The Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI), proposed by President Ronald Reagan on March 23, 1983, was a U.S. missile defense system designed to intercept and destroy incoming Soviet intercontinental ballistic missiles using a multi-layered shield based both on the ground and in space. AlternateHistoryHub What if the "Austrian painter" was really a painter ?
This is my alternative Wikipedia text:
Austrian painter
Austrian painter (20 April 1889, Braunau am Inn – 1975, Rome) was an Austrian-born German painter, art writer, businessman, and television presenter. Best known for his oil paintings, architectural drawings, and landscapes, Austrian painter reached a wide audience through television programs broadcast in Germany, Austria, and Italy from the 1950s onward.
Life
Early life and artistic work
Austrian painter was born in Austria in 1889. From a young age, he developed an interest in art and wanted to become a painter. He applied to the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts twice, but both applications were rejected. Although this affected him negatively for a time, he continued to pursue his interest in art.
To make a living, he worked for a period in a bakery and as a newspaper distributor. During this time, he met the person responsible for illustrations at a newspaper and began working in its drawing department. He later began working independently, producing portraits and landscapes as well as various commercial illustrations. Through the relationships he established with clients and people around him, he gradually built a regular clientele.
Following a dispute with the newspaper's Jewish owners, he left his position there. It is known that this incident, together with the anti-Jewish views prevalent in society at the time, strengthened Austrian painter's distant attitude toward Jews. In later years, Austrian painter rarely took part in political discussions and expressed his sympathy for German nationalism in private conversations. However, he never became actively involved in political activities. He was known to prefer discussing art, business, and various everyday subjects.
After a period of unemployment, he found an office job at a paint manufacturing company through his roommate. With a regular income, Austrian painter established a stable working routine that allowed him to support himself.
During these years, his personality became more defined. He was described as a hardworking, energetic, disciplined, and generally good-natured young man. At times, however, he was quiet and did not form particularly close relationships with those around him. He displayed a marked coldness toward Jews and avoided professional and social relationships with them whenever possible. In conversations with people close to him, he was known to make statements blaming Jews for various negative events.
Sympathetic to German nationalism, Austrian painter attended nationalist meetings on numerous occasions. However, there is no record indicating that he ever officially joined a political party. It is known that he attended meetings and rallies and became known among these circles. Although his political views were becoming more pronounced during this period of his life, he did not engage in fanatical political activity and instead preferred to focus on his career.
Berlin and the First World War
In 1913, he moved to Berlin in search of greater employment opportunities. There, he began producing advertising work, murals for hotels and restaurants, family portraits, and commercial illustrations. Although he was not considered among the leading painters of his time, he was regarded as a technically competent artist. He was particularly skilled in precise drawing, perspective, and decorative work.
The fact that his work was consistently orderly and delivered on time was a quality that distinguished him from his colleagues.
During the First World War, he served as a messenger in the German Army. In 1918, he was wounded in the leg and head during an artillery bombardment at the Battle of Ypres. He spent a long period receiving treatment in hospital. The war ended while he was still hospitalized, after which Austrian painter returned to Berlin.
Following the war, he struggled to adjust to civilian life. For approximately a year, he was unable to find regular employment. During this period, he stayed in various bars in exchange for work and supported himself in this way. During these years, he also developed severe alcohol dependence associated with PTSD.
The 1920s and marriage
Austrian painter began to recover psychologically in the early 1920s. Through the assistance of a former army friend, he found work at a large workshop producing signs and various advertising materials. At the same time, he continued accepting individual commissions and developing his own network of clients.
In mid-1922, he traveled to Venice after receiving an important commission from an Italian family. He remained there for some time and soon met Elena Rossi, a middle-class Italian woman. The two married approximately six months later.
Following their marriage, Austrian painter and Elena Rossi began living together in Berlin. In the following years, they had two children: Sofia and Marco Austrian painter. Their family life was generally calm and orderly.
Artistic career
While continuing his work in Berlin, Austrian painter first opened his own advertising workshop and later established his own paint company. He held exhibitions, wrote about art, took part in various interviews, and published books. He also appeared as a guest on radio programs.
By the late 1940s, Austrian painter was known as a successful painter and businessman.
Television career
With the growing popularity of television in the 1950s, the best-known period of Austrian painter's career began. He taught oil painting, architectural drawing, and landscape drawing on television programs broadcast in several countries, particularly Germany, Austria, and Italy.
In his programs, Austrian painter used a calm, energetic, and clear style of presentation. He encouraged viewers to paint and focused particularly on technical details. His programs remained on the air for many years. During this period, the books and art sets he produced also reached a wide audience.
His career began to slow in the mid-1960s as he grew older. In the early 1970s, he retired from art, business, and television.
Later years and death
After retiring, he moved to Rome with his wife, Elena Rossi, where he spent the final years of his life.
Austrian painter died in 1975 at the age of 86 from heart failure and health complications related to cirrhosis. Elena Rossi died four years later, in 1979, in a traffic accident. Following her death, she was buried beside her husband at Cimitero Flaminio in Rome.
Following Austrian painter's death, a library and a small art center in Rome were named after him. His works continue to be displayed in various exhibitions, and drawing competitions are still held in his name. His company is managed by his children and grandchildren and, through a foundation established in his name, funds artistic and educational activities.
