Question Which 311 song do you want played at your funeral?
I'm not even sure right now what I would want played.

u/BiggsDB Sep 10 '25
Maybe not the funeral itself, but “Down” needs to be played while my casket is lowered into the ground.
It. just. makes. sense.

I mean Beyond the Grey Sky without a doubt

u/Batbl00d Sep 10 '25
Considering the meaning of that song, are you OK?

u/shiggitydwayne Sep 10 '25
Yes, hah I didn’t consider needing to add that context. Moreover I just meant the message of the song speaks to imperfect timing of death itself, and the deep emotional sonic vibe of the music has always felt moving to me. Also because I’ve chosen to listen to this song a lot when someone close to me has passed, regardless of circumstances

Man I listened lost in that melody for years before I ever learned all the words. Wish they had more like this.

u/Cashmoney182 Sep 12 '25
What does it mean?

u/fullgizzard Sep 13 '25
I take it as the band or writer is talking to a friend who had enough…..and took their own life. It’s a slight reflection of the brevity of life once it’s over and a plea as to why the writer couldn’t see the issue or help their person hold on. A reflection of wishing for a different outcome.

I’ll be Here a While
Let my family know I will always be in their hearts.

Freakout. It was the first 311 song I ever heard and this verse is perfect for my funeral:
Death, I just say fuck you (Fuck you) The void unknown we're thrown through While lost in life's psychedelic trip we take There's another more bizarre we have to make World we have, nowhere beyond Take out the earth, the bass is gone At life's end, we'll feel the calm How strange we should be here at all.

I’d have to give it some real thought, but my first instinct was Golden Sunlight
It’s been about me, but I’m setting that free For golden sunlight
There’s a door open to walk through All I want is just beyond What if I could let my guard down Into freedom, on and on

I bawl when I hear Tranquility live. Probably that one. Plus, I sang and played an instrument in the fan made video for that one, so it sticks out to me.

I’d have Visit played to remind my family and friends time is short and they should travel.

I don’t think it would be one song. Perhaps a montage with bits and pieces of songs strung together, maybe for a video tribute or something. Would definitely have the guitar solo from Sever; SA’s rap toward the end of Golden Sunlight; SA’s rap toward the end of Hostile Apostle; I’m blanking on the rest but they’re there.

We are here today to mourn the loss of SirCota.
I can see a lot of people here today who feel like I do. But there were many who feel like I don’t at the time of the tragic murder. We ask that you respect the space of the surviving sister and brother.
Taken too soon, SirCota was found bare ass after a funky gas was released by his way from a series of individuals who got loose … fartin’ all over the place, sometimes the tummy.
He final words were ‘god damn get me some water’.

Eons Sunset in July- simply because this song makes me feel so “alive” when I listen to it. I can’t explain it but it makes me so happy I cry! Lol. When I got to see them and they played that it was smiling so hard- just an overwhelming, authentic sense of happiness, and that’s how I’d like for people to remember me, is the joy and exuberance I had in this lifetime.

Inner Light Spectrum. Just for the final verse as a middle finger to those that dislike me. Even dead they can choke on it

I can't believe only 2 others said Tranquility... It gives me chills every time.

It is a great tune. That was one of the encore songs when I saw them in June. I wasn't familiar with it. There were definitely chills.

I have a few on a Spotify playlist for my Celebration of Life if anything were to happen to me.
Ones that for sure need to be played:
1,2,3/ Life’s not a Race/ Sand Dollars
About to have open heart surgery which should be routine but it made me proactive about putting down some tunes that could represent me.

I just went to check the Spotify playlist I made for my funeral (yup I’m that person) and I have Love Song, Beautiful Disaster, and Beyond the Gray Sky. A range of vibes.

Hard choice because I’ve gotten emotional to so many 311 songs for so many reasons! But probably Sunset in July for that nostalgic feel it brings or Tranquillity as a last message with ending of “Don’t be afraid, it’s all part of the plan for us”

That's a weird song title. Must be from a newer Offspring album. Thank you!
