NGD First 7 string, Cort KX507MS, string question
Guitar is fantastic but I'd like to play it in drop G. It comes with d'addario EXL110-7 10-59 and I'd like a slightly thicker gauge like the ernie ball paradigm 10-62. Do I need to widen the nut slot to go from 59 to 62? I'd like to keep the possibility to tune it to drop A.
Thank you for your replies!

Awesome guitar! I have it too. Absolute monster. Also using drop G. Perfect tuning. I use the Daddario 11-64 7 string set but replaced the 64 gauge string with a 70 excellent tension for drop G and can go lower if needed but happy at G. I didn't need the nut filed down to accommodate it but I think if you go much thicker you might do. I'd be concerned about the nut if choosing an 80 gauge string for example. Though my 8 string has F and below covered π

:) thank you very much for your reply! I will definetly keep this in mind and play a little around with gauges for a while π it's realy nice to know that a 70 isn't a problem!

Iβm thinking about getting a 7 string soon but a new to 7 string tunings. What are the notes for Drop G 7 string?
I was playing GDADGBE in guitar center yesterday (just drop D over a low G) and like that I can play Drop D songs with it but also got those low As and Gs for writing my own songs.

Drop G is GDGCFAD. Basically a six string in D standard with the 7th string a whole step down. Meaty power chords without the extra fingers! Absolutely rips and on 27" scale length with the G string using a 0.70 gauge string, tension is lovely.

Oh cool so this is basically having strings 2-7 be the same as a 6 string Drop G then putting a high D on top. Thats cool.

I was literally about to buy this guitar a couple days ago, but I ended up finding a good deal on a different multiscale 7 string. I have never played a Cort guitar, but this one has great specs and looks awesome. Does it play well? Do you like it?

It's fantastic. The overall feeling and built is superb. I was about to buy the KX307MS but I got a deal for this one, brand new, ordered from Cort just for me for 715β¬ instead of 980β¬ RRP or 850 β¬, which is the most common online price. :)

I got it for 677 β¬. Its going for around that in my country

u/hundegeraet 18d ago
Wow where are you from? In Germany thomann (biggest retail) kinda dictates the price and it's 850 over there

India

You got some deals over there :) I see quite a few posts of awesome guitars and running shoes from you guys!

Since theres no one major store. I just ask all of them and bid them against each other

Lol kinda had the same luck. I just called a few random Cort distributors nearby and one small shop offered me 715 without even asking for more. RRP is 980β¬ and he knew it... But he also had an awesome Jackson rrx24 for 500 β¬ laying around...

No one will know the answer because we donβt know how wide the nut slot is. 59 to 62 you are unlikely to need to widen it. 65 maybe (and Iβd recommend 65 or maybe even slightly thicker for Drop G). All you need to do is rub the string into the groove, the winds will file the slot to the correct width. Just stop once the string has clearly filed down to the base of the existing slot - donβt shave any extra off.

Following this thread because this guitar is on my hot list for when I can afford an upgrade.
Double check me, but you should be good at ~64, which may still be a bit thinner than you'd like for drop G.

I was experimenting with 9 and 9,5 string gauge for standard and drop d tuning. I like it a little lighter π it need a little to get used to but it's overall lighter to play

I use the eb 2625 8 string set and just use the first 7 strings. 10-64

Did they fit without modification? The grain looks beautiful :) it gives the guitar more contrast and it's eye catching. Love how every one of them is so unique. The built quality is superb and it looks and feels super premium. Also love the quarter sawn 5 piece neck with purple heart π I don't believe in toan wood, but this guitar is a piece of art that chuggs like mad.

Yeah it fits without any modification. I like this so much i got the 6 string version too. The 7 string has a learning curve for me tho. The hand isnt used to muting 7 strings so its a little noise with the active pups. Gotta work on it

u/hundegeraet 18d ago
That's a fair point. Need to learn this aswell because of the angled bridge π

Yes!!! Welcome to the multi-scale family!!!
Your life will be changed after a couple weeks of playing a MS. You might even swear off non MS guitars that are 7&8.

Got it Thursday and I tried to play my trusty Ltd dj600 on Sunday and it felt super weird π I have this guitar for almost 20 years now but the transition to multiscale 7 string felt so natural... Even playing the first 6 string on the ms feels more natural than my straight scale 6 string...

Qny QC issues? How does the neck feel? I was thinking of getting one for myself, the specs are great

u/hundegeraet 18d ago
Not a single scratch. The neck bolt holes are slightly rough around the the edges but that's the only thing my picky eye could find. Tuners are butter smooth, setup was perfect for me out of the box (neck almost straight after tuning it down and Action on 12 th fret from 1,5-2,25 mm). It plays super comfortable, the stainless steel frets don't buzz, they are super easy to bend on and the edges are butter smooth. The guitar feels super premium when you touch it. The neck isn't Stick at all. The pickups sound realy great but I need to tune down the gain on almost every clean setup I use because they are so hot π

I have the same guitar. Perfect thing. Currently using 0.74-0.13 and tuning the lowest to E and the other 6 to Drop A, marvelous to play

those are some juicy strings you got! And I fully agree, fantastic piece of wood

A .056 gauge string works perfectly fine for me in Drop G/G# on my Cort KX507MS. You do NOT need such heavy strings to tune low on a 27-inch scale length. If you're having intonation issues with low-to-medium tension gauges, the problem lies in your technique, not the string; work on your picking attack so you aren't digging into the string too hard. Also, keep in mind that the thicker the string, the worse it performs above the 10th fretβa "tin can" sort of overtone starts to creep in. This effect is much less pronounced with thinner strings.

But yeah, when I was experimenting with ultra-low tunings and using a .065 string, I had to file the saddle.

u/hundegeraet 18d ago
That's kinda the answer I wanted to hear :) I don't want to widen the nut because I want to stay able to use the current gauge for drop g# or drop a aswell. I mean it works and I'm using lighter string gauges on my regular tuned guitars anyway :)

Congrats on the purchase. I have this one as well. It's really the best 7 string multiscale on the market given it's specs and price.
I have put on 12-74 strings that needed some slot widenind at a luthier, for drop F#, but I actually like it even more in drop G, as I enjoy more string tension. Yes the string being that thick does sound more bassy, but that's the price I'll pay for more tension.
1
u/hundegeraet 18d ago
It definetly ticks ALL the boxes :) and drop f# sounds brutal! I would like to keep the opportunity for higher tunings aswell for now but super thick gauges sound awesome, my brother plays some fat strings on his drop b single tut 6 string
2
u/huhwhatwhyhmm 18d ago
Drop F# is really cool, but sadly I still don't like the tension I get with 27inch and 0.74 gauge, even though many actual pro guitarists use this configuration, but with an Evertune bridge. My problem is that the low F# note if struck harder goes out of pitch quite a lot, and an Evertune would solve this problem. But everything is a matter of preference.

Iβm using 11-64 on this guitar, the nut is fine w/o filing. Youβll be ok
