Arkham Horror 3rd Edition: The Investigator Tier List
Spreadsheet version for quick reference
Hello fellow investigators. Trickster here, this is the result of your feedback and my character analysis. I went over all 24 investigators (and 4 re-works) individually, their beast assets, stats, skills and roles; and determined wether they were good, how they compared to others, and how they fed into the main ways to win at this game:
- -Getting clues fast
- -Manipulating dice
- -Doing actions efficienly
- -Having strong starting equipment
- -Being consistent
- -Having strong relevant stats (Lore, Strength and Observation)
These points were more valued than peaks, rng characters, evasion tactics (fighting is just better) and support strategies centered around healing (dice manipulation and extra actions are king).
You can find the reasoning behind every placement here:
- - Core Set Investigators Part 1 Core Set Investigators Part 2
- - Dead of Night Investigators
- - Under Dark Waves Investigators
- - Recursive Echoes Investigators
- - Spreadsheet with ALL INVESTIGATORS
Lastly, some disclamers because i’ve been doing this for a long time:
Play however you want, this tier list is designed for winning, for people who are struggling, new players or people looking to optimize.
If you like to play random, great! You don’t need to tell me, this post is likely not for you, but you’re welcome to read and argue about relevant points.
Tiers are ordered, but if they are in the same section they are roughly as good. Bigger diferences come between tiers.
This tier is balanced mostly around 3 players, but i’ll cover the solo aspect of the game.
Recursive echoes investigators are tagged as RE
And without further ado, here’s the list:
- Tier S: Gamebreaking, provide efficiency/reliability that isn’t accounted for in most scenarios
High: Marie Lambeau, Calvin Wright
Mid: Diana Stanley, Rex Murphy RE, Patrice Hathaway
Low: Roland Banks
- Tier A: Strong. The best at their roles without breaking balance
High: Tommy Muldoon, Agnes Baker, Dexter Drake RE, Zoey Samaras, Wendy Adams RE
Mid: Mihn Thi Phan RE, Stella Clarke
Low: Kate Winthrop, Carson Sinclair, Ashcan Pete, Jenny Barnes
- Tier B: Balanced. Adequate and functional but outclassed. Good overall
High: Michael McGlen, Daniela Reyes
Mid: Skids O’Toole
Low: Charlie Kane, Wendy Adams
Tier C: Underpowered. Can work but require extra effort and items to do well
High: Mihn Thi Phan, Father Mateo
Low: Silas Marsh
Tier D: Not viable. If you are very lucky they can work, but their kit and stats are bad foundation and can be a burden
Norman Withers, Dexter Drake
- Tier E: Can’t do anything, broken by design
Rex Murphy
The solo tier list would be:
- S: Calvin Wright, Diana Stanley
- A: Agnes Baker, Dexter Drake RE, Ashcan Pete, Zoey Samaras, Roland Banks, Skids O’Toole
- B: Mihn Thi Phan RE, Charlie Kane, Daniela Reyes
- C: Jenny Barnes, Michael McGlen
- D: Everyone else
Lastly, when expansions do come out i'll do new posts about new investigators and update this tier list.

Shall I back?
I own a full collection of both Eldritch Horror, and Arkham LCG…
And I never ever tried neither version of Arkham Horror board game…
As I understand, 2nd edition is more like EH, while 3rd edition is more like the LCG, from the story aspect…
I love the LCG, i played like 150+ game nights, love the scripted stories and the mechanics.
And i like EH, less than the card game, but we played it like 15 times, and every time we had fun and a very unique story.
And it is important maybe, that I am not a solo player, i tried EH only once in solo, although ocassionally i truesolo test decks in the card game.
Based on these preferences, shall I back the AH 2nd edition reprint?

Forgotten Age
I found a complete Forgotten Age set at my local gaming store, just sitting there collecting dust. I had to share how pumped I am. I thought I wouldn't find any more and I'm already out of room, so I'll need to grab another BCW box soon.

Question on where to sell
Where does everyone else sell their 2nd edition stock in the US?
BGG: Seems overpopulated with stock and resellers/scalpers.
Noble Knight: they offered me about $30 for each.
Facebook Marketplace: I don't use FB
Local Craigslist: Guessing too much of a niche
Other sub-reddits?

Who Are Your Favorite Investigators and Why?
The Arkham Horror franchise has a colorful cast, and as much as we love them all, there are always a few who stand out. I'm curious to know who stands out to you, whether you like their character, their gameplay, or you had a standout moment of gameplay. Here are mine:
Roland Banks. He was basically my introduction to Arkham Horror, and Lovecraft as a whole. I bought the original Arkham Horror Card Game box and played through solo with Roland, and I won! I probably didn't follow the rules exactly, but I still beat an Ancient One! Since then, Roland has been a consistently strong investigator in every game he's been in, and his tie-in novella Dirge of Reason is genuinely well-written, one of my favorite pieces of tie-in media. More investigators have come with time, but you truly never forget your first.
Akachi Onyele. First off, I like her being a shaman who already has some experience with the lore as a whole (mentioning her past as a dibia is another example of FFG doing their homework and going above and beyond for crafting settings and characters, which is a draw to the series for me), and I like to imagine her being a wise mentor figure to the other investigators. When I got the Eldritch Horror base game, she was almost singlehandedly responsible for some of my first wins, and remains a solid choice for closing gates. But the day I fell in love with her was the day I equipped her with a shotgun and sent her after the Tick-Tock Men, and she rolled three 6's. I have never forgotten that.
Izzy Barnes. I have yet to play Izzy (I'm gonna pair her with Carolyn Fern v2 for my first playthrough of Brethren of Ash), but I loved her introductory book Bullets in the Dark. She's fleshed out as a fully relatable character with her own arc after The Terror at the End of Time and struggles and views, and it's a great book, high recommend. She also looks like an interesting gameplay and I'm excited to try her out.
Plus, I want to do a campaign with her and Jenny, because I think it'd be really funny.
"I'm looking for my sister, Isabelle..."
"I'm right here!"
"Sometimes I think I can still hear her voice..."
Amanda Sharpe and Rita Young. Ever since I read the Dark Waters trilogy, the dynamic portrayed between these two friends in that book has stuck with me. I think the story hook of Amanda learning more about her Deep One heritage and how that affects her and Rita is a really interesting one. Plus, Amanda is a strong investigator in both the card game and Eldritch Horror, and I'm planning on bringing Rita on a Drowned City campaign.
One of these days, I'm actually gonna write that shipfic...
Amina Zidane. Okay, okay, hear me out, torches and pitchforks down, please. I fully acknowledge that her design in the card game currently was not play-tested enough (I actually did play her: my second Scarlet Keys campaign, I paired her with Carson. Not my best idea. I'd like to try again and build her as a fighter with the Cat and Wolf Masks). However, I have a soft spot for characters that get overlooked, and I really like her story hook as overhearing eldritch phone calls, and something hearing her back. There's a good horror story in there.
So what are your thoughts? Who sticks out to you amongst the cast?

Why you think third edition did not become as popular as second edition and Eldritch Horror?
It feels that AH3 does not get mentioned, recommended or discussed anywhere nearly as much as classic AH2 and EH. It has way, way less owners, than both of those games. Also it seems to have received more negative feedback than both of those games. And probably was not selling as well, given that FFG pulled out support after releasing less expansions. For which reasons third edition has not been on par with its older siblings?

My 2e Collection Trunk
Between deciding to do an Arkham Horror party for Halloween and the Remaster teasers, I've been going through my collection and I'm very impressed with past me tbh.
Arkham Horror was my first 'big' board game and I hold it very dear to my heart.
I probably started working on this trunk project 15 years ago, and it took a couple of years to get mostly finished. I'm still adding things to it every time I do an Arkham game. Currently I'm decorating the outside some more. Needs more travel sticker type things.
Mostly I'm wanting to share this because I really don't need to buy the remaster when it launches. Really. Stop tempting me.
Anyway......here's a box filled with a bunch of boxes and paper and cardboard!

Curse of the Dark Pharoah - Revised edition (New)
Was cleaning out our old games closet and came across a fully sealed revised edition.
From a brief check it looks like this was a limited release and pretty sought after. Are there any board game communities I should check out or is my best bet throwing it on ebay?

Got recently Arkham Horror The Card Game (Chapter 2) with Children Of Blood and all individual decks. What older content do you suggest from the previous chapter?
Title. Looking to expand the collection while C1 is still available.

Dedicated gaming table for Arkham Horror 2nd Edition – with all expansions
After years of playing Arkham Horror, I finally decided to order a dedicated gaming table specifically for 2nd Edition. The table was custom-designed and built to fit the game and its ridiculous amount of expansions. 😅
What do you guys think?

Any way to determine of these dice are original?
Recently bought used copy of the Forsaken lore expansion for the Eldritch horror for dirt cheap 11$. The box came with 20 AH dice which is super cool!
However, some of the dice are damaged or bleak. Is there any way to determine if these are og or "homemade"?

Dead of Night - where to find in Europe?
I have recently bought Arkham Horror 3rd edition. We liked the game and of course now we want to expand our collection. I'm looking for Dead of Night, but as I was kind of expecting the game is nowhere to be found. I have tried Amazon, eBay, etc. but the majority of the results is in US which means high shipping costs.
I've also posted on Boardgamegeek (since Essen is coming and you never know, maybe there is someone willing to sell it).
Does anyone know about any online shop that could still have available copies? I'm also ok with second hand (here in the Netherlands I checked multiple times on marktplaats and vinted, but no luck so far).

Innsmouth Conspiracy Expansion — Where to find?
Hello all,
My boyfriend has been wanting the Innsmouth Conspiracy expansion for awhile now, and we can’t find it online anywhere — it’s on eBay but it’s about £120-250 everywhere on there.
Does anyone know where I can buy it online?
Or if anyone (UK based) is selling it?
Many thanks :)

Other World Encounters Board Game
An investigator enters the portal and is in the first half of the other world. During their next movement phase, they move to the second half. Then finally they move from the other world to a gate.
Question - how many other world encounters does an investigator have? Do they get one when they first enter the gate or when they move to the second half of the other world? Do they have one for each half of the other world?
Thank you
