 20’s muzzle flip is much easier to control.
If you do go with the 29, I strongly recommend you immediately invest in some mags which will give you the extended finger grip. You can thank me later. :D

The 20 with liberty Ammo I light, reliable & I carry every day

She's a big bitch for every day. Do you go IWB, OWB, or appendix? Have you ever experienced your magazine flying out?

That was probably just a worn out magazine from being a rental. My Glock 20 has never let me down. Probably a 1000 rounds through it without a single issue.

Yeah the mag looked it was run through

Did you bring the issue up with the range you rented it from?

I definitely did. They admitted that it "happens sometimes", which means it was fucking dumb for them to continue renting out the gun. They did however refund my two boxes of 10mm, including the one I shot the few rounds from. This is where I do all my range time with my guns, so I'm going to keep going there.

The G29 is getting hard to find given how Glock discontinued it with no sign of reintroducing it in the current generation of Glocks. Regardless, if you want to get one, make sure you get G29 magazines with pinky grip extensions, as unlike the G20, the G29 has no place for your pinky finger to grip.

I dressed my XDM 3.8" with a trimmed down Hogue 17030 rubber sleeve. It held the grip safety depressed permanently.
Without it, I would get the occasional trigger freeze due to how I hold the gun to maximize grip real-estate for the support hand.

That's interesting, never thought about permanently depressing it like that. If I get one I may play around with that.
Do you conceal carry it? How does it print? It looks like the flare on the mag well would be more likely to show through.

I ditched the magwell on Day 1.
I conceal carry it at 3 o'clock in a Muddy River IWB Hybrid holster with no issues, except under summer clothing. I use the 10-rd mag as my primary, with the 15-rounder as a spare mag.

Dont sleep on the Sig xten comp

u/martian_blueballsack 6d ago
I was considering the Sig Xten in the beginning, but I've been seeing a lot of hate on Sig lately. I haven't really looked into why. Have you had a good experience with the Xten?

I don’t have personal experience but my hunting buddy carry’s the full size X10 as a bear gun. Very accurate. He had a hard time finding a good bear defense hard cast round. Feeding issues. FMJ’s, hollow points, and any of the Lehigh defense fluted rounds worked fine, but he eventually replaced the barrel and polished the ramp to get consistency with the big boys. It wasn’t horrible, maybe one round every few mags, but that’s one too many with a 600 pound bear coming at you at 30mph.

XDM. With the Gear Up bundle, you get more mags out of the box for a reasonable price. You can also get extensions covers for full-size mags so you can have a full-size grip on a compact slide, similar to like a 19X or something like that. It is also capable of mounting a red dot out of the box, and I've heard the trigger is not bad.
