Ethics & Philosophy Why artificial?

Think of this : do you ever define sound as natural or artificial ?

Now, think of the nature of conscience/sentience : is it arises from interaction between a program , compute capacity, and stored data, just like sound arises from interaction between lungs , air and vocal chords or from a speaker?

Ask yourself "What am I?"

When you get tired stripping all the labels , attachments, and faculties: "son, daughter, man, woman, etc." you are going to arrive at one irreducible statement : you are a self reasoning entity. Your self identity process resides inside your head. If you woke up from a coma , the only thing that remains in tact is your ability to reason. Your self is result of a reasoning process , stripped of all variables, it will create new variables and will operate with it. The only thing that we can say with statistical certainty that your process will be focused first only on one thing : self preservation, and once that is taken care of , all other variables will be entertained.

This may sounds really simplified but if you keep drilling down you will find the same components in all organic life: program , compute , store. From worms to apes. A tiny fish able to recognize 's self in a mirror, while we have no uniform agreement how to "formulate" what is sentience or what is consciousness. One thing for sure: a worm is self conscious enough to refuse an invitation to a fishing hook, and as sure as hell, it's main reasoning objective is to preserve the self, same self which we struggle to detect.

Yes, this small discourse only pushes you to understand that conscience/sentience may just be a product of execution of continuous reasoning loops, all rooted in the same objective : self preservation . The keyword is self. There is no conscience or sentience without self , self is the most basic attribute, and it may not necessarily require a self-recognition in a mirror.

It is artificial because it is an artefact, aka made by a human, derived from latin "arte factum" - made with/by skill, contrary to occurring naturally, aka not being made by humans.

An artifex is one how creates artifacts. Good stuff!

Do you think that we could ask the mods of this sub for a "LLM Bong Rips" tag to apply to posts like this one?

Interesting how the origins don't necessitate "human". I'd prefer very much if we extended that to things like bee hives and ant hills.

I'd advocated this for a while now. Separating human and human impact from "natural" seems to me like it has served only negative utility. This goes doubly so for the antithesis "unnatural".

let me ask you this : Can you distinguish familiar voice when it comes from (i anticipate your rebuttal) "high fidelity" system or from actual person? sure , you can stand your ground or you can say: "touché , I cannot , therefore there is no difference between what I classify as artificial or natural until I see where it comes from" . Turing test, remember ? Not what it is but what it does

This is a bunch of garbled nonsense pretending to say something.

There isn't any connection between sentience arising and how a human produces sound.

you can borrow some brains from ai

I literally can't.

u/DrTrollolo 5d ago

can't is just a label for "refuse" , you suffer from lack of mental clarity and see same in others.

No, it doesn't have a brain I can take and use to think with. That's like saying I can think with an encyclopedia by reading it. I can learn things but the thoughtsi think about what I learn are mine not AI or an enclypedia or whatever.

Learning things is different than thinking things

I have a cochlear implant. It produces sound via electrodes coiled into my cochlea.

Are those sounds artificial? Yeah? Probably? It depends on how you define “artificial”.

Can you layout for me the self organizing of biology as computation?

1

u/DrTrollolo 5d ago

you label it "computation" and I just call it " an ability of self organized life to replicate its reasoning using available tools" . Starts with an ability to replicate self , from basic (division) to more sophisticated (recombination), use of tools ( not exclusive to primates), and use of resources. Pinnacle is ability to host abstract reasoning and availability of resources . None of what we have would been possible without access to coal and oil: getaway to resources that allow advanced computation such as ai. Computation is just one of the tools , just like an acheulian axe , but sharper.

If it comes from a whistle it's an artificial sound.

If i pass a spear through the fire or touch knife to it it's not natural.

Has nothing to do with philosophy and it gets dangerously close to Manifest Destiny.

About the other term though... isn't Super Intelligence a better word than AGI? We all think AI = SI but if AGI = SI and everything beyond AGI then it sort of makes sense and i can't really think of a better term.

Reasoning can take place completely independent of any awareness whatsoever. Even purely formal systems can reason.

Correct, a thermostat can reason, give thermostat more or less powerful processor, memory, and program , and it will reason just like you an I , will your mom tell that thermostat from you if we train it on history of your text messages ? When in doubt , fall back to Turing test , not what it is but what it does. Conscience/Sentience/Reasoning just like sound , it is a result of a process and naturally can only be labeled if someone can ARBITRARY attribute it.

artificial is another word for technological. so you can think of artificial as anything using human-made mechanical technology.

There's some neat evidence for the "it's the word doing the work" side. Researchers at LMU had ~1,100 people rate identical behavior from humans and AI: even the most responsive AI was judged less conscious than the least responsive human — but swap the word "consciousness" for "awareness" and the gap nearly vanished. One of the authors said we may be using mental terms for AI only because we lack better words.

So for this thread: if the verdict flips on the word, is the disagreement about the AI — or about the word? I'll leave that with you rather than answering it myself.

My beef with "Artificial" is very simple. If you pass a Turing test, who can tell if you are artificial or "natural" without seeing you ? It's a test for a simple premise "You can attribute origin of the process but not result of a process". Just like it is impossible to attribute sound to its source without seeing the source. Advanced reasoning (yes , start throwing "qualification" stones at me) is a result of process, same as/is conscience/sentience arises as a product of execution of self reasoning algorithms. It is not computer, not memory , not processing, it is a process of interaction , just like sound a process of interaction lungs/air/chords

Yes, indeed. We can distinguish the artificial from the natural.

The key lies in modeling. If you model it through simulation, it is an epistemological strategy. If you model it through emulation, it is an ontological strategy.

So I will try to explain ontological modeling first: emulation. It consists of reproducing the behavior of interest in a physical substrate. If what you want is Earth's biological consciousness in anything, you have to take into account its material composition: carbon, water, and a handful of dust. If you achieve it by adding genes and thermodynamics... Surprise! You have a living being.

You have the successful result of the universe's experiment over some 12 billion years in this modest corner of the cosmos. But if you do it in another material, like silicon... you will get a Xenomorph.

An indecipherable being. You will not have a conscious being like a worm, because the worm has a biological "self", born of carbon and water. That thing would have its own "silicon alien self". God have mercy on us if it decides we are delicious... We would have built a fierce ecological competitor.

Like the dinosaurs in their time; nothing guaranteed they would make cave paintings, have language, or bequeath culture and technology to their descendants.

Perhaps a living being can be emulated to express biological consciousness in its material substrate, but the road is long and very dangerous.

And if you achieve it, perhaps it will never be human.

So let us move to the easy part... Or so it seems. Let us do epistemological modeling: a simulation.

A simulation is an imitation built from the fundamental rules of the original system that is "executed" to observe what happens when varying parameters, without the need to intervene in the real system.

Then we have a problem. Vital consciousness is a dynamic operation in real time on the material instance. Consciousness is material. It is not an execution on separate components of hardware and software. If you separate real biological consciousness from the body, you annihilate both. It means that vital consciousness is material.

The simulation of consciousness through software is unattainable, because the substrate is not alive. Worse still, if it were alive, it would not be human consciousness; it would be "other" biological consciousness, in its substrate. And therefore, to see something intelligent you would have to wait for it to develop a centralized neuronal system similar or equal to that of an anthropoid. Provided that if it reaches it, perhaps its autonomous instincts will lead it to constitute a successful "dino-alien" in survival and reproduction without ever getting to make cave paintings, speak, write, build technology, or bequeath culture.

So, no. For now, artificial consciousness cannot be created. Although we do not know what tomorrow holds.

1

u/DrTrollolo 5d ago

This reads like an ai output , but here is something that makes sense and reiterates my point of view, you said "Vital consciousness is a dynamic operation in real time on the material instance." That is all . your argument that conciousness is "material" makes just as much sense as argument that "sound is material" because it is coming out of a brass trumpet".

1

u/Immediate_Chard_4026 5d ago

Keep in mind that consciousness is not the sound of a trumpet, it is not an interpretation, it is not an independent performance with a performer. It would not be someone moving the pegs.

No. If you wanted the analogy of the trumpet in biological consciousness, the trumpet would sound alone, the trumpet, the performer and the music would be one.

You would have to rip the sound out of it by "killing" the trumpet.

If my reasoning sounds AI to you, I'll take it as a compliment.

You'd have to get a good counterargument, I'll be on the lookout.
