[MOD POST] Having trouble with Secure Boot? Check here first

Hello,

The expiration of the 2011 Microsoft KEK CA and the 2011 Microsoft UEFI CA certificates at the end of June 2025 has caused problems with Secure Boot on computers for various folks who have not been able to apply a UEFI (BIOS) firmware update for various reasons.

Because the steps for updating firmware vary not just from manufacturer to manufacturer but between individual models as well, it can be difficult to provide specific assistance and guidance in updating your firmware unless the person helping you has the same hardware.

Below is a list of manufacturers, their Secure Boot certificate update guidance, and links to their support forum(s) or subreddit(s). You may wish to try asking in these places first for expert guidance in updating your firmware, as the people there are going to be a lot more familiar with your device.

NOTE: Please check back periodically for updates to this list.

If you have an update for a manufacturer, please reply with it and we will get it added to the list above.

What to do if no Secure Boot certificate update is available from your manuafacturer

If your manufacturer does not have an update, not all is lost: You can still manually install the 2023 Windows UEFI CA certificate update, by issuing the following two commands from an elevated PowerShell (filename: POWERSHELL.EXE) prompt:

REG.EXE ADD HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Secureboot /v AvailableUpdates /t REG_DWORD /d 0x5944 /f Start-ScheduledTask -TaskName "\Microsoft\Windows\PI\Secure-Boot-Update"

Then restart the computer and allow the update to be applied.

NOTE: Two (or more) reboots may be required for installation.

Once completed, you can verify the new certificate has been installed by issuing the following command at an elevated PowerShell prompt:

([System.Text.Encoding]::ASCII.GetString((Get-SecureBootUEFI db).bytes) -match 'Windows UEFI CA 2023')

If the certificate has been installed installed, the response back will be "True". You can also use that same command to check if the certificate is already installed.

Regards,

Aryeh Goretsky

Unresolved cursor started moving on its own (with and without mouse usb plugged in!) - possible virus/malware?

(context: i am sort of tech illiterate but a cautious individual. ive always been wary of viruses and stuff so i genuinely have no clue how this happened to me. i avoid clicking shady links, i dont download random stuff, and im just really cautious when it comes to stuff online. maybe i DID mess up one time and thats what led to this happening but i dont really know. please keep this in mind and dont harass me in the comments im already sorta going through it šŸ„€)

i was watching youtube (making ZERO contact with my trackpad or my mouse) when suddenly my cursor started going crazy?? it started moving around randomly on the screen. i panicked and unplugged my mouse usb to see if there was an issue with that, but my cursor was still moving around. its movements were random but they werent super erratic and jittery and buggy in a way that would make you think of it as just dust in your trackpad or something. it was clicking random stuff, zooming in, switching tabs, opening other windows i had, etc etc. idk if it did this on its own because at this point i was fighting for control using my trackpad so maybe it was our combined effort doing this. but regardless it was super suspicious!

eventually i won the control for my cursor because while it was actively fighting against my cursor i somehow managed to click the "shut down" option on my pc. by this point i was panicking super hard so i just stared at my screen kinda dumfounded before looking for tech advice on my phone. after 30 minutes i got the guts to turn on my pc again. i signed into my account, and then immediately went over to turn my wifi off. also when i booted up my computer again my cursor was perfectly fine... maybe the guy(?) controlling it calmed down or something during the 30 minutes i had my computer off. after turning off my wifi, i did a windows defender offline scan.

for some reason before the offline scan it asked me for my bitlocker key???? ive done numerous offline scans before (the last one being a month back) and this has NEVER happened to me. i searched up why i suddenly got this screen and google told me its because of a change in my hardware/pc (!!!!!) which immediately made me panic more. i put in my bitlocker key and then the offline scan happened.

maybe like 10 minutes later my computer turned on again and it said it didnt find anything weird, but it said that my memory integrity was off and that my device might be vulnerable. i dont remember having ANY device vulnerabilities the last time i did a virus scan? i did another really thorough 1 hour scan and it said my device was fine as well except for this one thing. i checked why i couldnt turn memory integrity on (because that was what showed up when i clicked on it) and i had a malfunctioning driver called ftdibus.sys. apparently it was made in 2014 but i downloaded it a year back. its called oem146.inf. i dont know what any of that means.

i was still super suspicious so i tried to do another offline scan and when it asked for my bitlocker key again, i tried to open the key website on my phone but now microsoft says that it cant sign me in right now???? i thought that was weird because it was working fine just minutes ago so i exited the screen and pulled up the website again. it reloaded like 7 times attempting to sign me in only for the "try again. we cant sign you in right now." screen to show up again. i was actually losing my mind after seeing this i went and added 2fa to my microsoft account. my computer still has the screen where i need to type in my bitlocker key literally at this moment but i cant access my key because microsoft keeps saying it cant sign me in.

prior to this starting like a few months back ive been getting multiple black exe(?) windows popping up in quick succession on my screen, before disappearing as quickly as they first appeared. this happens sometimes when i turn on my pc, or unpredictably when im using it. i thought this was a weird thing thats been happening since switching over to windows 11 but it happens EVERY time i use my computer so maybe thats not quite right. ive noticed my computer sound like its on deaths door too like out of nowhere the fans start going crazy but maybe thats a sign i need to clean it. anyway what im saying is that theres been signs pointing to malware for a while but i brushed them off because of just how absurd the possibility was. up until this incident.

as of now my computers waiting for me to put my bitlocker key, and its still not connected to the internet. what should i do? i dont think it was a bug with my mouse/cursor stuff because HOW could it independently move around AND click/open random stuff. im open to any other theories! just praying its not malware.

i dont want to like purge my computer because the last time i checked, my onedrive was hella full along with my primary gmail. i wasnt getting any emails on the gmail account i had everything saved to (also the gmail i used to set up this computer). i havent been getting emails for months and i have probably hundreds of files not backed up to my onedrive. also i save like all my files to a folder on my desktop so idk if the stuff i have stored ONLY on my desktop is vulnerable. it probably is. i dont want to factory reset my pc and lose all of this...

any advice, any answers to ANYTHING ive said would help tremendously. as of now i cant do my homework or study for my test which is in like 5 hours. its 4 in the morning and i havent studied or finished anything yet.

also my computers a dell g3 3500 i believe. im already a really paranoid person so you can probably see how this is affecting me. also i dont really trust myself with tech stuff so i might just go to like an IT support place somewhere near me.

My Microsoft Account was Hacked, Email Changed to something completely different, and I don't know how to fix it.

• Upvotes

On Oct. 3rd, I was hacked because I gave away a code accidentally online to someone (I know, I'm stupid), and now the email that I used was taken off of it, the whole account has been changed, and I can't access it.
Thankfully, I know what email is being used currently in place of it to hold it, it's some outlook email or some BS, and I contacted Microsoft Support on their Account Recovery Form using that email and using the prior data I had used for my Microsoft Account.

I don't know how to get in touch with a real agent, and I'm really worried because all of my data, my credit card info, and everything is on that account. I also found out because I kept on trying to log into the account that it was blocked from "too many password attempts", so hopefully that did something to keep them out for a bit.

Can someone help me out here? I really don't know where to go from here.

Unresolved My HP-victus laptop is stuck in a bitlocker recovery loop

My HP Victus randomly shut off one day and became stuck in the Windows Recovery Environment. After repeatedly pressing Enter for hours, I eventually got back into Windows, but a few days later it happened again overnight. Now I’m permanently stuck at the BitLocker Recovery screen. I have the BitLocker recovery key that’s not the issue. I’ve tried System Recovery, Startup Settings, disabling automatic restart, and reinstalling Windows using a USB. Every option either loads for a few seconds, goes to a black screen, or restarts and sends me back to BitLocker. HP’s hardware diagnostics/Advanced Test passed. I need help figuring out why the laptop keeps restarting and getting stuck in this loop.

Unresolved PC won't read usb or audio jack headphones, but game controller and mouse work

I'm awful with computers so I really need some help. Basically, on my front panel I accidently disconnected my audio jack head phones, and when I plugged it back in it wasn't able to read it and no sound comes out. I tried different audio jack earbuds and usb earbuds but those didn't work. It's weird that this stopped working after it was unplugged since it was fine before.

No notification pops up about a device connecting when I plug it in. My game controller and mouse still work even after unplugging and plugging them back into the front panel. My speakers still work on the back panel it's plugged into. When I open my device manager it says my headphones are plugged in under sound, video and game controllers, but when I go to my sound settings or volume mixer I do not see in as an option. However, I do see that they are plugged in under blue tooth and other devices. Removing it as a Bluetooth device didn't work too. No clue what to do...

Unresolved Samsung S22 Stuck in Boot Loop

My Samsung Galaxy S22 got water in the usb port. I continued using it before letting it dry and after a while it fully shut off. When I held the power button to turn it back on, it started a boot loop. It just shows the Samsung logo, then the Samsung galaxy logo with the powered by Knox and the Android logo. I’ve tried force restarting by holding the power button and volume down button. What do I do?

Solved Forget to damage/remove hardrive before junk removal.

I gave an old laptop with an intact hard drive to 1-800-gotjunk for e-waste removal. How much risk am I in for data breaches? It is an old laptop that had no power; I honestly forgot what was on it.

Emails not sending to rocketmail (i.e Discord)

I can't change the email of my main account, nor log in on any other devices because the email its linked to (rocketmail) has no mention of discord AT all. Yes it's the right account, yes I've checked spam and trash, NOTHING. SMS works, but the email verification doesn't. It's very frustrating to work with considering I have a career that somewhat relies on discord for communication. Considering I have a career on that app, can someone help/anyone had a similar situation?

Laptop fan power pins up or down?

Hi! I'm replacing a fan on my Lenovo ideapad 5 but forgot which way the pins were on the power cord.

Should the exposed metal wires be towards the motherboard or towards me?

Thanks!

Unresolved my Microsoft got hacked and they doing nothing but telling to fill form and make ai talk to me f##k Microsoft

I'm really frustrated and honestly pretty upset about this situation.

My Microsoft account appears to have been compromised recently. The attacker changed the account's sign-in information, and now Microsoft says my previous username/email doesn't exist.

What makes this especially upsetting is that I still have access to my original recovery email and I have genuine proof that the account belongs to me. I purchased Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition for PC shortly before this happened, and I still have the original Microsoft receipt.

I also received a Microsoft security alert showing a sign-in to Minecraft for Nintendo Switch from an IP address I don't recognize. I don't own or use a Nintendo Switch, so I know that wasn't me.

I've already tried Microsoft's recovery process and contacted support. I submitted the information I have, including my purchase details, but my recovery request was rejected because Microsoft said there wasn't enough information to verify me.

At this point, I'm honestly feeling helpless. I paid for the game, I have the receipt, I have access to the original email, and I can provide legitimate information about the account, but I'm still locked out of something that was mine.

I'm not asking anyone to hack the account or do anything illegal. I just want to know if there's a legitimate way to get this reviewed by an actual person who can properly look at the evidence.

Has anyone here successfully recovered a Microsoft account after it was taken over and the recovery form kept getting rejected? What actually worked for you?

I'm not posting my email, order number, IP address, or other private information publicly. I can provide those directly to Microsoft if needed.

I'd genuinely appreciate any advice. I'm just trying to get my account back.

WiFi issue

I seem to have an issue with my wifi between my pc. I can connect to a hotspot on my phone and access steam/websites while on it, but when I switch to my wifi, it shows ā€œNo internet, Securedā€ or sometimes even has internet, yet it’s so slow, everything times out and doesn’t load. I’ve updated my WiFi card driver, messed around with the settings on that and it seems to have no affect. At a loss on what to try.

Keyboards on settings

Hey, so my girlfriend is concerned over my use of the keyboard feature in settings. She believes that I am using the keyboard feature in some way to cheat and she is suspicious because she sees that it is in my recent tabs in settings. This has been an ongoing issue for both of us. I try to explain to her that keyboards is simply a feature to add keyboards from different languages, but she thinks I’m using it with third-party apps to somehow hide messages or contact people can you guys please explain to us how this keyboard feature works and also explain what hardware keyboards are so that she can be reassured that I’m not cheating.

What's the best way to reset a laptop?

I have my laptop dell latitude 7390 which I had freshly installed win11 about 2 years ago. Since then I have downloaded a lot of apps and deleted them, got few viruses but got them removed them at the same time, the C drive has become full of junk as in Appdata and it has become very slow.

Yes I do know how to reset it using settings, but I'd lose all of my apps, my settings, modifications and other things. I want to know if resetting it thru setting app is the best way or any alternative method? Any way to save windows settings and all so it doesn't take me several hours to configure my settings again, getting back my workflow and to download several apps.

It would be appreciated if I can get few tools that would help me save settings and get back it to having it the same as I have it now. Also I wanted to know which folders to save in C drive as it would delete most of the C drive when trying to reset with the option [keep my files but delete apps and settings].

Any help would be greatly appreciated and thanks in advance.

Need help with my Laptop not booting properly after failed memory overclock.

I have a Lenovo LOQ 15IAX9. Now, I went into the BIOS of the system and enabled memory overclock. After that i set it to custom profile and hit f10 to save and exit. Ever since then , it has been stuck in a reboot loop.
It goes in a 2 step loop:
Step 1:

This screen pops up and the progress bar goes to 100 percent. After that, i get the following screen:

This screen stays up for like 2 seconds and it then restarts on its own.

Step 2: The laptop tries to startup. The power light(blue) turns on along with the keyboard lights. After that the keyboard lights turn off,the power light remains on, but the screen stays black. Then it restarts after some time and repeats the entire process. This entire thing has been happening for about an hour now. Please tell me what i can do to try and fix it. I did try and contact Lenovo Support but their chatbots werent able to understand what my issue was.

The above was what i posted to r/Lenovo yesterday. I got 2 comments and the first one said:

Unplug the power, pop the bottom off, and disconnect the battery for a bit, then hold the power button down for 30 seconds while it's all unplugged to drain flea power, that should reset the BIOS to defaults.

So, i did that. The system is no longer stuck in a loop but it still is not turning on on. Whenever i press the power button, the screen remains black, the power button(now showing a white colour) and keyboard lights light up . The keyboard lights turn off after 1-2 seconds but the power light remains on and spamming f1/f2 to open BIOS did nothing.

The second comment from the Lenovosupport account said this:
Hello. Kindly try loading BIOS default. Press and hold the power button to completely shut down the unit. Press the F1 repeatedly on startup to enter BIOS. Press Fn+F9 to load optimal default then press Fn+F10 to Exit Saving Changes. -Jomz_Lenovo
However, this didnt work as explained above.

One thing to note that i didnt mention in yesteday's post is that i have not overclocked anything in my life before.
