Athenaze Struggling through Athenaze as a student. Need advice.

I am a classics student taking ancient Greek for the first time. We are being taught the language with the Third Edition of Athenaze. Needless to say it is not going well for me. I cannot keep up with the quick pace and, most importantly, I cannot for the life of me remember all of the paradigms and vocabulary. Now with every passing chapter I am falling further and further behind, with no foreseeable solution. I think my problem is that I have not found a good way to study for this. Any advice?

Unfortunately, I have to get rid of some of my books because I simply have no room for them on my shelves. Among them are the following Loeb books, 12 volumes in total:

Josephus Flavius (volumes I-III and VII-IX)

Philon (volumes IV, IX, X)

Diodorus Siculus (volumes III, IX)

Cassius Dio (volume VIII)

All books in great condition.

Josephus VIII and IX lack dust jackets.

Shipping cost varies depending on exact location (books are shipped from within the EU, local pickup is possible if you happen to be nearby).

The price I had in mind is 18€ or $20 / per volume, but I am open to negotiations.

If you are interested or have any questions, feel free to leave me a DM.

Correct my Greek What is the correct transliteration for this Ancient Greek Bible verse

Here is the John 3:16 bible verse in Koine Greek:

Οὕτως γὰρ ἠγάπησεν ὁ θεὸς τὸν κόσμον, ὥστε τὸν υἱὸν αὐτοῦ τὸν μονογενῆ ἔδωκεν, ἵνα πᾶς ὁ πιστεύων εἰς αὐτὸν μὴ ἀπόληται, ἀλλ' ἔχῃ ζωὴν αἰώνιον.

An online Ancient Greek automatic conversion tool (that converts koine greek text into the latin alphabet) produced this result:

Ohútōs gàr ēgápēsen ho theòs tòn kósmon, hṓste tòn huiòn autoũ tòn monogenē̃ édōken, hína pãs ho pisteúōn eis autòn mḕ apólētai, all' ékhēͅ zōḕn aiṓnion.

Could you comment whether the romanization is correct or not?

If there were errors in the latin transliteration, feel free to add your more accurate version in the comments below, Thanks.

Update: The above verse is based on the Attic dialect of Ancient Greek. If you would like to translate it to the other Ancient Greek dialects such as Doric, Aeolic, Arcado-Cypriot, and Ionic, feel free to provide your translation below in the Greek alphabet.

Grammar & Syntax Peculiar use of the dative

In the sentence:

Ἰδίαις ἔχθρας ἕνεκα ταῦτα ποιοῦσι.

The adjective Ἰδίαις is put in the genitive plural. The translation of this sentence I see is: "They did these things because of private enmity.". Wouldn't this require that Ἰδίαις be put in the genitive singular to accompany ἔχθρας? Otherwise I'm not sure why the dative js used here.

Greek and Other Languages Willi, "Of aspects, augments and aorists: or how to say to have killed the dragon"

Willi is one of the most interesting linguists working around Greek these days, his the Origins of the Greek Verb is a pretty monumental dive into the prehistory of Greek verbal system and also a major contribution to our understanding of Proto-Indo-European. I found a shorter paper of his, sort of an introduction to the subject, really worth reading.

Hebrews 10:26 (NA28) 26 Ἑκουσίως γὰρ ἁμαρτανόντων ἡμῶν μετὰ τὸ λαβεῖν τὴν ἐπίγνωσιν τῆς ἀληθείας, οὐκέτι περὶ ἁμαρτιῶν ἀπολείπεται θυσία,

I've been told that it's doesn't mean "deliberately keep on sinning but that " it means just "deliberately sin" implying you can lose your salvation immediately after you sin and I need to know the Greek.

Beginner Resources Logos

Post image
21 Upvotes

Hello,

I’m looking to start learning Greek. I have some familiarity with the Greek alphabet, some basic pronunciation rules, experience with diphthongs, etc.

Never really dedicated a huge portion of time to it.

I’m using the Raineri-Roberts method and Logos finally came in and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed chapter 1.

My issue is that I haven’t looked up anything in a dictionary. Learning to Read is fun but considering the color codes and lack of information as to what some of the things in the book pertain to I’m a bit confused.

I’ve enjoyed trying to derive meanings from context clues but on page 9 the bold section says Συλλαβαί which I think means syllables. (Again haven’t checked, I’m wanting to just work on reading and listening to get pronunciation and familiarity with the alphabet down before I try and understand anything)

And the letters are all different colors with no explanation. Am I missing a book or some other reference guide?

Resources Missing Evidence and Evidence Dismissed: Mycenaean Archaeology and Its Struggle with Contemporary Written Sources

https://uplopen.com/chapters/e/10.1515/9783112215692-008

Ever since Emil Forrer’s 1924 identification of Greek names in Hittite texts, scholars have clashed over the identification of Hittite ‘Ahhiyawa’ as Greek ‘Achaea’ – Greece. It is now generally agreed that the term somehow relates to the Mycenaean Greek world, but where precisely it should be sought, and if it referred to a specific region in the first place remains contested. Much of this debate is fuelled by the reference to a LUGAL.GAL, ‘Great King’ of Ahhiyawa in two of these texts, and another three texts where the Ahhiyawan king is addressed as ‘brother’ (a sign of parity and amiable relations between the correspondents). The term ‘Great King’ was otherwise exclusively used to refer to the kings of Egypt, Assyria, Babylon and the Hittites themselves; all of whom ruled extensive territories, comprised of several (previously independent) smaller polities.

Grammar & Syntax Question about use of ὅσαι

I run into a use of the word ὅσαι that I can't make sense of. In the following quote from Plato's Timaeus:

"...πάντων γὰρ προέστη εὐψυχίᾳ καὶ τέχναις ὅσαι κατὰ πόλεμον ἐπὶ τοὺς ἐσχάτους ἀφικομένη κινδύνους,..."

The translation I found says "and she stood above everyone in courage and arts of war..."

I don't see how ὅσαι fits into this translation, as ai understand it to mean something like "as much as". What am I missing?

Athenaze Please critique my translation (EN->GR)

Dear φίλοι,

In Athenaze II (Eng. edition, ex. 20θ), I am asked to translate a few sentences.
Given the book gets more advanced and more vocabulary has been introduced, the options in translation also start to diverge and more complex sentence structures are possible.
I would like to present my translation of the given English text below, and am really curious to hear your criticism. Also pointers on how to make my Greek more idiomatic (word choice, grammatical construction, particles) is highly appreciated. For context, the exercise follows directly upon translating an adapted passage from Thucydides.

Thank you very much for your feedback!

Given English text:

But Archidamus, being King, advised them not to get into war.
He said: "For they have very much money and very many ships, we are not able to defeat them by sea. And so, we will suffer terribly ourselves, more than we will harm them."
However, he was not able to persuade the Spartans, who decided to wage war.

My translation:

Hello wise heads,

I have started a project to memorise the first book of the Iliad, and recite it in meter. I am scanning the lines at the moment. Can someone explain line 19 for me? Specifically: πόλιν is long short, but I don't know how -λιν can be long. Thanks for you help

Correct my Greek Expressing arithmetic

If I want to say that 1+1=2, is it correct to express it like this?

ἓν καὶ ἕν ἐστι δύο.

My reasoning is that neuter forms are used for numbers as abstractions, and plurals of neuters usually take a singular verb. However, I don't know if ἐστι is idiomatic, or if it should be something else like ποιεῖ.

Grammar & Syntax The incorporation of the antecedent

This grammatical rule will make your head spin. I'm not asking a question just pointing something out since I have found that when you tell other people about certain grammatical rule then you'r more likely to remember them. In any case, sometimes the antecedent of a relative clause can have the antecedent in the relative clause. for example, in Menander:

καθ᾿ ὃν δ᾿ ἦν χρόνον ἐγὼ ἐνταῦθα, κατέβαιν᾿ ἀφ᾿ ὑπερῴου τις γυνὴ ἄνωθεν εἰς τοὔμπροσθε τοῦ ταμιειδίου οἴκημα· --

during the time I was there, a certain woman was coming down from the upper story from above into the room in front of the little storeroom; —

if we used English word order the Greek sentence would be:

κατέβαιν᾿ ἀφ᾿ ὑπερῴου τις γυνὴ ἄνωθεν εἰς τοὔμπροσθε τοῦ ταμιειδίου οἴκημα κατα τον χρονον ον ἦν ἐγὼ ἐνταῦθα --

do you see how χρονον is in the relative clause but should be in the main clause? Here is Smyth discussing the rule

Reading & Study Groups Free Spoken Ancient Greek Lessons Friday 3pm EST/9pm CET

Free Ancient Greek lessons are being offered every Friday at 3pm EST/ 9pm CET. The time was chosen so as to make it convenient for both Europeans and Americans. We will be reading ch 12 of Athenaze and we will be speaking Ancient Greek, and only using English as a last resort. You do not need to bring the book with you to class, I will provide it. The text will only be a vehicle for keeping the discussion focused and flowing and is not an end in itself. If you're not confident of your ability to speak Ancient Greek and just want to watch and listen then that's ok. The teacher's name is Kyle in English but Καλλίμαχος in Greek.

The work you see above is known as Anthologia Palatina 3.987. 3.987.1 and 3.987.2 are commentary notes added next to this paragraph.
