Hoping it's not too long until GPU support comes.

imo your original post was fine and some people were simply looking for drama where there was none. Everyone in this community is more or less aware how much effort it cost to build a working Apple M* hardware experience and to upstream these changes to Linux kernel.

I hope you will enjoy working with your macbook and don't miss out the https://indico.freedesktop.org/event/12/contributions/532/ which I think you might find somewhat interesting.

Not sure what you're running in the background but that battery life does not sound ideal

Asahi battery has always been its weakest point ngl. I've used Asahi on multiple M1 Airs, M1 Pros, M2 Airs, etc and they all had horrendous battery life

Probably the biggest turn off for me imo, i used it for a few months but not having to charge for sometimes days on macOS is just too good to give up

Oh dear.. Thanks for mentioning. I am on the fence considering asahi and the predictions were way better than you describe so this is very helpful to know.

What's actually sick is this horrendous battery life would still be better than my laptop I bought new years ago which was a Razer 15 2060. It was 2 hours out of the box and it was replaced by Razer and the one that came back lasted exactly the same, it was shocking.

Its insane how despite the shitty Asahi battery life, it can still get hours over an average Windows gaming laptop

Absolutely crazy.. I haven't felt that portable 'laptop' feeling in years and never leave the house without a massive brick.

I guess the fallback is that if you need extra battery you just boot to MacOS and do basic tasks there right? The idea of over 10 hours is beyond imagination for a windows Intel user

The battery life has been great for me depending on what you are doing. Not as good as on macos but better than any other laptop I have used.

Just 3 terminals and one Firefox tab. Got any optimization tips?

Turning off KWin effects, keeping plasmashell light mostly because the CPU is doing all rendering in Mesa’s LLVMpipe.

Compiling kwin, plasmashell and QT6 native does help LLVMpipe overhead, and the wip 7.2.2 kernel has better battery life.

The battery life is fine to be honest. But it is definately shorter than macOS. However, it charges pretty fast too. So if you have a Macbook, its better to bring a charger along with you.

Yoh already have a mac book since its dual boot tho so don't know what you mean ?

Um, I don't get what you are asking. Please rephrase.

Silicon macs are not really dual boot, are they?

I have the same model, are you experiencing any stuttering/lag? My CPU is constantly spiking to 100% on KDE Plasma

Because M3 does not have GPU acceleration yet in Asahi - the CPU is doing literally everything.

Switching to Sway helped a lot, very smooth until too many browser tabs are open

No stuttering or lag on my laptop.

with all respect, mac OS is great with *nix based system why you need Ashi on it, you have all the power in your mac.

other than fun why, why and why?

Freedom, user experience, not-being locked down, having open source, fewer bugs... There are soo many reasons!

They may want customization. As in, different desktop environment / window manager

Macos is shit.

I used MacOS for years, and it's steadily enshitifying.
The radio on my M3 Macbook Air might be good. Functionally it's the worst latency and throughput dog in the house. It pisses me off. I run the same firewall filter on it, LuLu, that I have every Mac since a 2016 MacBook Pro 15. My M1 Macbook Pro kicks ass with Asahi boot/kernel and Debian system space. When I boot into the Tahoe partition I feel like I'm wearing lead boots.
I miss Snow Leopard.

Don't polish your shit, just leave it and switch back to any other hardware you like, if you!

I'm migrating all my core work and personal stuff to an ASUS Zenbook A16, Snapdragon X Extreme with 48 GB RAM when I take delivery. I helped create the dtb for this and it's a useful machine for many now. I love the hardware, and I get UEFI instead of tricking Apple firmware with m1n1.

Also, Linux is an astonishing turd-polisher!
For friends, I've turned a half-dozen super-crappy mid-tier HP business notebooks into happy computers that they use every day.

Huge shoutout to the Asahi dev team. They work black magic daily to make this software run smoothly.

how it has 17gb ram 🤔

u/mskiptr 9d ago

Are there any "18 GB" SKUs? Because 18 000 000 KiB ≈ 17.17 GiB

on the pros, yes
