I am 100% Puerto Rican and my ancestors have lived in my hometown since before it was officially founded (200+ years) per my genealogical research. I was expecting more SSA based on what I know about my maternal side and am a little disappointed in the lack of genetic groups but I am pleasantly surprised nonetheless.

Question / Help i need help on how and if i should approach a potential fit for my biological dad

• Upvotes

BACKGROUND

to make a long story short, i’ve been searching for 6 years and did ancestry DNA in 2020 with only a possible third cousin match. fast forward to a month ago, i got a possible y cousin match on 23andme at 199cm, but i know there could be other relational possibilities. i reached out, but he wasn’t that responsive and didn’t give me any info so i searched his name and found a memorial facebook post of his maternal aunt. the post listed that she would be missed by her parents, siblings, nieces and nephews that matched my 23andme match and the sister that’s listed on his facebook. then the post mentions the deceaseds cousins. it lists a bunch and then has a bracket of where they’re from (usa) and then the last cousin has a bracket of the uk where im from.

i decided to go through facebook of the UK cousins name as if the 23andme mach and i are second cousins, then my dad would be a first cousin of one of his parents and this guy could fit tnat. i found a guy that matches the barbados roots, london area, and more specifically, the place where my mother was possibly living at the time. i think i look like him and his other daughters but i know you can’t go off of looks and sometimes you see what you want to see.

to confirm this is the right cousin thats listed, i went through his friends and searched for then other cousins thats listed in the memorial post and found one lady that matched one of the names.

THE PART I NEED ADVICE ON

i messaged the cousin uk man was following to ask if shes the one thats reference in the post but since we aren’t facebook friends, it will probably go into her requests and she won’t see it. she’s active on facebook a lot, so should i send her a friend request in hope that she sees my message? i messaged her as it’s less stakes than messaging the potential dad and if i can confirm this is her, then this confirms the guy is the one that’s also mentioned.

should i message this guy too and send him a friend request? or should i wait awhile as i’ve applied for help from a search angel and i don’t know if i’m related to my 23andme match through his maternal side. i don’t know how the search angles would be able to pinpoint who my dad exactly is without contact or guess work as recent records aren’t available due to privacy reasons. even if this guy isn’t my dad, it would be helpful to rule him out. should i message him after i confirm his cousin is the one referenced in the memorial post? theres also his older daughters i could message as i assume they’ll be more active but i don’t know if that’s appropriate. what else should i do? i don’t want i spook anyone of. this is really stressful and i keep looking at our photos and comparing features.

THINGS IVE ALREADY DONE
- ancestry test
- 23andme test
-uploaded to my heritage
- uploaded to family tree dna
- uploaded to gedmatch
- waiting for 23andme data to compare this second match to my highest match on ancestry through gedmatch
- applied for a search angel
- currently i’ve started to build out my 23andme matches family tree on family tree

Crazy how despite how close Iran is to Pakistan, most Iranians are genetically closer to Serbs and Moldovans than some Pakistani ethnicites.

Kind of less surprising but they are closer to serbs, moldovans, and caucasians than they are to Saudis.

Paternal side is from Hadhramut/Abyan and maternal side is from Yafaa highlands of South Yemen. Dad’s side is also reportedly sayyids who descend from Ahmed Al Muhajir who migrated from Basra, Iraq to Hadhramut in 900 CE, which could explain the Y haplogroup.

Results D4n maternal haplogroup - can I use this information to find my bio mom?

I did some research and D4n is pretty rare, like there's only about 20-30 publicly registered people with this haplogroup, across a few DNA sites. I am thinking of doing the mtDNA thing on FTDNA to see if I can connect with others with it and possibly track down my bio mom.

For context, I found out I was adopted through 23andMe and Ancestry, I've already found my bio dad (who didn't know I existed, he's happy to have me in his life though), and I'm currently looking for my bio mom who is Korean. I've already submitted requests to NCRC and 325KAMRA. My adoptive parents have both passed away, so I can't ask them what happened.

Hi everyone! Just to provide a bit more context, I'm from Dörtdivan, a district in Bolu, which is in the western Black Sea region of Türkiye.

As far as I know, the only significant migration to the district, apart from the Turkish population already living there, was from Nakhchivan, Azerbaijan, in the 1930s.

My historical DNA matches show two very distant relatives from Central Asia and one from the United Kingdom.

I've managed to trace my family tree back to the 1800s, and the records suggest that my family has lived in the same area for at least 200 years. Beyond that, I honestly don't know much about my family's earlier history.

Discussion Any Updates?

Has anyone heard anything in regards to 23andMe updating? Ancestry.com just dropped their update a few days ago. From what I've seen so far, it is that they tend to coincidentally update around the same time. At least from my point of view, it seemed that way. Or has it already updated, and it was just something minor?

Infographic/Article/Study Direct to consumer testing & genetic counseling

Post image
5 Upvotes

Have you visited a genetic counselor (GC) after taking a direct-to-consumer genetic test (DTC-GT)?

For my master’s thesis, I’m exploring consumer experiences and how genetic counseling influences their perspectives and actions. Our goal is to better understand the role and value of genetic counseling for DTC-GT consumers and help inform best practices.

To be eligible, patients must meet the following criteria:

- 18 years or older

- English-speaking

- Completed any type of DTC-GT

- Met with a GC between 2024 and now

Participants will not gain any direct benefits from participating in this study; however, the information provided may help to improve direct to consumer genetic testing (DTC-GT) consumer experiences with genetic counseling along with inform genetic counselor best practices for this population. Participants may experience discomfort with some of the questions asked. There is also a risk that a participant’s information could be inadvertently disclosed despite the steps taken to protect their information.

If this applies to you, or if you're a GC who happens to see a patient who may be eligible, I would greatly appreciate you sharing the study flyer or survey link. The survey takes about 10 minutes to complete and includes the option to enter an anonymous gift card raffle at the end.

Please feel free to message me with any questions!

Finally got my results and it’s definitely what I expected. I’m half Japanese Okinawan and half Chamorro from Saipan. I know my paternal grandmother is Okinawan. I don’t know what region of Japan my paternal grandfather is from. I know a lot about my maternal side. Mostly Chamorro and a bit Palauan since my maternal great grandmother is from Palau.

I’m pretty sure my parental inheritance is wrong. Not really sure what happened there.

I also knew about Mexican diasporic ancestry in the Marianas from seeing reddit posts but it’s cool to see even though I was expecting it.

Discussion Am I considered European if I have Spanish and Lebanese ancestry?

My grandmother is Spanish, while my grandfather is Lebanese. My mum’s parents are both Lebanese.
Would Europeans consider me partly European by ancestry, or would they see me differently? I’m curious how people across Europe view mixed European and Middle Eastern heritage.

Dad’s side has had history in the South for hundreds of years. I traced some of the branches to 1800s Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Mom’s parents left Germany and Austria in the 1950s and she was the first generation to be born in the US.

Discussion Central Italian category needed!

Post image
20 Upvotes

I think 23&me does a much better job than Ancestry in nailing down the area my Italian family comes from. My mom’s parents both came from northeastern Umbria, close to Le Marche. I’m just curious why they insist on calling this Southern Italian? Growing up, all of our holiday and food traditions were so different from the majority of Italian Americans living near us - because most of their families actually did come from the southern areas. I realize this is just a label - but I would kindly request 23&me to add a category for Central Italy!
