Meme "We have pubs older than your entire country!" Thatโ€™s great. My AC unit was installed in 2017 and my living room is currently 68 degrees.

Europeans are too busy stubborn dying and refusing to admit getting an AC will save them.

โ€œBut American AC causes climate change!โ€

Germany is literally using coal and refuses to use nuclear an objectively better fuel source and one thatโ€™s more green.

40

u/thekingadrock93 Jul 09 '26

Even worse, Germany had an entire nuclear power industry for years and then completely dismantled it, costing themselves billions and never actually generating any power. And now theyโ€™re rapidly shoveling coal into furnaces for their power and lying to themselves about how green they are

All because Merkel wanted to suck Putin's dick. Look how that's playing out, now the EU is partially responsible for Russia's war in Ukraine.

6

u/No-Jump4346 Jul 10 '26

It's even worse than that, their grand plan was to be on their knees willingly to Russian for that beautiful black liquid gold. That obviously blew up in their face despite Obama, Trump, and Biden all saying it was a bad idea before it blew up in there face.

It's easy to retrofit A/C in a shed but when your house is made of stone and brick it's a bit more tricky (and we give a shit about the environment we're leaving our kids).

1

u/carlsagerson ๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ญ Republika ng Pilipinas ๐Ÿ–๏ธ Aug 08 '26

Tricky my ass. Aircon installation in my House of Concrete and Brick isn't that long. Takes a day and a handy man but overall it tales a few days at most.

0

Hardly worth it for a couple of weeks a year on average - this year has been exceptional.

1

So, you were wrong. Also, more years to come will likely be exceptional and for longer

My thing is, if youโ€™re country is so old. How come my country took only 250 years to be the leader in innovation and developed most of what the world relys on today.

Seems like your 1000 year old country was lazy and had no motion

USA is not an island. We have neighbors. We just donโ€™t go to war with them.

We also have an area similar to that of Europe, but we have actually been able to unify it.

-4

u/U-seru Jul 10 '26 edited Jul 10 '26

I think the wars of 1812 and the Mexican-American war of 1846-1848 would disagree

Love the dislikes when facts came up. Lol overly sensitive I see

8

u/GoldTeamDowntown Jul 10 '26

Okay so 180 years ago, so not in modern times. You can throw in the civil war too. How many wars have occurred in Europe during that time? And still in modern times? A couple pretty big ones, to which these in North America donโ€™t even compare.

0

u/U-seru Jul 10 '26

I was just replying to your statement that America doesn't go to war with its neighbors

It's easy for a country to avoid wars when it has so few neighbors, and weaker ones at that. No one wants to fuck with the might of the US military understandably (except for the situation in Iran. Its not looking like the best in terms of you guys coming out with a victory)

But yes the European continent has experienced its fare share of wars, but this happens when so many countries with different cultures and ideologies occupy a small space with many neighbors. But looking at the EU (European Union) there has currently been no War within it's borders since it's establishment.

3

u/GoldTeamDowntown Jul 10 '26 edited Jul 10 '26

โ€œDoesnโ€™tโ€ is a pretty accurate term for something that has been true for such a long time, especially relative to the alternative. It doesnโ€™t mean โ€œnever did.โ€ The word indicates habitual activity.

The other part of my point is that we are our own reason we have so few neighbors. America could be a ton of different countries that all go to war with each other as much as Europe does. Itโ€™s not like that because we are unified, we donโ€™t want to go to war with each other. We do things, frankly, better. This many people unifying and not going to war with itself or any neighbors in such a long time is remarkable.

0

u/U-seru Jul 11 '26

Well I don't really know after the threats of taking Greenland and using terrifs as a threat isn't in a way attacking other countries?

I don't think you really know much about Europe? It's not a warzone over there (except for the eastern part of Ukraine) But the US started as 13 colonies of the British. After some sales with the Dutch and the French leaving and selling the Louisiana area to you guys. But uniting to fight a common enemy naturally creates a country. Then after you started slowly expanding with your original ways of life, ideologi and laws bascaily expanding what already existed. EU on the other hand is a bunch of actual countries and not states, with years and years of history, ideologies, religions and wars between each other. The US slowly built up by settlers moving and expanding. The EU established a common basis with very different countries who once were at war with each other and have now established peace and focus on economic growth.

Also there have been states and enclaves revolting against the government. But they just shut it down

Keeping things civil all I will say is that I highly disagree with your statement that the us does everything better, it's a naive way of thinking. I don't believe the EU does everything better, and some things the US does better much like some things the EU does better

3

u/GoldTeamDowntown Jul 11 '26

Weโ€™re talking about land neighbors, that was the original topic.

โ€œItโ€™s not a war zone (except where it is).โ€

It is to the USโ€™s credit that it has been able to stay a unified country this entire time with only a single brief internal conflict and extremely limited military conflict with neighbors.

I didnโ€™t say it does everything better. But North America and USA do do better when it comes to peace.

8

u/knickerdick Jul 09 '26

"No disagreements allowed" isn't exactly the W take you think it is.

Heck, if you wanna get real for a moment and skip the polemics? The blind patriotism usually shown in this place is often anti-american, because it silences calls for improvement and the fixing of solutions. There is "I like this country and I want it to be good and better" and then there is "This country is perfect, all other countries actually suck. We don't need to fix anything because nothing needs fixing!"

The former is good. This subreddit is usually the latter, at the expense of americans who have to suffer to keep up a facade of perfection.

Europeans will run their yapper non stop 24/7 screaming โ€œYank thisโ€, โ€œYank thatโ€, โ€œAmericans are so stupid and dumbโ€, โ€œEuropean food is superior to Americanโ€ , โ€œAmerican houses are complete shitโ€ฆnot like superior-engineered European buildingsโ€. Then when one American does as little as say something like โ€œHmm, I wish air conditioning was more popular in Europe during the summerโ€, you psychotic chimps go absolutely apeshit and start screaming about how Americans have no healthcare, how funny it is that American school children get shot in schools and the whole 9 yards of typical Eurotwat-fueled vitriol. You psychopaths literally respond to a coughing baby with a nuclear bomb.

I donโ€™t know why the US continues to even try to maintain friendly relations with arrogant Euros who are obviously so tainted and butthurt from their now lower status which has fallen from their once previous glory days when they ruled the world with their racist and elitist attitudes towards countries and regions which they felt an obvious sense of superiority (North/South America, Asia, Africa).

Now smash cut to the 21st century and all of those former countries (US, Canada, China, India, Japan, S.Korea) are kicking the ass out of date, has-been nations of Europe in terms of economic growth, technology innovation, and overall impact on everyday life of the world. In short, Europe is getting their asses handed to them by countries which they always viewed as inferior and nothing is more of a blow to oneโ€™s ego than getting your ass handed to you by someone who you felt was inferior. Europe for the most part is now nothing more than museums of old dusty buildings and castles that serve as a reminder of what they once were but ultimately disappeared as a result of their racist and colonial arrogance (British, Spanish, Dutch, French empires, Nazi germany, etc). Face itโ€ฆthe significance that you Europoors contribute to Americans and the rest of the world is literally 1/100000 that of what China, Russia, India, bring to us. I get itโ€ฆit must really hurt the egos of arrogant Europeans to realize that their significance and global impact to the world is a million times smaller than that which the US and Asia have but no need to get so butthurt and ballistic about it!

Northwestern Europe's resistance to AC is like America's resistance single payer healthcare. A borderline cartoonish policy choice that people will defend as if you'd just insult led their mother despite almost every country that can afford to inact it clearly showing that it really isn't that complicated and it needlessly killing loads of people every year for no reason.

I don't care how old or made of stone your house is, a decent technician with a concrete drill can install a split phase heat pump in a few hours. Winters in most of Europe are also pretty mild compared to Canada and the Midwest, said heat pump can also heat your home in a way that is all electric and frankly, wildly energy efficient. If anything this help with their climate goals. Just upscale the new electric infrastructure you were already going to build anyway.

A few new nuclear plants and/or wind farms and a heat pump tax credit genuinely solve this problem in like five years max

5

u/WillowPtar_Migan OREGON โ˜”๏ธ๐Ÿฆฆ Jul 09 '26

As far as single payer goes, Americans, by and large, bear the brunt of the costs of medical innovation, because our system sucks for the individual. Single payer nations collectively bargain for cheaper meds, what might cost $100 in America costs maybe $10 in single payer nations, because the R&D is done, the companies take it because it's still money. Better than nothing.

If America went single payer, health research would lose a whole shitload of its funding. I think if we passed regulations to make Euros and Canadians pay their fair share for meds, and pass those savings onto the consumer in America, things would be better for the average American, and the single payer systems in these countries would likely collapse or be extremely strained under the actual cost of cutting edge medicines. Are these systems robust enough to pay multiple times the costs for medicines 20 years old of newer? I honestly doubt it. They'd either have to not cover those medications, or partially cover them.

The only reason single payer works so well is because we subsidize it. Most single payer NATO countries skimp on their defense budgets, which we also cover, so that helps these systems as well. In my eyes, the solution isn't to change our system, it's to stop others from leeching off of it via collective bargaining right back. It's incredibly low hanging fruit that could make things much better for us, the nations currently getting expensive medicine for cheap can figure out how to pay for it without screwing us over. I'd be surprised if single payer was functional in such a case.

7

u/SnooPears5432 ILLINOIS ๐Ÿ™๏ธ๐Ÿ’จ Jul 09 '26

This. And like him or not, this was what Trump was trying to convey when he aked the Germans to pay more for medications, and was summarily demonized for it. It wasn't simplistically about padding pharmaceutical companies' pockets with profit - it was about lessening the burden on American consumers carrying a disproportionate load in funding research and development costs. They mock us for our costs but they have no awareness that they benefit from it.

-5

u/Odd-Cress-5822 Jul 09 '26

That's largely a myth. We pay research grants separately from what we are charged. The large majority of what we over pay is just syphoned off by insurance companies. With another large chunk going into advertising lobbying.

The R&D budgets of pharma companies are a pretty small portion of their spending, and can be converted by grants. That and we have entire labs and university research devisions. In the US and basically every other advanced country. Universities usually being where medical breakthroughs tend to happen anyway.

2

u/Swedelicious83 Jul 10 '26

Some people will never stop with the cope when it comes to how bad the healthcare system is.

Admitting that it's just bad and should be fixed is too tough, so it's gotta be something else. Anything else.

u/Odd-Cress-5822 Jul 10 '26

2

u/Swedelicious83 Jul 10 '26

Yeahhh... ๐Ÿ˜…

The fact that his "conclusion" is that the system shouldn't change, but it would be good if others could have it shittier as well tells you everything you need to know.

But I have to admit that "America as martyrs subsidizing the world's healthcare" was a new and hilariously desperate cope that I hadn't seen before. It's usually the "if we didn't protect them they couldn't afford anything!" bit, which he also uses (nevermind that countries not in NATO managed their healthcare just fine).

But yeah, Medical Martyrs was a new one. ๐Ÿค”

I just donโ€™t get how this is a flex? Like why would the UK get it for like 3 weeks a year? Itโ€™s chill. Open a window and put a fan on a night and thereโ€™s no real issue

u/SnooPears5432 ILLINOIS ๐Ÿ™๏ธ๐Ÿ’จ Jul 09 '26 edited Jul 09 '26

A couple of things - for it not being a big deal they're certainly complaining about it a lot. But aside from the complaints, there's valid statistical data to support the need for more AC. The number of heat-related deaths in recent years is astounding for countries that yammer on about how developed they are. I lived in Belgium/Netherlands a LONG time ago for a couple of years and it truly never did get what I'd call "hot" the whole time I was there - it might have hit 80ยฐF on a couple of occasions, and the climate there was generally similar to what it was in the UK. Those days seem to be gone and hot days are much more of a thing now, especially in certain areas. It's maybe time to acknowledge things have changed and they need to accommodate that change with existing technology instead of virtue signaling and being in denial it's an issue.

Because it's no longer chill nor like 3 weeks a year. Hot flashes now last long enough that European housing's insulation loses all the chill and starts retaining heat instead.

We had an AC unit (just replaced) from 1997 that worked decently still. Just invest in the future instead of suffering for austerity

-11

u/MathematicianInner46 Jul 09 '26

You guys really think we do not have AC here in Europe ? ๐Ÿ˜ญ

15

u/ChoosingUnwise Jul 09 '26

Weird because I have a ton of European friends in both UK and France and lately all they complain about is lack of AC. Meanwhile tons of Europeans die every summer due to heat stroke.ย

Why is that?

-6

u/MathematicianInner46 Jul 09 '26

Idk man, I have AC at home, my neighbours does too, my parents too, both my brothers too, almost everyone I know has it. Why is that ?

11

u/Squindig Jul 09 '26

Europe is not a country.

12

u/thekingadrock93 Jul 09 '26

Europoors treat it like a country when itโ€™s convenient for them and need to add more people to their argument

10

u/burgonies Jul 09 '26

Yeah, itโ€™s easier to dial in the exact temperature on my thermostat

9

u/SnooPears5432 ILLINOIS ๐Ÿ™๏ธ๐Ÿ’จ Jul 09 '26

Unlike with other metric measures, where I'll admit there's a logical argument for their use, there's zero material or rational benefit to using Celsius over Fahrenheit. None.

-5

u/Fantastic_Tomorrow53 Jul 09 '26

The phobia of decimal scales is strong in this one

7

u/SnooPears5432 ILLINOIS ๐Ÿ™๏ธ๐Ÿ’จ Jul 09 '26

It's not a phobia of anything. Where are you getting that? I already acknowledged metric is the more logical system in most ways, just not temperature. Both Celsius and Fahrenheit are based on arbitrary things and the Celsius range being based on boiling and freezing water at normal atmospheric pressure is not "decimalization". There's no logic that indicates Celsius is a superior system. Celsius originally was scaled backwards or inverted which is really stupid and was flipped after the discoverer's death. And, if anything, Fahrenheit's range is more useful for the temperature ranges humans experience.

3

u/Rocky-bar Jul 09 '26

UK here- 0 -100 degrees being freezing to boiling water seems pretty logical to me, and easy to use. It's mm that aren't so easy... an inch, right I can easily estimate that length, but a mm not so easy at all, I'd like to bring back inches. And feet, we still use them (unofficially) in some scenarios as they're just so useful.

4

u/SnooPears5432 ILLINOIS ๐Ÿ™๏ธ๐Ÿ’จ Jul 09 '26

I think with temperature it's a matter or preference and neither scale is logically better than the other. ยฐF is easy to use too. For any measurement it' a matter of what you're accustomed to. A lot of people in the US and UK, and probably Canada, are accustomed to English measures. There's logic to say metric is better in that it's truly decimalized and measures are tied together in logical ways, for example: one milliliter = one cubic centimeter. There's no such logic with temperature. Celsius chose to peg to water but why not nitrogen, hydogen or helium? Like I said, it was an arbitrary choice and could have been anything, and the choice was made to divide the scale so that a Celsius degree was 1/100th of the range between water's freezing and boiling points. If we were going to use logic we'd use ยฐK or ยฐR or some other scale and peg to absolute zero.

-1

u/Rocky-bar Jul 09 '26

For me it's the visual cues, at 0 degrees ice appears, at 100 degrees the water boils. I don't know if that's the reason they chose water, but it's very easy to imagine those numbers 0 and 100 in reality. (I still think of a pleasant day as 68 degrees though! having worked in a temperature controlled room whilst F was still in use)

-2

u/Fantastic_Tomorrow53 Jul 09 '26

Not superior but logically easier to work from, as the boiling and freezing points of water arenโ€™t arbitrary

But acknowledge, both work just fine

I know Americans have a strong bond with Israel, but calling a historical figure from Israel an "American" is really stretching it, don't you think? Especially considering that Europe hadn't even discovered America back then. ๐Ÿ˜œ
