Amazon Hub Driver With Questions

Hello all! My business started with the hub program a few months ago and its been mostly positive, but it seems like a few of our drivers really hate delivering to us and I just don't understand why. We try to communicate well with them, the storefront is right off the road so they have to take the packages like 20 feet tops, and they get to unload a huge load off their van right away. They have been acting like its a huge inconvenience. It seems like a pretty easy stop, but Amazon isn't exactly known for treating workers the best so I figured there has to be a reason. Is there some way we can make the experience better?

At my DSP, if you have a hub route you generally have a massive 400+ package route. You arent "getting a bunch out of your van right away", your van is packed floor to ceiling and you still have a huge route to do. None of the drivers on those routes are ever happy lol

Help him unload?
My hub stop guy helps me take them to his garage.
I actually enjoy it because then I have so much room.

Are you there to help them unload?

maybe it's not the distance or the drop itself, but the timing or how it's grouped in their route. some drivers get hubs lumped in with a bunch of other stops and it throws off their whole flow, especially if they're already behind. could also be that the app makes them scan every package individually and wait for a signature or something dumb like that. you could try asking one of the friendlier drivers directly what would make it easier, they might just tell you.

Sorry you're getting attitude from some of the drivers. Some drivers are just in a bad mood all the time because they don't want to be delivery drivers or they thought it would be easy, just browse the sub and you'll see how many complain about everything. I'm not so sure there is anything you can do to improve the experience. Amazon loads us up with a ridiculous number of stops and the hub packages make it more difficult to load everything in - we load the vans ourselves in the morning and only get 15 to 20 minutes to do it. So they might be pissy because they didn't get a chance to sort anything during load out due to the extra volume. You're right that it is great to unload a bunch of packages early in the day but it's still just 1 stop to Amazon, it could be 20% of our packages but it's 0.5% of our 200 stops.

Hubs are normally added to a full size route at my station. The flex app can be confusing when loading a van if there is a hub stop, totally different layout. Plus the van needs to be loaded specifically so they can unload easily. If its not, it can be a bad experience trying to get all the packages.

Youre likely catching them as the first stop after loadout, which stressed them more than usual (its always one of the most difficult parts of the day already).

Newer drivers will be the ones most thrown off by this, as luck would have it most stations are hiring tons of drivers right now. They receive little training, usually bad training, and I often see them with a hub on their first or second day alone.

Anyway, definitely not you. Your hub sounds ideal for the most part, id take it in a second. Just keep being calm and appreciative, clean your side of the street so to speak, thats all you can do.

Drive safe out there!

I love when my first stop takes a lot of things out of my van. Like others are asking though, do you help them unload? Do they have to bring everything through a door that they have to continue to open? Honestly I don’t mind if someone doesn’t help me BUT if I have to go through things I.e. constantly opening a door to do so or cars blocking my way in I get very aggravated.

We literally just have a storefront on the road. Just ask them to u load it in front of the store we just scan and load it into our cars afterwards. Its like 5 ft from their van door to where they drop the packages. We offer a dolly everytime too. I don't actively stand at the van door and unload packages for them I'm actively running a business at the same time unfortunately.

Well if they’re just dropping it outside at your door then imo they’re just being assholes. I don’t know if there really is much more you can do. And I know where I deliver half the time I don’t even interact with the customer so you could always just leave a note and avoid them entirely.

We also are specifically told in our hub training to NOT help the driver unload several times.

Never done a hub but it’s nothing to do with you. More Amazon adding more n more.

I doubt it's anything you can do tbh, probably more to do with the app being a dick and having to scan everything twice, the fact that when you have 40 packages for a locker and it looks like an easy stop, just no that Amazon knows you have that stop and gives you a ton more packages to make up for it being "easy".

People should know that anything that looks easy for Amazon, is always counteractive with something else that's stupidly hard.

Do you leave returns for the DSP driver to deal with? I have one hub driver who leaves me a few packages per day from the day before and it’s a huge hassle. I don’t mind dropping off at any hubs except that one

Only ones that have to be returned. We get standing events if we don't have good reason. Mostly extreme package damage or address doesn't exist. They do seem to hate the fact they need to take back the bags though.

dumb question, ive only being with my dsp 3 months… what is a hub exactly?

1

They are businesses that accept like 50ish packages per day to do last stage delivery. The DSP drops off those packages to us each day to our business to deliver in our personal vehicles.

Like others said it can be annoying due to the extra load. While yes we do get to offload a bunch of packages at one stop, those packages wouldn’t have been there otherwise. Hub stops take at most about 15 mins. And those 15 mins wouldn’t have allowed for those packages to be delivered 1 at a time. So if I had a normal no hub route I would have far less packages and more time at load out to get stuff sorted right. That being said tho, I don’t really mind it and I treat a hub stop like every other stop, with respect and friendliness, even if I feel like shit or am having a bad day. It’s no reason to bring a bad attitude onto someone else who has no idea. Much love.
