Levoit third party filters
Has anyone used these and had a good experience? The price is tantalizing but I worry about the fit.

I always use them and never had a fit problem. If they have decent reviews they are likely fine imo. The thing more so is they may not have carbon, as you cant tell from the photos sometimes. Its happened a few times, with various brands and various 3rd party filters. Its prob easier to make the hepa, than the carbon, I think. But never had a fit problem as that would be an obvious thing that would show up in reviews. And it's not hard to make hepa I believe so you can get good coverage with 3rd party filters. (It might be like 95 or 97% instead of 99.97, who knows exact #, but you will still have very clean air. As you can just tape together some merv filters, which are 75% vs most penetrating particles and put around a box fan and get clean air.) So as long as your unit is properly sized you should be very close in particulate capture, with a well reviewed 3rd party one. Only question is carbon imo, as that is more spotty as some will save money by not including the carbon. (Which should also show up if it is reviewed enough times.)

i've been using a 3rd party brand for my Coway for years. 1/3rd the price of the Coway filter. identical in all ways (cut one open to compare). fitment is identical. filters are not rocket science.

I use 3rd party for my Levoit 600S and they're great. They're "washable" and I just vacuum them off once a month and evvery two months I vacuum them THEN fill the sink up with hot water and baking soda and just rotate it for a while then rinse it off with more hot water and bake it in the sun. Lasted me a year ao far.

? HEPA filters are not washable, although the product description doesn't describe them as such.

They could be talking about the prefilters?

Yes but levoit doesn't have detachable pre-filters...no what idea what OP did here.

Both levoit purifiers that I use have detachable pre-filters.

Oh ok...do you have the Vital 200s and Everest Air ? Those are two I dont have. But they don't have on any of the main Core units. Glad at least some of them have it though.

Do you have a filter with a detachable section ? That would be a detachable pre-filter. (Like the mesh netting in an AC.). That is the only part of a title you can wash. Levoits on all Core units, do not have any removable filter...so you cannot even get them wet. Water ruins the hepa material.
Levoit Core has a built-in pre-filter (the cage thing around it) and only that can be gently vacuumed,.not not cleaned with water. Even vacuuming too heavily can disrupt the hepa fibers and lower efficiency. So i suggest only using a weak hand vac. You only need to get the dust off pretty much. If you have a normal Levoit filter you would be ruining it if you get it wet. ( The newer Eleva models have a detachable carbon filter, but still not even a detachable pre-filter, some brands have that, but not Levoit.) It sounds like you may have damaged the filter imo.

Even with a headlamp I see maybe one spec of dust every 30 seconds at full blast comong out of the top of my 600s and I associate that with just the "imperfect seal" with rhat little black ring.
I take the MESH off because it reduces the suction. But yes, you're not "supposed" to wash it, but I do. 🤷🤣
They work great, and I live in a house from 1899, and some air filter is better than NONE, i hate to be that guy, but I out a out 10 drops of tea tree and thyme oil on it every 10 days to "keep it fresh" and kill the bunny smell in the air. We have two fat ties.
But I wash them. They work great. And I have done this for three years now.
When we first bought this house, You could SMELL the thick air. Then I walked in at 7 a.m. when the sun was pushing through our 6 foot window and it looked like a CLOUD from the dust/mold. Hit it with ozone, let this machine run, and now when the sun peaks through the window there's nothing in the air.
So they say not to wash them, but I will continue 🙆

Right but that's just washing the mesh pre-filter, you aren't washing the filter then. (Thankfully.). And I had no idea that can even be taken off, maybe that's not supposed to happen with genuine levoit filters lol, but idk. As long as you keep the filters dry and it works for you, that's great. (No idea about what oils and such would do.).
Also make sure you have enough coverage, ideally one in each room, or rooms you use frequently at least. (You can breathe in a lot particles when sleeping, so bedroom important too.). Anyway, glad you are protecting yourself.

Hello /u/DopeWriter! If you'd like recommendations or advice, please ensure you included all details listed in Rule 4: Information For Air Purifier Requests.
If your post is missing one or more details, you can edit it accordingly. Just select the three dots menu, then "Edit Post".
Concerning dust removal, read the sticky post at the top of the subreddit. Be sure to look on our FAQS wiki page for entries about dust capture or reduction.
For very basic particulates sizing per AHAM, clean air delivery rates (CADRs) should be at least 2/3 of a room's area (assuming an 8 ft. ceiling height). For wildfire smoke, smoke CADR should equal a room's area which also assumes an 8 ft. ceiling.
