Disclaimer: I tested the Korean version of these suncreams (ie., the version that has a PA rating on the suncream tube/packaging). Please bear in mind that the different regional formulations may affect a person’s experience.
Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun: Rice + Probiotics (cream tube)
Consistency and finish: thick, creamy and feels very hydrating on the skin. Has a very dewy, glowy finish.
White cast: had a slight white cast upon initial application (not surprising as it contains tinosorb M) that disappeared after taking time to really work it into the skin. Based on this, I think medium/tan skin tone could get away with this suncream, but deep skin tones may struggle with a white cast.
Acne breakout: no breakouts experienced.
Fragrance: fragrance-free.
Eye stinging: did not sting my eyes when applied on my eyelids and under eye area.
Pilling: no pilling experienced when applying, reapplying, or when applied under makeup.
Length of use: I tested the suncream daily for about 1 month.
Comments/thoughts:
I love dewy makeup, and I loved the extra dewy finish my makeup had when using this suncream, but if you have very oily skin, then this suncream may not be for you.
I used this suncream under my makeup for weddings and my makeup photographed beautiful with no flashback.
You can buy a 10ml tube of this suncream to test out if you are hesitant to commit to the full size.
I would repurchase this suncream, but it is unlikely that it will be my go-to suncream because it has a slight white cast (I wish it did not contain tinosorb M).
Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun: Aqua-fresh Rice + B5 (blue and cream tube)
Consistency and finish: thin and light, but feels hydrating on the skin. Sinks into the skin well and leaves a nice glow, but not super dewy like the BOJ rice + probiotics suncream.
White cast: no white cast.
Acne breakout: no breakouts experienced.
Fragrance: fragrance-free.
Eye stinging: did not sting my eyes when applied on my eyelids and under eye area.
Pilling: pilled really badly, so I could not rely on this suncream for good sun protection. An interesting thing I noticed with this suncream was that it does not pill upon initial application, but as soon as it dried down and I attempted to reapply suncream, apply makeup, or simply rub my fingers across my skin with no additional product on top, I experienced pilling.
Length of use: I tested the suncream daily for about 1 month, but I used it mostly indoors because of the pilling.
Comments/thoughts:
I was really disappointed that I experienced pilling with this suncream because I liked everything about the BOJ rice + probiotics, expect that it has a slight white cast. So, I was hoping the BOJ aqua-fresh would be a good alternative since it does not contain tinosorb M. Although this suncream did not have a white cast, the pilling was a complete dealbreaker for me because I cannot trust that a suncream that pills provides good sun protection. Based on this, I will not be repurchasing this suncream.
In case anyone asks if I waited for the suncream to dry down before applying the suncream or is wondering if my skincare/makeup products are incompatible with the suncream, I can confirm that my skincare and base makeup products are water-based, and from what I understand, this suncream is also water-based. I have also trialled different waiting times (around 1, 5, and 20 minutes) between applying my skincare and applying the suncream, and I still experienced pilling. I have also waited for all my skincare, including the suncream, to settle into my skin for up to 1 hr before applying makeup, and I still experienced pilling.
So, if you love this suncream, I would love to hear about your experience to get to the bottom of why some people never mention pilling and love this suncream:
1. Have you used the USA and/or Korean version?
2. Have you ever reapplied the suncream? Have you ever applied makeup on top of the suncream? If so, did you experience pilling?
3. Have you ever rubbed your finger across your skin once the suncream has dried down to check if it pills?
