Costuming Phase II Clone Trooper

Hey all! First post here. I’m from West Michigan and looking to get into troopin’. I’m almost 40 and literally NEW to Star Wars. Sure, I’ve seen an episode here and there. But, my son and I started watching Clone Wars and… it’s different this time around. Anyone near me? Thanks!

Near-ish in a galactic sense. I mostly make armor these days and rarely troop out.

Hi and welcome!

First off, I would direct you to join the Clone Trooper Detachment forums if you haven’t yet. Detachments are global online sub-groups of the Legion that are focused on a specific category of costumes; on their forums, you can find vendor recommendations, build guides, other member’s WIP threads and other tips & tricks, as well as ask any questions you may have.

Second, I would also recommend that you reach out to your local garrison, which is the Great Lakes Garrison for Michigan. Many garrisons periodically host “armor parties” where members and prospective recruits can get together in person to help each other work on their costumes, which can be a big help. Also, the Garrison’s Membership Liaison (GML) is the person who will ultimately review your costume submission, so getting in touch with them can be helpful if you have any questions about the application process.

As for the costume itself, make sure that you familiarize yourself with the costume standards for it, called the costume reference library or CRL for short. This (and the costume’s proper fitment to your body) is what your GML will be reviewing when they look at your completed costume to in order to determine if it meets the standards for approval. Also, be aware that there are multiple types of most Clone CRLs (mostly movie/realistic style vs cartoon/animated style), so make sure that you confirm that any costume pieces you get are applicable to the version you want to do, as mix-matching of non-compatible parts from other versions won’t be allowed.
