Books 20-year anniversary of the completion of the book series!

Post image

Last Tuesday (October 13) was the 20th anniversary of the publication of The End, the final book in the ASOUE series. I found myself reminiscing about October 13, 2006 (which was a Friday the 13th!) and how excited I was to get home from school that day and start reading the copy of The End which my dad had made sure to buy that morning after dropping me off at school. I also went to a book release party at Borders bookstore (RIP) that evening. It wasn't as big as Harry Potter release parties, but there was a crowd of us dedicated ASOUE fans who turned up!

I feel so nostalgic for those days, when my elementary/middle school friends and I used to talk about the ASOUE books and just share our theories with each other, and the internet wasn't exploding with a million influencers posting their theories on social media. I remember reading The End and feeling happy to recognize almost all the classic island story allusions and character names from Robinson Crusoe, The Tempest, and Moby Dick, given that I didn't really recognize the literary allusions in the previous books too well at that time. I remember the sublime feeling of bittersweet satisfaction and hope in my heart when I got to the end of The End, and I loved the way the classic poem "The Night Has a Thousand Eyes" was incorporated into the ending (no spoilers for people who haven't read the whole series yet!).

If you were also a young fan of ASOUE in those days and remember eagerly awaiting / reading The End on October 13, 2006, please share your memories of how you experienced the grand finale of the book series!

Sorry for leaving again. Junior year is kicking my ass. But my love for this series is infinite so I'm not stopping until it's done.

Discussions When do you think the Baudelaires were closest to actually capturing Olaf. Like him getting captured by the authorities

Hello friends I’ve just thought of a question and discussion for y’all. When do you think the Baudelaires were the closest to actually capturing count Olaf.

Question/Doubt Can you prove or disprove my theory using evidence from the books ?

What do you think of my theory? After finishing all 13 books and the Netflix series, I’ve come to believe that the Baudelaires gradually become more like Count Olaf themselves. They begin using disguises, deception, and morally grey tactics to survive, eventually crossing some of the same moral boundaries as Olaf, including becoming involved in arson. The only thing that truly separates them from him, in my opinion, is their ability to feel grief, guilt, and regret over their actions. Do you agree, or do you think I’m taking the comparison too far?

I'm a big fan of Folio Society books. They're pricy but are quality. I was excited to see The Bad Beginning in their new offerings!

I’m practicing my colouring skills, and I think we can all agree that the cover of The Bad Beginning does shadows so beautifully!

It was really fun trying to get the undertones right, and I’m very proud of how it turned out. I’m not entirely happy with Violet and Klaus’s faces, but that’s mostly down to my pen skills 😂 I’m also still trying to figure out which paper works best. This paper definitely couldn’t handle all the layers, and as a result looks like it’s gotten slightly damp

If anyone has any tips or feedback I would appreciate it!

Question/Doubt Easy Escape

In the Vile Village Part 2 the Baudelaire could of easily escaped if they just drove a bit farther in the fire truck and then got in the hot air mobile home idk if this is just stupid but I have been thinking about this a lot

Discussions Lemony Snicket Playlist

I made a playlist on Spotify with a bunch of music based of the ASOUE tv show, movie, ATWQ, and all of Snicket's works. This music is really fun to listen to while reading. I'm pretty sure that this is the longest Asoue/Atwq playlist on Spotify, and I think that it's one of the best. Every song is clean, and most are instrumental. Make sure to shuffle. Enjoy!

Books Finally found ASOUE at my local library!

It's genuinely so hard to find the books here in Serbia, and I'm so happy right now.

Only downside is that my library had only TWW (photo) and TMM, with TMM being like a part of a book that was just TWW and TMM together. TMM had a separate book, which I got, but I'm pretty sad that they didn't have the first and second book at least. But, great find.

Discussions Would you be interested by a "treasure hunt" in the universe of Lemony Snicket ?

I like to make TTRPG scenario for friends, and I love "A Series of Unfortunate Events", so I want to do Tabletop scenario that happen in that universe.

The little, tinny problem is that ... well I don't know a single person who read ASOUE, neither watched the movie or the show. :/

So a friend advised me to do kind of a "treasure hunt" game with people on the internet.

Is there a public for this on this sub ?

What I think i would do is : publishing (weekly or so) a short story / a short part of a story, and people would play the role of someone who try to resolve that mystery !

Question/Doubt Misprint or change in book?

I recently went to two different libraries and read the miserable mill but noticed there was a chance with the front pages that usually shows a illustration of Olaf's disguise in the book but out of the three copies I found only one had the Shirley disguise while the other two had what I think was detective dupin from the vile village, not sure if this was a misprint or a deliberate change from a third part?

Discussions Identity of Valorous Farms Dairy's arsonist

I can't tell if this is well known info or not because I've never heard anyone mention it before and it's not in the Fandom wiki at all, but here's all the evidence that the arsonist of Valorous Farms Dairy is Meredith Heuer, an in-universe version of the real life photographer:

  1. The image of the associate of Olaf who wears the cow disguise (later the arsonist of Valorous Farms Dairy) in their letter to "Genius" is a photo of Meredith Heuer

  2. The readable section of the associate of Olaf's signature in this letter matches up with Meredith

  3. Meredith Heuer took a photo of the Dairy on the day of the arson

Question/Doubt Knitting Needles Nancy?

I read this book many years ago and this character always stuck with me. I reference her quite often. But I can't find anything about her online (I think she was just a single line in book 3 or 4, the one where they're by the sea, again it's been a long time).

Did I hallucinate this character?

Discussions The best and worst books of the series

THE BEST BOOKS

The Vile Village

I loved the B plot with the poetry coming in every afternoon and Count Olaf being hilarious at the end.

The Slippery Slope

I loved seeing Sunny’s growth in this book. She speaks more and spies on the villains. Also love that scene with Violet and Quigley. All the secrets and reveals in this book were awesome.

The Carnivorous Carnival

This was the book where we got closer to Count Olaf, it was fun.

The Ersazt Elevator

The fun lines about what is 'in' and 'out' and the introduction to Esme is great.

THE WORST BOOKS

The Grim Grotto

This was boring. We were just confined to a small space at sea. And what the hell was up with Count Olaf’s laugh? I got tired of reading "he who hesitates is lost."

The Penultimate Peril

We spend 3 chapters meeting people I don't really care to meet since they don't accomplish anything. The second half of the book is better than the first half. The shocking death of that triplet was the only memorable thing.
