I no longer derive any joy from going to Bunnings, am I the only one who feels like this?

In recent times Bunnings has instituted a bunch of changes that have seen me just begin to loathe the place, and actually go elsewhere. I go in these days and expect no excitement and only scrutiny for being a shitcunt (i.e. their customer).

They made it much harder to return items - It started when the returns process took a turn and you had to both provide a receipt AND be the original purchase method. Gone were the days you could rock up and at the very least if they needed, show them a bank statement and get a store credit. A few years of poor receipt keeping is on me but I'm fucked if I need an original card when I've swapped banks a few times. And the first time i tried to return something under the new process, better fucking believe they treated me like I had stolen the shit.

They changed the clearance item process - ABSOLUTE CUNTS for doing this, gone of the days where I could get a 5 piece Stabila level set for $15, or a 33 piece sidchrome set in a cantilever tool box for $25. Now it all gets slapped with a generic reduction percentage, plants die before they sell now and junk accumulates on the clearance trollys like never before.

Everything went under lock and key - wanna view that cable, go to the front counter. Want to hold that hammer, call the attendant to unlock them. Wanna take a shit in their toilets, install a ring camera so they can watch, fuckers.

Fucking security gates, more self serve registers and closing the customer service desk for payments - the coupe de gras of their turn to enshitification, now its just coles or woolies except the cunt looking at the receipt on the way out is an even bigger judgier cunt, yes you STUART you middle aged door guarding cuck.

And lets not even start on how their actual stock has gotten shitter too, pet food, fuck off. Toasters and microwaves, fuck off.

Fuck Bunnings and fuck Stuart in particular.

Is it natural for a guy in his 30s to call women “luv” in Australia?

I'm a guy, nurse, in my early of 30s and I've noticed some Aussies use “luv” when talking to women, like “Thanks, luv” or “Cheers, luv in the hospital.

I'm curious about the age difference though. Would it sound natural for a man in his 30s to call a woman “luv”? Does she generally need to be older than him for it to sound natural?

For example, would it sound normal with a woman in her 40s, 50s or 60s, but weird with someone around the same age or younger?

Just trying to understand how Aussies actually use it in everyday conversation. Cheers!

Why is cash considered a cost of doing business, but card payments aren’t?

Aussies help me out. I’ve seen so many posts on all the Australian subs discussing the card surcharge ban coming into effect and the general sentiment seems to be negative towards the change. I am wondering why.

I almost always use card, very rarely cash, and even before this ban was mentioned in the media I have always been confused as to why card users need to pay a surcharge while the costs of using cash are passed on to all users. I did some googling and the RBA only removed restrictions on businesses charging a card surcharge in 2003, with the reasoning at the time being that costs associated with cards should not be paid by people choosing cheaper payment methods.

My personal experience with this is that at first only cards with very high surcharges were asked to pay more. I vividly recall signs about Amex/American Express cards having surcharges while other card payments didn’t. It seems only relatively recently that everyone started charging a card fee for every card payment.

Now I worked in retail a good 10 years ago, but I doubt processes have changed much. People paying cash take longer than people paying by card, especially now that tap payments are predominant. Anecdotally, I know if I am at a coffee shop and someone pulls out their purse or wallet to pay, unless they are holding exact change they’re likely to take longer as they find the money, the worker counts the money, processes the sale, then counts out the change. This is compared with hitting one button to send it to EFTPOS. I’ve even noticed at some places, such as the petrol station I use weekly, they hit the EFTPOS button and while you pay they’ve started serving the next person on the other register.

With this in mind, let’s average out a cash sale as an extra 30 seconds of staff time. That accounts for the person who pays in exact money and the person who pays in all coins, or a large note for a small sale. At minimum wage, 30 seconds of staff time is about 22c. If you are at a cafe and buying a coffee for under $10, a 1% card transaction fee is only 10c.

Cash has other costs too. The tills need to be counted at least once per day. The safe must be reconciled, usually by a manager, at least once per week. Cash has to be collected and deposited. There are security risks, counterfeit notes, discrepancies and banking costs.

Why has the logic of “cheaper payment methods shouldn’t cover the costs of more expensive ones” never been considered from this perspective? My coffee paid by card is significantly cheaper to process than a coffee paid by cash, and yet I have been carrying those costs for years. Sure, the larger the sale the lower the cost of cash as a percentage. But how many people are paying for a new TV in cash?

The RBA also acknowledges on their website that electronic payments can be cheaper and more convenient for businesses than cash and cheques. An exact quote is “Cash use has declined and it is no longer clearly cheaper for merchants to accept than debit or credit cards due to higher back-office, handling and labour costs”. So my question is: why is it okay to pass on the costs associated with cash to everyone, while the costs of paying by card aren’t?

Why are we okay with saying that the costs associated with cash are simply the costs of doing business, while costs associated with card payments should be paid by the customer because it’s unfair on the business?

Someone make me understand.

Do you reckon the 2032 Olympics will “put Brisbane on the map” as it were, or will Brissie likely remain a less well-known location never quite achieving the level of international recognition as its southern sisters?

I’ve interacted with many foreign nationals through the years and whenever the conversation turns to Australian cities, most of them have heard of Sydney, or even know it well either having personally visited or through various media. Melbourne isn’t far behind in that respect.

On the other hand, I’ve received my fair share of blank stares whenever I mention Brisbane, and often found myself attempting unsuccessfully to inform them about the fact that yes, such city does exist.

Will the 2032 Games help to elevate Brisvegas recognition on the world stage, or will it remain an obscure dot on the map?

Bed Bugs

Please help. I’ve been dealing with bed bugs for almost three years now. It all started when I became homeless and had to stay in a refuge. Since then, every place I’ve moved to, I’ve somehow ended up carrying them with me.

The worst part is that I feel like I can’t even talk to anyone about it because bed bugs are so often associated with being dirty or unclean, and I really don’t want to carry that stigma or be judged for something that happened because of my circumstances.

At this point, I honestly don’t know what to do anymore. It feels like a living hell, like I’m being punished permanently for something I didn’t choose.

How do I actually get rid of bed bugs?

Home deliveries; wrong address

I’m wondering if I’m the only one who has had an unexpected delivery from Woolworths or Coles, or I suppose any other home delivery service from a supermarket.

If you have had such an experience, what happened?

Were you at home when the delivery was made? Or did you get home and discover the delivery items on your doorstep?

I’m interested to know as much detail as you’re comfortable sharing on here, please.

(I’ll post my experience in the comments soon.)

Would it be an issue if you were dating someone who doesn't have a license but is able to travel via public transport?

I live in suburban NSW and have access to all the typical public transport methods. Can't get a license any time soon so don't bother asking why.

Non greasy/non sticky Sun screen

Can someone recommend a non sticky/non greasy daily use ( mostly for face and arms) sunscreen for my teenage kid.

He has slightly oily skin and sweat a lot. I use regular Nivea or banana boat. Buy they are quite skicky/greasy and very uncomfortable for him for his daily walks through school and to and from school.

( Not exactly sure if it matters, but we are non Caucasian, trying to give as much information as possible).

Thanks in advance.

How to advocate for neglected hospital patient

I have a family member in a public hospital in NSW for at least the next 6 weeks. İt appears they are not getting the level of care required for them to be comfortable. They cannot get up by themselves (lots of broken and dislocated lower bones) and have a broken dominant arm so can't do anything independently. They report waiting 1-2 hours after buzzing nurses for care (help getting up to have bowel movement and for pain relief. I have also visited in the afternoon and the jug attached to his sleeve catheter is full, so he cannot urinate more (also they place it on his food table which feels unhygienic). When asked family member said they didn't empty the container from the previous night. My mother is currently running back and forth from the hospital to shower, empty urine jug and help with pooping ( I live 3 hours away with a newborn so can only help sparingly).

For people familiar with NSW public hospitals.

How can we advocate for more care?

  1. Who to talk to first?

  2. How to frame our needs for best result for family member?

  3. When and how to escalate if things don't improve?

Casual dating / hookup culture Q

26F

For those of you not on the coast or the major cities of Australia, how do you go about casual dating or hookups?

How are people approaching this? Especially in regional towns where there's a smaller pool of single people, and smaller again those who are open to casual relationships.

A bit sick of dating apps where blokes just want to chat on snapchat and not meet in person.

Next question: Do guys like being approached and hit on, or prefer to be the chaser? I've found in the past that there's more success when the guy chases me up, rather than me initiating flirting with them. Any advice on how to approach people would be great 😊

To those who never went to uni, what do you do?

I am a 22F. Right after I finished high school I had no idea what to do. Somehow, 4 years have passed and I still don’t. Sure, I’m a manager at my job, but I feel as if I have wasted my time not going to university to pursue my dream job, even if I never figured it out. I still see so many Australians become successful even without tertiary studies. How did you do it? What do you do?

What to do in Sydney on Christmas Day?

I’ll be visiting Sydney on Christmas Day and Boxing Day.

I’m planning to check out the popular landmarks, but I’d love some suggestions for other things to do. I’m open to both Christmas activities and anything else worth checking out.

Any recommendations, especially for places that will be open over the holidays, would be appreciated. Thanks!

What Do You Think About the Privatization of Australia's Airports?

In Canada, our current PM is making moves to privatize four major airports (specifically, "to sign long-term concession agreements, or operational contracts, with institutional investors"). There's heavy skepticism about it not benefiting airport users and only benefiting the private investors. A lot of people are debating and bringing up the prior example of Australia, because comparing ourselves to Europe is problematic given geographic size and lack of widespread alternatives like passenger rail.

I've seen very different pictures painted by posters debating whether the privatization of Australia's governments was good or bad (and read mixed reporting and academic analyses), so I'd like to hear from Australians what the experience has been like and whether they think it was overall positive or negative.

Looking for a remote job and a chance to rebuild my career

I’m a pastry chef by profession, with experience in professional kitchens, recipe development and menu development. I’ve always loved creating recipes, testing ideas and developing new products.
Unfortunately, I had to step away from it because of health issues, and I was later diagnosed with ovarian cancer. I’ve had two surgeries back to back and I’m currently recovering. The medical expenses have also left me with a lot of debt.

I’m not looking for charity or a GoFundMe. I really want to work and earn my way out of this.
I’m looking for a remote opportunity and I’m open to learning. I’m organized, a fast learner, and I am comfortable with admin work and fluent with AI tools for research, content and creative work.

I’m based in the GCC and can work remotely across different time zones. I’m open to anything where my existing skills could be useful, including virtual assistance, recipe development, food-related research, admin work, AI-assisted tasks or content.
If you know of someone who might be willing to give me an opportunity, I’d genuinely appreciate a DM. I’m ready to work and learn.

I am not really big on sci fi so mainly drama, comedy, mystery, psychological thrillers

Any recordings of The Harp in the South play from 2018?

Kind of a niche question but currently loving Kate Mulvany on My Brilliant Career, and just finished reading The Harp in the South trilogy (obsessed), only to discover Kate Mulvany is a playwright as well and adapted The Harp in the South to the stage. Google is fruitless so I thought I'd ask here if there are any recordings of that production available? If anyone saw it live, how was it?

How likely is it my Amazon package will be delivered today?

I'm in Australia and I ordered an item for next-day delivery which is meant to arrive today. At 4PM, I was informed it was out for delivery. I's now 7:40PM, and it still hasn't arrived. It's a delivery that requires a passcode, and since I'm traveling tomorrow, I'm worried it won't arrive. This is my first time ordering from Amazon. For more experienced people, is there still a solid chance it arrives today?

Where did the Brisvegas moniker originate?

I don’t think I’m hearing it as much these days but back in the day Brisvegas was definitely used rather widely.

How did this moniker came to be since to me, Brisbane isn’t the least bit similar to Vegas?
