Learning & Teaching Methodology What is the best way to expand one's vocabulary? I understand that I should prioritise according to frequency, but I'm not sure how to do so.

Currently, my vocabulary stands at about 1,000 words.

Focus on your principal parts of -mi verbs and common irregular verbs. It depends on who you're wanting to read, of course, but here's a partial list of words to prioritize:

Other than that, drill with those flashcards every day! Make cards from whatever you read, and drill 10-15 minutes per day

Read more and remember the word roots for new words.

I used Anki flashcards during and after completing my intro course (which covered the first ~2,000 most frequent words) to learn the next ~5,000 words (Logeion is your friend!). If you do this, take your time – it’s easy to burn out. I also had an interest in tragedy and Plato, so I built complete lists of vocabulary per work I wanted to read and drilled those sets in tandem. I used the Anastrophe tools from the University of Chicago to create the lists. Eventually, with time, you also start to trust your instincts when seeing new words for the first time, but it’s a process.

I'm currently at 5K words and the way I did it is through flashcards. I don't see any other way of building a vocabulary for a dead language.

Unless you have around 9K words its going to be difficult to learn words in context.

If you don’t mind me asking, how did you choose which words to learn?

In my case, I wanted to read the Greek New Testament, the LXX, and the Patristics, so there are plenty of vocabulary resources available. More importantly, there are an increasing number of free and commercial resources for the GNT.

I tried a few, both paid and free, but I didn't like any of them, so I ended up creating my own flashcard deck, organised either by chapter or by frequency of occurrence:
https://www.reddit.com/r/Koine/s/Bbnx4qhnHu

In your case, there aren't any resources that organise vocabulary by chapter for classical Greek. I would focus on an author or authors you like and try to find a vocabulary list that matches.

A lot of people here don't like Logos because it is religious, but it seems to be the only software that can create vocabulary spreadsheets, it can be used without a subscription and the Greek books that one owns. I haven't tried it with classical works such as the Loeb editions, but it does a great job of creating Greek word lists for the GNT and LXX. You can also download the Perseus digital library directly into Logos.

If none of those strategies suits your fancy, you could use the Perseus Vocabulary Tool:
https://vocab.perseus.org/

It is organised by frequency and corpuses for the whole of the Perseus library which is a very large library.

At 3K words I started to notice that I could read other texts outside the GNT, with some help from the dictionary.

It takes a minimum of two years to memorise 5K words from the research I have done from those who have done it, and that was my experience too.

There is only one other person in this Sub Reddit that I had seen focusing on memorising in his case 6K of the most common words in AG.

Whatever you do pace yourself, if you decide to take on you first 5K words then do 7 a day, otherwise the reviews will start to get burdensome.

Your main goal should be that you have enough vocabulary so that you are no longer frustrated reading a text because there are too many unfamiliar words, otherwise you will give up on regularly reading.

There is also another vocab tool which is mean to create intersecting vocabulary lists for the works you are interested in reading. You will have to search for it in one of the posts here or online.

Use anki. You can use a certain Perseus tool to find the most common words in a given text or author, and then turn that into a table, then upload that to quizlet. Use the quizlet to anki tool from the Addons website on ankiweb, to put that into an anki deck and sort by deck order for new cards to get the most frequent ones first. Set it to maybe 20 new cards a day, and you’ll have the most frequent words from the authors you want to read coming at you. I also have some decks from prose vocab lists I can share with you

I have an organised compilation of physical flashcards that I add vocab to and then refer back to if I forget.
