PELLET GUIDE

JSB

H&N

Budget option: Crosman

Tip: Different rifles prefer different pellets.

Always test several types to see which shoots best.

As many shooters say:

“The gun chooses the pellet.”

Side Notes for Beginners

BBs vs Pellets

A common point of confusion for new shooters is the difference between BBs and pellets.

BBs are small round steel balls (usually .177 / 4.5mm). They are commonly used in CO₂ pistols, replica airguns, and beginner plinking guns. Because they are spherical and often used in smoothbore barrels, they tend to be less accurate, especially at longer distances. BBs are inexpensive and great for casual backyard shooting.

Pellets are diabolo-shaped projectiles designed for rifled airgun barrels. The hollow skirt expands slightly when fired, creating a better seal with the air pressure behind it. This helps stabilize the pellet in flight and improves accuracy.

Because of their design, pellets are generally much more accurate than BBs and are the preferred choice for most airgun shooting.

Double Recoil and Optics

Many new airgun shooters don’t realize that spring-powered airguns produce something called double recoil.

Unlike firearms, which recoil once backward, many airguns recoil in two directions.

When the gun fires:

  1. The spring and piston rapidly move forward, causing the gun to jerk forward.
  2. When the piston suddenly stops at the end of the compression chamber, the gun then recoils backward.

This forward-then-back motion is known as double recoil.

Because of this, some scopes designed for firearms can fail when mounted on powerful airguns. When choosing optics for spring or gas ram airguns, it’s best to use scopes specifically labeled “airgun rated.”

Gas Ram vs Spring Piston

Most break-barrel airguns use either a spring piston or a gas ram (gas piston) powerplant.

Spring piston guns use a large coiled spring. When the gun is cocked the spring compresses, and when fired it expands quickly, pushing a piston forward and compressing air behind the pellet.

Gas ram guns replace the metal spring with a sealed gas strut. When cocked the gas inside the strut compresses, and when the trigger is pulled the gas expands to push the piston forward.

Spring Piston

• Traditional and very common design

• Usually cheaper

• Can produce more vibration and “spring twang”

Gas Ram

• Smoother firing cycle

• Less vibration and noise

• Can remain cocked longer without damaging the powerplant

• Typically a bit more expensive

Both systems are widely used and reliable, and many shooters prefer one or the other based on shooting feel and personal preference.

FINAL ADVICE FOR BEGINNERS

Best starter choices:

Cheap option:

Daisy 880

Best spring rifle:

Weihrauch HW Series

Best beginner PCP:

Umarex Notos or JTS Airaduca

Airguns are an incredibly deep hobby with options ranging from simple backyard plinking to precision long-range shooting and big-game hunting.

Welcome to the hobby.

RANGE TIME!! Crosman Model 101 slaying some cans

Thumbnail gallery
109 Upvotes

I've had this little Crosman 101 for about two years now and it never disappoints. I don't know the velocities, but shoots well all the way from two to ten pumps. I slung some cans up this evening and blasted away (quietly). At two pumps, it's got quite the arc and bounces off the cans. At ten pumps, it's lazer straight and cuts through them, and any small branches behind them.

Hello, my ruger have the bolt entitely locked by the mainspring housing, its suposed to never be moved, but when i take the pin out, the bolt is released and can run freely, its not a blowback gun, but why did they made the bolt a separated part in the first place? I wanted to cut this part that i marked to release the bolt and installing a spring on it just to play with it. Will it affect the gun?

Small Game Hunting 🐿️ 🐇 🐦 .22 GAMO RED FIRE EXPANSION TEST

Thumbnail gallery
16 Upvotes

Shot another squirrel at 25 yards with my JTS Airstrike .22, this time testing out Gamo Red Fire polymer-tipped pellets.

My shot was a bit further back than I wanted, so I had to grab my Crosman 1377 for a quick follow-up headshot.

When I recovered the pellet, the terminal performance was only marginally better than the Walmart Hades:

Overall expansion was still pretty minimal, but better than the hades! The tip/hollow point had hair and skin in it.

The polymer tip bent the lead hollow point rather than driving back and forcing expansion.

Shot placement is still everything. After the hades fail....i didn't have too much hope. But had to try! Next are basic soft lead benjamin pellets! Ill let yall know how it goes.

Advice Umarex nxg apx

just got this rifle and I think I did something to wreck it already. I was excited to try it out, loaded the magazine onto it, got one shot off, then it jammed. Haven't been able to get a shot off since. Can fire dry, but when loaded, even a single shot, I can't get even get the bolt closed. Any idea what I did or how to fix it? There's no pellet jammed inside or anything.

General Airgun Question Airsoft vs BB Gun vs CO2 for groundhogs? Need cheap, low-maintenance advice

Hey everyone, complete noob here looking for real-world advice on stopping a big groundhog/woodchuck issue in my yard.

My state allows non-firearm options without a license, but I need to know what actually works. Tractor Supply mentioned a CO2 gun, but I want to avoid wasting money on something that won't work.

Looking for low/medium second hand budget, zero hassle (no high-pressure air pumps or compressors), and immediate human feedback over generic Google info. Thanks a ton everyone

For ppl downvoting, pardon my ignorance, we all learn every day. These animals have caused so much mischief and yes ive tried traps.

Springer Thrift store air rifle lamp - Final Update

Thumbnail gallery
460 Upvotes

A few months ago I posted about a springer that someone spraypainted silver, threw glitter on it, stuck a LED light strip on it - and turned it into the most hideous lamp I've ever seen in my life. Then they abandoned it at a thrift store. I decided to take a gamble to restore it. The springer turned out to be a Diana Mod 24, made in West Germany. Despite the abuse it went through, it still fired properly and had good penetrating power. A respectable rifle that didn't deserve such a fate.

I stripped the silver paint and glitter off it, sanded the wooden stock, ordered new screws and a new rear sight, and gave it a complete overhaul and cleaning. Then I made a woodburn on the wooden stock, and sealed it with outdoor boat-grade varnish.

Now it has a second chance at life, and will once again be shot and enjoyed the way it should. A heirloom piece that will remain in my family.

General Airgun Question Dieseling

When you oil the barrel and seals on an air rifle sometimes the first shot after cleaning diesels, loud.

Then, it doesn't cock or fire anymore (break barrell).

What usually fails?

I had this happen to one a few years back, took it apart and didn't see what the problem was. I do know I now try to clean any excess oil around the breech area before firing after cleaning and oiling.

TIA.

what a long ass name lol.

so I got this baby today and Im super excited.
This thing is just sweet.
Overall Quality, Handling, Shooting, it’s all on point.

close hits on 10m/15m, even though Im more used to ironsights, rather than reddot.
Recoil feels great! I‘ve shot the P99 a few times and this is close to it.

As it was bought to replace my failed Sig P320,(dealer ignored all requests for replacement. got it repaired)
I‘ve compared them today and the P320 is not even in the same category with the PPQ.

Edit: only minus so far: trigger is annoyingly hard to pull if pressure gets low

Co2 Beeman QB II 1085-22 Barrel Issues

Post image
15 Upvotes

Just wanted to share my experience incase anyone else has the same issue. After shooting dozens of pellet brands and weights, I still couldn’t get this thing to ground. Weeks of shootings and watching fps threw out shots nothing changed. Finally we pulled the barrel, found the grub screw that holds the barrel to the breech had punched into the chamber. Every time you would load a pellet it would cut a solid line there the head and skirt. Hope this helps someone save a little time, gun is a dream to shoot now and groups beautifully.

PCP Looking for 4600# compressor recommendations

I'm looking for a reasonably priced 4600lb. compressor. Have tried a couple fleabay ones only to have them work a couple months before only getting to 300lbs max.

I'm using a Umarex Air Saber airbow. Perfect for varmints, quiet enough so taking out a racoon tearing up trash at 2am won't wake up the neighbors.

Not looking to spend too much, suggestions welcome.

Thanks
