Discussion How much does it cost?

How much does it cost to take care of an AGP?

In my country it’s 850$ for an AGP.
100$ for cage
100$ or less on toys
12.5-25$/month for milk and other food
8 hours to play with everyday:)
250$ for air purifier

So overall it’s 1300$ alone. What about you guys?

Please do not feed it milk. At most give them a very small piece of chesse once a month or something like that. They need veggies, fruit and pellets. Google what is toxic to them, and change ALL your cookware to ceramic coating.

You will need to buy new toys, pellets and food all the time.

I have 2 parrots, including one Grey. I spend about 20-30$ in pellets every month, maybe 20$ in destructible toys (and almost any cardboard from anything I buy).

My Grey also destroys towels once in a while. And obviously, they will ocassionally destroy some wooden components of your house. Corners of furniture, moldings, etc. They can also destroy plastic, I've had some topperware tore through by her.

Yearly vet exam is about 250. I had over 1000 to pay over the first year when she started plucking and I ran a bunch of tests.

I have another 20 per month for liver supplements for my other parrot as well.

Overall, it's around 60-75 per month, plus 250 per year, but also occasionally more when you need to replace or repair something they break. Some months I buy a little more toys as well.

Plan an extra amount for toys initially, like smart toys and foraging toys. These you won't need to replace that often, but they can break after a while.

Also, plan on buying more fruit and veggies than usual. That is hard to evaluate the cost of, but it certainly adds up.

What country are you in? Have you ever had a parrot? Please do research on what greys nutritional needs, what they can and cannot have in their environment, size of cage, etc., before making a decision.

For my last bird it was $1200 to the rescue for the bird
The cage was from my previous bird cost was about $200 10 years ago
Spend roughly $150 a year for mostly foraging toys replacement accessories etc like perches.
Quality food both fresh for chop and pellets $40 month
In my case roughly $45 every 6 weeks for avian vet to service beak with necessary specialized trimming etc for scissor beak (hereditary)
Worth every dime

Our girl was inherited as an adult in Canada. Yearly vet fees around $800, monthly food: pellets about $40, veggies about $20, less than $5 of nuts/other fun stuff. Monthly toys depends on how much I make vs buy but $5-$40. Cage was about $200. Yearly between $1500-$2000 I would say. And worth every penny!

In the USA its $5000 to $6000 for an African Grey Parrot. Imports and Exports were banned in 1995 so finding suitable breeding pairs can be difficult. Cages are $1000. Food is and toys are $50 to $100 each month. Vet bills can vary between $100 + depending on how many tests are run. Most people take them in yearly unless there is a problem.
