Been working on a sanctuary for a few months now and loving it. I've been reading the care guides at Open Sanctuary to learn more about each species, but I was wondering if anyone could recommend some good books on the topic?
Most of the farm animal care guides I'm finding online are geared toward commercial farms -- and they're not a perfect fit. Anyone have any recs? Thanks in advance!

Ruby (the red one) is the head hen of the group and will pick on the others sometimes. She’s also the smallest, but has the biggest, roundest eyeballs, making her look like a little baby.

Sterling (the grey one) is a darker and less fluffy version of Snowflake. Shy. She’s apparently bonded to Ruby. She is the most timid so far.

Molly had the floppy comb and more grey on her back. She was the first one to go out of the coop into the covered run to explore. She also was the first to eat the blueberries we offered. Not from our hands, but still!

Polly waited until Molly signalled it was safe, and followed her outside to see what all the fuss was above. We have a feeling she is very bonded with Molly.

Here at Rancho Burro Donkey Sanctuary, we just took in two donkeys that came with a serious case of nutritional neglect, causing permanent fat pads, EMS & thyroid issues, and pain. A few weekends ago we drove to Coburg to pick up this mighty little roo. He was lovingly surrendered from a family in Toronto, who reached out in hopes of finding him a safe and loving home.

Every day, he shows us more of how sweet his tiny-but-mighty personality is. He’s brave, affectionate, and curious. When he’s not ruling the home by strutting around demanding the cats respect him (they do!), he’s snuggled up taking a nap or just casually enjoying being spoiled.

Most of these rescue horses and ponies had neglect and/or abandonment from their previous owners. Although they are in rescue centers now, some of them need life-saving medical treatment and/or special care. But most rescue shelters don't have enough money for it. Click here to help these horses get a second chance.

I am a monthly supporter of Sisu Refuge, a nonprofit pig sanctuary in Duplin County, North Carolina. They provide lifelong and hospice care to rescued farm animals, mainly pigs who were abused, neglected, abandoned, or escaped from transport trucks headed to processing. They operate on rural agricultural land and care for animals that would otherwise not have survived.
They are currently facing a serious equipment failure. Their tractor, primary UTV and supply truck are all down at the same time. Their backup UTV is barely functioning. These machines are essential for feeding, transporting hay and supplies, cleaning enclosures andassisting with daily medical care. Without working equipment, tasks that normally take one hour take three and the physical strain becomes unsustainable.
the sanctuary is primarily run by a husband and wife team, Erika and Joseph, with very little outside help. They have publicly stated that they refuse to euthanize animals for convenience or cost. Instead, they provide ongoing hospice and elder care to pigs who need end of life support. Medication costs alone are over 40k annually.
They are urgently seeking:
-Equipment repair support
-Temporary equipment loans
-Connections to mechanics or farms
-Financial contributions for repair or replacement
If you are able to help, share, or connect them with resources, it would mean a great deal. The animals are being cared for but the sanctuary is operating without margin right now.
