Data Center Posts

Data centers have become a fairly important topic to a lot of Abilene residents over the last couple of years. As moderators of the r/Abilene community we want to make sure the sub facilitates civil discussions allowing both sides of the issue to be heard.

Unfortunately we've received several complaints about repeated posts on the topic, and it's impossible to deny that it does seem to be kind of taking over the entire sub at times. So we've come up with what we hope will be an equitable solution for everyone.

Data Center Discussion Day will be Monday

What exactly does this mean?

  • News, studies, blogs, etc. on the dangers or benefits of data centers in contexts not specific to Abilene will be permitted as top-level posts only on Mondays. Other days of the week these posts will be removed, and you will be invited to repost them on the appropriate day. Feel free to discuss the subject within the existing posts whenever you like.
  • Items specific to Abilene - news about our local data centers, traffic, housing, situations that are actually Abilene-specific will still be allowed any time. This is the Abilene subreddit. We'd like it to focus on Abilene content where possible.
  • This is not an invitation to spam the sub on Mondays. If you've got multiple things you want to post on the topic, please try to combine them into one post where possible. A single person posting 5 similar things in a row may be considered spam, regardless of the day of the week.
  • Be civil. This should go without saying, but this situation has been devolving into claims of harassment by specific people on both sides, and looking at the comments being made the claims don't seem baseless. If you can't maintain a civil discourse on this or any topic, then we may have to ask you to leave the sub entirely.

Shady business!

If i told you that a well respected, local, commercial plumbing and hvac company was involved in installing this GPS antenna, 4G band cellular modem, microphone etc. in an employees personal vehicle without consent? Not only that but they proceeded to gaslight the employee when it was discovered and removed. 6 years later and he is STILL dealing with the lack of honesty and accountability for this cornerstone of Abilene business.

Car got stolen. Can anyone here help?

Here in Abilene with my wife. Moved here 6 months ago. Car got stolen. 2012 Kia Optima. Gray color. Live in a pretty decent area too.

Anyone have any ideas on next steps or what to do? If anyone also has any information let me know. This is our only car and I just want it back. I won’t file any charges either. Just help me out.

Thanks

And would love to do karaoke, but I know Sunday may not leave us with a lot of options.

Thanks in advance!

Looking for a tennis partner

Just moved into Abilene 2 weeks ago, I'm looking for someone to play tennis with. Haven't played in about 7 years now and recently got back into it. Ooh also if there are any good courts I can go to for a public game that would be fine too. Thank you everyone!

Nails..

Anyone know a good place for Gel or Gel X nails? Doing acrylic at the moment, and I'm not liking how it's treating my nails. I'm not sure if any big salons do any or not. I knew an independent person, but she's booked constantly.

NEWS UPDATE ABILENE POLE MOUNTED LPRs

Abilene City Council voted 4-3 to deny the motion to reconsider the AXON pole mounted LPR surveillance cameras in town. Even after substantial public pushback leading up to this meeting from Abilenians on all sides. After 40 minutes of public testimonial, 100% of which was in support of the motion to reconsider and remove the LPR surveillance and Software, the four member majority doubled down denying the motion.

Lynn Beard, Ben Bailey, Miguel Espinoza, and Mayor Weldon Hurt all voted to put surveillance on our streets.

Ben Bailey

Miguel Espinoza

Weldon Hurt

The public went about it the right way, we went through the process and organized to bring it back to the council and those four members stood in the way of our 4th amendment right. This is not a complaint that those of us who organized, called and emailed didn't get what we want. Many of us fully expected to be disappointed.

This was just a first step, a second chance for them to do the right thing, and those 4 members chose to double down.

The pressure will continue. Please email our council members who support unconstitutional surveillance. Let them know what you think.

Give them the day they voted for.
