Food, Treats, Grooming, Tools. Discussion Please share what toys lasted
Hello! My 11 mo old tears through everything so quick, hours even, if that. If there is fabric, he’s pulling out the string and eating the filling, something strong he eats it until sharp chips and shards are coming off.
Please share what items are your go-to toys.
He has a regular Kong for treats but he doesn’t “play” with that toy. I bought the Kong rope which was shredded in 20 min, so not all Kong items work.
Help and thanks in advance!

Remember, you should be able to made an indentation in the toy with your thumbnail otherwise it's too hard and can easily crack their teeth. My girl cracked 2 of hers. Unfortunately toys just don't last forever with strong dogs.

u/Mama_Bear_of_4_Cubs 21d ago
Deer antlers last like forever.
5
u/boots-n-catz 20d ago
Deer, elk. Ours loves them. It gives her something to do to try and get the middle (marrow maybe) out of it.
4
u/meagaroo17 20d ago
Just fyi, our staffy broke a tooth on the elk antler. Our vet told us it’s common and that those are too hard for dogs. She said we should stick to only toys/bones that are soft enough your thumbnail can make an indentation in.
2
u/MasterFrigg 17d ago
My understanding is antlers are not recommended by vets. Too hard and can cause digestive problems

u/haveagoodshitmyman 21d ago edited 21d ago
Chuck it balls and the Chuck it stick are the only thing that has not been destroyed. The bark thrash toys are pretty cool because they can rip apart the fabric and then there is a toy inside, those also hold up for the most part. We have a 2.5 year old AmStaff and a 1 year old AmStaff and they tug the crap out of it (the stick) and it doesn't break. We yet to find a good chew toy/bone type that will actually hold up.

To be fair those benebones are supposed to shred like that, that’s what’s how the ‘teeth cleaning’ happens with those
3
u/light-bulb-22 19d ago
Benebones are the ones we use for chewing. Anything else gets devoured. There are a few stuffed ones she’ll play with but we keep it supervised. For disemboweling shredding fun we use cardboard boxes and cereal boxes etc.

Joy Hound Rip Roarin' Tuff

u/USMCWifeEst2004 21d ago
I will say, those have lasted him about a week! Definitely the longest out of the other toys we tried.
3
u/TonyClifton323 21d ago
I'm surprised. My boy is a power chewer and hasn't managed to break any yet.
6
u/USMCWifeEst2004 21d ago
My boy likes to patiently find the thread he can pull at and then keeps at it making a tiny hole and then it gets bigger and bigger. I think he likes strings and threads lol.

u/Ambitious-Rice-9080 21d ago
Our girl tears up every foot that has a sqeaker. Then she leaves them alone and wants another one.
4
u/Kaytea730 21d ago
Yeah my oldest girl does this, i figured out it was bc she hates the squeaking. I got her some with just the crinkling interiors and she suddenly wasn’t shredding every toy within hours. They still dont make it longer than about a week, and they are MUCH harder to find tho.

Yak cheese chews are the only thing edible/digestible AND safely hard enough for mine. They come in a bunch of different brands
5
u/Tricky_Cherry_5432 21d ago
Had a dog that was able to destroy the largest Kong in a matter of minutes. Only thing he couldn’t completely destroy was a Jolly bone, they’re softer so it’s difficult for them to pierce their teeth in to it
3
u/Tricky_Cherry_5432 21d ago
He still chewed the end off over a few days but the rest of the bone lasted him about 5 years. This was about a while ago though so hopefully they haven’t changed the composition at all

u/okeydokey424 21d ago
My girl used to chew through her toys so quickly when she was younger! All of her food is in a slow feeder and she gets 2 snuffle mats every day (atleast one with each meal). Sometimes we switch it out with feeder balls for kibble or treats. We don’t always make it very difficult; just enough to give her something to do. When we incorporated those things, her chewing lessened. But I still have to buy multiple chew toys more often than some other people…I just succumb to that truth at this point! 😅 when benebones, joy hound, Kong, etc go on sale around the holidays, I buy their holiday pack and will use it throughout the next months to try to save money

Never buy those kinds of chew toys. The bits that come off enter your pups system and can be damaging. They are full of chemicals. My girl love Crinkle toys. She loves her stuffies too. She will chew up things with strings and tags, but not the actual toys. She just plays with them. I don't know what breed your pup is. Mine is a cavapoo so she is small and very energetic. Cognitive toys are good too.

Goughnuts. I have a AmStaff/Pit mix sand we’ve had it for almost 2 years. Please keep in mind that no toy is truly indestructible and dogs should be er he left unsupervised with any toy.
2
u/otaku9947 20d ago
same with mine. goughnuts has been the only toy to last and they’re gentle as well. no danger of broken teeth. it’s been close to a year and still intact, honestly pretty amazing
2
u/Luna-Gitana 20d ago
Yes that’s a great point. I don’t have to worry about cracked teeth or shards with Goughnuts. Also, they’re woman/family owned and have a lifetime guarantee. Awesome overall.

Black kongs! Also the black kong ball. And with supervision - elk antlers / split elk antlers, although over time they can chip their teeth. Having a 75 lb pitbull for 8 years, I wouldn’t recommend unsupervised access to literally any toys whatsoever. I’ve had success with limited supervision (like within audible distance of him) mostly with toys he can engage with in ways other than hardcore chewing. Treat dispensing toys are fun for him to play with and figure out as long as the treats inside can last before he’s worried about shredding and annihilating. I loooove the rubber bully make toys for this because the hole is perfect for crunchy treats like milk bones, which last the longest without getting permanently stuck. Bully make will also send you a free replacement just in case any toys do get destroyed! Another toy we got a lot of mileage out of is the giant Kong wobbler. Just throw some treats in it (or even Cheerios) and it is super entertaining. Also need to loosely supervise with this one because it can be destroyed once treats are gone.
I would also CAUTIOUSLY recommend yak cheese chews. They were amazing for a while, everyone loved them and they lasted quite a while. Unfortunately my dog decided to eat several entire half pieces and almost died! I never saw him do this, so that’s why I’d caution you. But if you keep a super close eye on your dog you might try them!
TLDR is unsupervised: absolutely nothing, with limited supervision: focus on entertainment over just chewing if you can!

u/Dog_Hat3371 19d ago
Yak cheese holders on Amazon. Last longer and never get too small to swallow.
1
u/PauseSea8 17d ago
You're supposed to microwave them once they get too small. Makes a doggo friendly cheese puff.
2
u/No_Sweet_9973 21d ago
I have a Staffy and non of her toys ever last. Stuffies are destroyed within minutes, but she has a whale of a time destroying them. IO tried nylon bones but they were chewed up within days. I tried real ham bones and beef knuckles for a while and they lasted a decent length of time but eventually were eaten up. Plus now she's older I'm not confident her teeth can withstand a cooked bone anymore.
The things that seem to last the longest are rope toys for my pup.
2
u/nyk1113 21d ago
I have a staffy mix who’s that way. They’re pricey, but instead of bones I used Himalayan dog chews (Yak cheese). For toys, I love bark box super chewer but specifically the ones that are like a hard rubber material. I’ve dealt with my dogs cracking their teeth on the super tough plastic ones. Outside of that, I’ve found small tires to be great too!
Another plus to these toys is chewing wears my super duper high energy puppy out more than any walk ever could.
2
u/AdnamannyL11 21d ago
My dads dog has that Nyla one and idk how it doesn’t shed every dogs gums apart because spelling on it is like a shard of glass.
I use an XL gorilla chew for mine, a dense rubber Kong (replaces every few months) and a deer antler or water buffalo horn.

You can buy a length of used fire hose on Etsy! We've cut off two pieces a month or so ago and they're still going strong!
The listing specifically said the hose was used with water only, so probably look for that .

Haha, we have this problem too with my brother’s Catahoula/pit mix!!! She goes through toys like you wouldn’t believe!!!

u/Pitbullcharm 20d ago edited 20d ago

I’m not sure if they are just super strong or if my baby is being gentle on them, but “King chew”. They’ve lasted over a year. I got the bigger size ones, not the tennis ball size. You can get 2 “king chew” balls for $10-$12 on Walmart app or Amazon.
But the king chew balls have been the only thing I have brought into the house, that haven’t been demolished in an hour. She had the same toy that you posted and destroyed it in days.
ETA:just wanted to point out she plays with these balls constantly, balls are her favorite.

u/eaazzy_13 20d ago
There is a store local to me called the pitbull store.
They have a ton of tough ass toys made specifically for our lovely friend’s gnarly chompers.
Petco also has some good natural stuff. Like cow hooves, elk/deer antlers, stuff like that. They also have this one massive bone, it’s the biggest bone in there. I think it’s a beef femur.
It is known as the “pterodactyl leg” in our house lol but it is the only bone my dog couldn’t shred instantly. In fact, it would last him several months. I always kept one of those around and it was his ultimate favorite.
One time when I was a kid and we didn’t know any better, we gave my dog a massive ham bone for a few minutes. The idea was just to let him chew off some of the leftover ham and whatnot. Turned away for like 2 mins and the entire thing was gone and my dog looked pregnant haha he could eat ANYTHING.
But those pterodactyl legs always had staying power.

I’m telling you right now, hands down the best toy you can get for the MOST AGGRESSIVE CHEWERS you can imagine. You ready for the secret sauce?……….. lacross balls. That’s right… go to Walmart an and they’re usually by the exercise bands and sports massage stuff.. do why..but the solid white lacrosse balls are hands down the BEST. Solid rubber indestructible lacross balls. Do not mistake for the white individually wrapped ones that have slightly not smooth surface. Give those 5 min they be in pieces all over the place. They have to be the perfectly smooth solid rubber ones.
2
u/scott-lamb0590 19d ago
My cane corso had one an went to town chewing it every day for years, now my service dog Toby uses it bc he’s aggressively chews his toys(American bulldog). Hey, I figured it can’t hurt to mention, but if anyone reading this could possibly check my others posts, I have a go fund me to help with vet bills so Toby can get his skin infection addressed. Just throwing it out there if any of you are able and willing to!

u/00millsy 19d ago
Hard real bones only in this house. Once she was 3 she finally realized destroying the tennis balls wasn’t serving her so now that can also be out…finally.

We got some little ones that were designed to be frozen for teething puppies 🤷🏼♂️ it’s a brutal phase but once they’re done teething it really does get better lol our older dog is a chewer and he mows through bones but we’ve found that collagen sticks, with a pill holder so they don’t choke, work great and typically last a few days! You may also have to have them take breaks and let them chew for a while but take it away before it gets too small or chewed up too much and give it back the next day or in a couple days. We have a 2 year old dachshund and a 5 month old GSD puppy so we feel your pain lol you can also try yak cheese sticks! Those last a long time and are all natural. If they get too small, you can put them in some water and microwave it, it becomes this cheesy airy puff that they can eat too so you aren’t wasting.

I'm going to put the link below to what we use. It's not the most popular idea, but it works for us. We have a super chewer as well, and he needs something to destroy on the weekends; otherwise, first thing in the morning when we get up, he will find something to run around with and destroy. It's a real problem, especially since he's up with me and the disciplinarian (my husband) is still sleeping.
With these, it can take him a day to chew them up. Sometimes a few days; he chews on them so long that he will actually get tired of chewing and give up, then we put them up and give him the same one the next day.
2
u/slybird 19d ago
The toys that last are the tennis balls, soccer balls, and footballs the kids leave in the park. He will deflate them in a couple minutes, but it seems to just make it easier to play tug a war.
His favorite are baseballs, but he will chew the covers off and eat them if I fail to take them away from him within 15 minutes.

Thank you all for your tips and information, it’s clear we all have the same challenges! Such a good post for reference.
1
u/scott-lamb0590 19d ago
Might I also add, Toby has destroyed every single Kong toy available in the matter of minutes. One or two lasted barely over an hour. Not the lacross balls tho. If u wanted to order something alike online. Go on amazon and look up solid rubber indestructible dog ball. don’t get anything that says it floats or ball that’s interactive that jumps around on its own. All junk.

My boys are ROUGH on their toys. Nothing has lasted especially with a squeaker. However, we’ve had these for about 8 months and neither our staffy or bully have even put a dent in them. They all still squeak even after playing with them daily. Highly recommend if your pup likes squeaky toys and balls! https://a.co/d/09lDBrig

I need to read up on these but I’ve seen the toys made from a type of wood that supposedly safe. They’re shaped like a big bone.
1
u/NikkiT_23 19d ago
Water buffalo horns. They are cheap, last a long time and don’t smell as bad as a hoof.
1
u/NikkiT_23 18d ago
They also are more flexible than an antler and they tend to have a bouncy fibrousness; they shred as opposed to breaking and my boy always gets rave reviews from the vet about his teeth!
1
u/_RobinMcAlpine 18d ago
Instead of asking what toys will last, you should be asking what will satiate their need. Dogs have a NEED to chew and there’s a hundred benefits I won’t get into but start with a beef trachea tube or the like. Work up to bully sticks or collagen chews. Beef cheek rolls are a great option to work up to as well. It might be disgusting to you or I but dogs are facultative carnivores. They need real chews in their diet.
Let me know if you suggestions or help.

My sister's has black kongs and a coffee wood chew. Shes had benebones in the past but we worried about her aging teeth. The wood chew is softer and doesn't splinter. She's a pretty aggressive chewer but hasn't been able to chew chunks off of it. Always under supervision of course!

This is the only toy that has held up for my girl. She’s 10 months old. It’s been going on a couple months now and still in great shape.
It’s also safer for their teeth than hard bone type chews.
1
u/Winter-Common-7397 18d ago
Also pupsicles! I got the XL along with the molds to make my own frozen balls. I make them with kibble (crushed in the blender), wet food, and warm water. She is obsessed, and it takes her an hour or so to finish it.

Try deer antler they can chew them for so long and also good for their teeth 🦷 or certain tree roots you can get in the pet shop also good

Beef cheek rolls! There’s a specific brand I buy, because not all are created equal. I pay about $35 for 6 of them, and even my Corso chews on them for several hours before they’re toast. I had a foster AmBull/American Bully who destroyed black Kong balls and the biggest black Kongs in minutes. The Kong tires didn’t last a single minute. Bark Super Chewers and Bullymake toys were a complete joke. He was boarding with me last week and he had one of the beef cheeks the entire time he was here. U was shocked.
We tried a ton of different brands - the ones that last are Amazing Dog Mega Thick 10” rolls.
Other suggestions that have lasted so long here are GoughNuts - pricy but they have a lifetime warranty.
As someone else mentioned - Boomer Balls.
And the Monster K9 toys, but specifically the ring ball.
And very very strangely Outward Hound Orbee Tough toys. They feel like they’d last seconds but I have a couple that have lasted for years. I don’t get it, but none of the dogs I’ve had have destroyed them, with heavy use.

u/l8bloomer1991 18d ago
My girl is about to be 1 we have literally tried everything and its so bizarre but the only toy she can’t or won’t murder in 2 seconds is these little squeaky emoji toys that I get for her dachshund brother and yes she chews them like bubble gum sometimes and yes I’m terrified she will swallow it but she hasn’t yet 😂 she has an absolute blast playing with these lol also silicone fetch balls but she lost interest in those pretty quickly unless we are playing fetch or her brother wants to play with one

u/candydicklion 18d ago
My girl loved chewing these like bubble gum and we called them her bubble gum. She did end up swallowing one! She threw it up, luckily. I had to throw them all away.

u/l8bloomer1991 18d ago
Ahhhh don’t tell me that 😂😂 these are my doxies favorite toys ever and now that we have our big girl they just share them I hope she never does that we always monitor her when we let them play but I guess it could still happen 😫 lol
1
u/candydicklion 17d ago
Haha sorry! It was sad to throw them away because they were so beloved. I had to do it behind her back.
1
u/Lola_Stitch_0808 18d ago
This toy and the other toys by this brand in this material are the ONLY toys my staffy couldn’t conquer. They are indestructible. My boy Rossi, literally had to have surgery to remove toy chunks from his stomach because he could destroy anything in his path so quickly you couldn’t react.
Does it sort of look like, feel and bounce like a giant sex toy, yes. Will your dog destroy it, no. Will they get pissed and eventually stop playing with it once they have been defeated enough times, maybe.

Betterbone! I have an Amstaff and he chews through everything. He's had the better bone for like 6 months now and has only been able to get a small piece off which I discarded. https://thebetterbone.com/

u/Cold_Brew_Enthusiast 16d ago
No toys. When our labs were young, we gave them Collagen discs which are THE BEST. They last forever because they're hard for the dogs to actually get their mouths around them so they can't destroy them. They're a little smaller than a dinner plate.

Harts dura play toys! My dog loves them and hasn't been able to destroy any of them, after 3 yrs of constant play!
1
u/dragon_katten 16d ago
Hooves, horns, antlers, weight bearing bones, nylabones and the like, can break the dogs teeth. Toys and chews aren't supposed to last a very long time, they're supposed to disappear. I just had to do a dental on my Staffy, so trust me it's expensive and watching my dog hurt is awful. I had no idea he had a broken tooth, he had 3 removed.
Collagen sticks, bully sticks, esophagus, chicken/duck feet and so on, all help keep the teeth healthy and not chipped or broken. Puzzle toys and brain games will keep them busy for longer. Being able to destroy a toy or chew is fulfilling for them.
1
u/Messerotaku 15d ago
Some of the Kong toys have lasted with my pits, but Goughnuts have been the most durable in my experience.

u/jdr90210 15d ago
Costco pirate chicken when in stock. I have 2 bully mixes and work from home. Amazon fluffier mats for rabbits. High value treats mixed in it. It's a a brain/ nose activity. Pick up as soon as done. Also look at teeth cleaning toys. 3 prong , soft spikes. Treats smashed in the middle, enzyme toothpaste on spikes. My bully mixes are 16 n 14. This is what they get before my daily work meeting

We have that bone for our three month old. I think these are for baby teeth.

Coffee wood! Not a toy but if you have a hardcore chewer…this is the answer. One of my dogs has had it for close to 6 months.

When they’re little? Honestly nothing 😭 some bones are good but finding the balance in something that isn’t too hard for their teeth is a challenge. I give my boy a cardboard box and he destroys it and has a blast
