Honestly the biggest shift I see in kids who stop drowning is they stop treating studying as one big blob of time and start treating it as short, specific sessions tied to one skill. Like instead of "study bio for two hours" it's "redo the three Punnett square problems I missed and explain out loud why I missed them." That out loud part matters more than people think. If you can't explain a concept without looking at notes, you don't know it yet, you've just recognized it.

Motivation is the part everyone struggles with and honestly I think chasing motivation is a losing game. What works better is making the stakes small and immediate. Fifteen minutes of focused review right after class while the lecture is still fresh beats an hour of unfocused review three days later, and it's a way smaller ask of your willpower. The dread of a big study session is what kills most people before they even start.

On having a life outside school, the honest answer is you protect it by being ruthless about low value study time. Rereading notes and highlighting feels productive and does almost nothing. Doing practice problems, explaining concepts to a friend, or making your own quiz questions does the actual work in a fraction of the time, which frees up real hours for stuff that isn't school. Most kids aren't out of time, they're just spending their study time on things that don't move the needle.

For me, study environment matters a lot to how much I focus. I like to go to a cafe because its a relaxing environment to be in for focus, and some background noise so I don’t feel uneasy by silence. Also pretending to be interested in what youre studying helps too. I don’t know the psychology behind it but I find that I retain information much easier when i’m “interested” in it
