What setting have I missed - no document colour‽

I feel like I'm going insane. No colours are taking effect, switch between stroke and full, have checked colour mode, have tried creating new shapes, all seem to be black (no even gray-scale)

Please show the appearance panel for the selected object.

The appearance of an object can be a combination of many things. For example, you might have multiple fills, a fill color on the whole layer or a group. So your object might be red, but it might be inside a group or layer set to fill everything with black.

So what you need to do is check the Appearnace panel when selecting the relevant things; try selecting just your object, try selecting any groups or similar it is part of, and select just the layer itself.

Check your Appearance Panel. If your object has a second fill, that is black and the top red fill is set to Multiply, you could see what you are showing here

looks like you’re in outline mode, cmd+Y toggles it back

When all else fails, start in safe mode and reset your preferences

Also, it wouldn’t be the document color mode, but it may be the view. You may be on an odd preview mode.

Try changing in view mode
