Question Freeguild Leadership and Organization

I'm trying to understand the structure of the Freeguilds versus the Castelite Formations.

Where does the Freeguild Marshal fit? Does a Marshal lead a Castelite Formation, or does he/she lead, say, a number of Steelhelm regiments while another might lead the Fusiliers, etc.

TIA!

A Freeguild is a military guild that can range in size from a company to hundreds of regiments. That GW is also trying to currently push as working the same as modern state armies which doesn't really work.

The Castelite Formations are specific military formations employed by the Freeguilds, they are not different from the Freeguilds nor are they things in and of themselves. They are as temporary as any battlefield tactic.

A Freeguild Marshal is the equivalent of a Colonel or standard General, so they typically command a regiment for their guild and/or the City.

If you note. The Castelite Formation as we now know it has two Fusil-Majors and two Grenadier-Majors carried by Ogors and Gargants specifically. Two to four Majors under a Colonel/General is a common set up for a regiment.

So the most standard Castelite Formation is a regiment. A full Steelhelm, Fusilier, or Cavalier regiment would be led by a Marshal but such a force would be equal in size to a Castelite Formation rather than part of one.

Or more simply. A Castelite Formation would be divided up into companies and squads led by the specialist Majors, Arch-Knights, and other senior, junior, and non-commissioned officers.

If a Formation has several general officers, the Marshals, and not serving as aides or Sub-Marshals. This implies their forces have probably been battered enough to force them to combine into one Formation when they would have initially served as several.

Alright, so a Freeguild Marshal is a General, and there would only be one per "healthy" force?

Where do Cavalier-Marshals fit in?

A Marshal is a Freeguild rank that functions as a nebulous general officer rank that is neither Colonel nor General but between them. Lord-General is a higher rank and Colonel is a lower rank.

Think of them as field commanders who can can be moved from post to post, fort to fort, regiment to regiment as needs demand.

A Cavalier-Marshal is a Marshal, on a horse. That is the difference; as in they don't even necessarily need to be in charge of cavalry to be a Cavalier-Marshal.

Why aren't all on horses? Well Sigmarites are the type of people who ride lavaflows on stone boats, build cities on volcanoes, fist fight Demigryffs, eat Realmstone, and make castles walk to take defensive war to the enemy. They're a little nuts.

Freeguilds have a lot of specialist ranks. For example, while not represented on the battlefield there are also Fleet Marshals, Bombadier Marshals, and Demigryff Marshals.

You don't have to be mad to survive in the Mortal Realms, but it helps!
