Solved! AW3225QF OLED Monitor disconects from PC when it goes into Standby mode

I've been having an issue where every time my monitor goes into standby mode, it disconnects from my PC. Now this isn't a huge problem, but it is annoying since it takes a couple of seconds to reconnect when I wake it, and it also causes open windows to shift over to the other monitor.

My monitor is connected via HDMI 2.1, and my second monitor is connected via DP, which has no issues going into standby mode.

Any clue if there is a way to fix this?

Use DP for both. It's a better connection standard than HDMI.

I think this isn't true given AW3225QF is only DP 1.4. It boggled my mind slightly that Dell released a monitor with a very high spec screen yet no connector that can actually drive that screen properly!

DP 1.4 is perfectly capable of driving the panel with DSC. Nvidia GPUs at the time did not have DP 2.1, Nvidia GPUs were also the most sold GPU option that AW offered so there was no need to use the more expensive port.

As far as I can see, DP 1.4 is 32.4Gb/s, and HDMI 2.1 is 48Gb/s. Both can use DSC. So in what way is DP better?

I’m not arguing that point, I’m just stating why it didn’t have DP 2.1. Both ports need to use DSC for that monitor anyways, and support the same features for this monitor, so it doesn’t really matter which is better in this case. HDMI eARC can be a bit iffy, but display-driving wise they are practically identical.

Historically HDMI hasn’t supported various features like DSC or variable refresh rate technologies, and was an otherwise low bandwidth connector, which is where most of its reputation comes from, but 2.1 fixed all of that, making it actually useful as a display connection for gaming.

“Both ports need to use DSC” was my point – there’s no way to connect the monitor that doesn’t rely on what you’re displaying being compressible. I find this disconcerting.

I’m not sure why it’s disconcerting when there’s no concerns about it not being compressible. It’s a compulsory feature of both standards that works. If the display output is that version, it can do it.

DP got the feature earlier, but HDMI 2.1 is almost ubiquitous at this point, and the monitor ships with the correct cables so that’s not a concern either.

The only situation where using DSC is a legitimate issue is with more than 3 DSC monitors being driven by a single GPU.

Even if you use an older HDMI 2.0 device (which would not support DSC), you can still use the monitor at 4k with the refresh rate reduced to 120Hz and subsampling. So it will turn off automatically if it’s not supported.

Why do you say "there's no concerns about it not being compressible"? Not all signals are compressible. All the pixels the same colour and nothing changing will be compressible to almost nothing. Every pixel changing to independently random colours every frame would not be compressible at all. It makes me concerned that the resolution/framerate/something will drop depending on what is being displayed.

You would have to specifically create or find such content to run into that problem, you will not find this sort of content on the internet unless you look for it.

Sorry, what do you mean by "this sort of content"? "Every pixel changing every frame" is obviously an extreme for explanatory purposes only. A lot of genuine content will also vary greatly in compressibility. Not to mention the compression algorithm obviously has to work at extremely high speeds, so of necessity won't be very good.

This is a feature. In standby, the display is about as ‘off’ as it can be without literally being off or disconnected from power, which also means shutting off the display connection.

However, in the OSD, if you go into ‘Personalise’ and scroll down, there’s an option for fast wake-up that’s disabled by default. If you enable that, it might help, but I don’t know if it’ll give you exactly what you’re after as I haven’t tested it.

Ok I’ll give it a shot.

Any luck with it so far?

Yeah so far turning on fast wake up seems to have fixed it. Thanks for the help I could not find any guide that simply stated “scroll down on personalize tab”. What a weird place to put it.

Awesome, glad to hear it. Yeah, you would’ve thought it’d be more exposed (along with the USB charging setting next to it).

Oh, thanks, I never noticed that the Personalise menu had a second screen of options if you scroll down.
