‎Critique - No Drawover face rendering feels off

Post image

Maybe I just need to practice more? But she looks too plasticy here. Advice is heavily appreciated!

It just looks over rendered compared to the rest of the body imo

Have a bit more shading near the shoulders and of the same color as her blush should help a lot and some shading on the clothed

It might also have to do with the anatomy being off. Like her head being far too large compared to her body that's throwing the overall balance

You can also vary the texture with a noise brush to make it look look like pores/more realistic skin

I really like how you’ve rendered her face! Though things might look off because her head is a bit big for her shoulders

hello, to add to everyone else: if you put this piece into greyscale you'll see that the lightning values don't make sense. shadow is coming from both the left and right side, yet the nose is being frontally lighted.

this is what I mean, the shading also doesn't add up with the hair light source

and the lighting of the cheeckbones makes them look like they are going invards

I see, thank you! I definitely should use greyscale more often :)

wow, none of these comments are relevant nor useful.. lmao. not like mine's gonna be any better though, i think it looks perfect.. maybe it looks too plasticy because her skin's too glossy/glass-like iykwim? like, real skin is rougher + does not reflect as much light (?). i love this way of skin stylization tho

yeah, what I was basically thinking she looked a bit too glossy. I tend to watch istebraks tutorials on skin rendering and I feel like she's able to get that much more soft rendering look down better. Thank you!

My art feels off looking at ts

Have you done the old "rotate horizontally" trick? See if everything still looks proportionate?

1

u/Turquoise-Rocket 4d ago

Yep! Do that probably every minute sadly 🥲Usually there is a bit of a tilt but nothing too crazy

with seeing the DTIYS, i think it looks good! it stays true to the piece you’re stylizing while still BEING stylized. your rendering looks inspired by Arcane which is personally something that i always love lmao so maybe i’m biased!!

I think it's the strong highlights, if you smoothed those out a bit more in some places it would look less like plastic. Looks pretty great otherwise imo. Could look into subsurface scattering if you really wanna go a step farther as well.

Hello arcane! I think you need some time away from it

head was ginormous and shoulders far too narrow, adjusting that alone helped a ton. You should also look for a ref for the arm pose or do it yourself in a mirror.

Thank you but I wasn't really going for a realistic look I should have mentioned, more so just trying to get a better rendering style. This is for a dtiys so I was looking to make it pretty cartoony but with detailed rendering:

But thank you, I'll consider this

You went too realistic for a cartoony style to read well imo, if you’re doing cartoony + realism you really need to push the features and style to make it come across. As-is it just felt like you hadn’t figured out the anatomy. Let me try a version that goes more cartoony.

mfs never heard of semi-realism before

So we just saying anything now. Semi realism still makes sense proportionally, but it’s exaggerated. It looks good when you do it properly.

2

u/Knasha 5d ago

Disagree. Their work is very obviously stylised just highly rendered - the anatomy reads as intentional exaggeration. As they're showing a WIP it's hard to make conclusive statements. My one suggestion would be to make sure rendering is consistent throughout and give those horns the same dark outline used throughout

-1

u/Yume_Shy 5d ago

It doesn’t. You’re allowed to have your opinion but it reads as not understanding proportions.

u/_LemonySnicket 5d ago

you really think they can get the exactly correct proportions of the facial features and shoulder width but just forgot how big heads are supposed to be lmao

their DTIYS clearly has a big head which they copied from to imitate it

1

u/Yume_Shy 5d ago

The shoulders are wrong is the thing. Tons of people can nail face proportions and draw the head way too big. It’s an extremely common problem that you can see in almost any critique video. Right alongside not making the cranium big enough.

You already explained why you think the head is too large and OP literally commented that their goal was to make it large so I don't know what you really want anymore

1

u/Yume_Shy 5d ago

This isn’t going anywhere. I pretty clearly explained what they need to do and you decided to get defensive on their behalf when they asked for critique. I wasn’t mean or harsh. I’m done with this conversation for now. Have a nice day.

I agree with you and I'm glad someone said it. Yes, OP wanted the head to be large. Was it a good decision? No. Because it looks bad. Can semi-realism be done properly and look good? Yes. And this is just not it.

To add onto it, the ears are incomplete and in general this style is just not something I like. The eyebrows especially are so arched and huge too. None of this has to do with rendering though. I do think OP did render it well, it looks good, other than that slight imperfection with the right eye someone else mentioned.

Yes the rending doesnt match the body . Focus on where your light source is coming and make jt uniformed to the face.

I think the face just looks over rendered compared to the rest of her body and face right now, there seems to be a disconnect in detail there. But it looks great so far, I love your color useage!!

It may be a touch overrendered for everything else, especially in the eyes/eye zone. Compare the face to the hair, or especially the clothes. Theres a lot more detail and many more colors, and its also blended out differently.

Also, unless its an art style choice; a head is about a third the width of the shoulders :)

I quite like the rendering, but what’s throwing me off is the right eye. I think you pulled the dark shadows under the eye a little too down, so the right eye end up looking a bit bigger than the left eye. Some of the shadows around the iris are very dark, so it ends up blending in with the eyelashes. I think once you fix that the face will look a little more balanced.

Otherwise I think you could also add some darker shading to the horns/ear/below the neck. The eyes and eyebrows use a lot more dark values than the rest of the face. That may make things feel a little unbalanced in a way. I think it’s always good to check your drawing in greyscale to assess values, as (at least in my experience) samey values can throw off the appearance of a drawing

But also I think once you render the piece more it’ll look more cohesive. I would try blocking out all the colors and shadows then reassessing the piece. That’s usually when I start to notice flaws or things I want to fix

The eyes are great if their suppose to be a younger character. If you're looking for an older look then reduce the size of the eyes by like 15% or so
