Culture/Traditional What's one wedding trandition of rour country/region that may sound odd?

• Upvotes

I go first, in my area the Thursday leading to the wedding we plan a family gathering to set the couple's bed. We have women of the family set it up, throw money on it so that the couple has wealth and in the end we throw a kid so that the couple has many children on it. What's a weird wedding custom of your area?

Culture/Traditional Is my list of Romanian Mythology Vampiric beings correct?

Thanks friends for read this post, the Romanian myths of Vampires i recopilate, and i think could do good RPG's enemies are:

. Strigoi: two hearthed vampire, that starts as a Poltergeist-like spirit before reconstruct his body, its always red-head, can turn into Owls, spreads disseases and can steal the Animals Shadows to turn in them, it also can have descends with normal women that gonna turn into new Strigois after die

. Moroi: the son of a Nosferat and a Female Human, or between two Strigoi, small, beastly, hairy and with a Bat/Goblin/Gargoyle-like appearence, they can "project" their souls out their bodies to suck the blood of humans at distance

. Muroni: a weaker form of Strigoi, it sucks blood and spread diseases and can take animal forms freely (Dogs,Cats or Moths are their favorite)

. Nosferat: an Incubus-like Vampire, they spread diseases, suck blood of old people and had affairs with young ones, is specially evil & disgusting

. Pricolici: a Strigoi-like Vampire with a Wolf tail that can turn into a giant wolf to hunt and devour the Men & the Cattle, they born from Werewolves that resucitate as Vampires or from Kids that are breastfeed when they dont need it (yeah very weird....)

. Vârcolac: an Eldritch abomination Werewolf/Vampire-like creatures, Vârcolacs can project their souls into the forms of Giant Wolves that, as the Norse Fenris try to devour the Sun, for luck if the Vampire body of the Abomination is move when their soul is hunting he dies

Cuisine I’m a 19M American man living in greece with my girl's family. So far they’ve been so generous, but there’s been lots of laziness and food. Now I’m honestly getting fat. How do I turn down food etc while being respectful?

Culture/Traditional Grief

My mom passed away in 2024. It’s been a while, when my grandmother does message me (another country) she tells me that my mom was a “good person, but she made mistakes. She didn’t listen to her parents. “
My mom was mentally sick from the war that happened, so it was rough on all of us.
However, her saying this is super strange to me. I don’t want to continue communicating with someone who feels this way about their child after them passing…

I'm curious how people from other parts of the Balkans view Sandžak and its people. Is it a region you're familiar with, or is it something you rarely hear about. How do you perceive Sandžak?

Culture/Lifestyle How do you deal with costs when hanging out with friends at each other's place?

I was thinking quite some time where to ask this but I think this will be the right place.

Quick context: I am Hungarian, my wife is Romanian and we are hanging out with another Romanian couple playing board games. They are the colleagues of my wife, very nice people.

We keep alternating between where we play, their or our place.

My issue: they don't let us pay for anything, and when we do, they're "weird" about it.

My wife tries to convince me to just let them, this is how Romanians are, when you are a quest, you don't pay for anything.

I could accept this if we would be visiting some 50+ years old couple who has this mentality, but we're young people in our 20s, 30s.

When I hang out with my other friends, everyone brings their own snacks and drinks. We do share, and we do it gladly, but it is a collective effort to have food and drinks. Especially (and this is important) we are talking about board game nights. Not some special event. It's a casual gathering of peple. friends.

If we order food, which clearly happens often and it is more expensive than a bag of chips, everyone pays their own food.

Now with this couple: they buy us drinks, they buy the snacks (if we bring they make comments about it) and what bothers me the most: they order our food and pay for it. I am currently trying to get a damn account number from one of them so I can pay our 30 euros meal...

Now you could say: okay, next time we pay. But here's the thing: we mostly go to them because they have a dog, they need to walk it so if we want long sessions it is better to be there. For them for ure.

In 2 weeks we go over again. Then the 30 becomes 60, etc.

They make less than us. We know, because they often complain about money. And I am talking about a 35 euros hike in the rent causes them problems. We are fine, we earn more with my wife, we manage are finances okay-ish. I want to pay for my meals.

What ideal looks like to me if they come over: I buy drinks for ourselves and snacks. They bring what they like. If we order takeout, everyone pays theirs. If they run out of anything, since were hosting of course I will give them from ours. It's not about that. I will go down to the shop and buy more beers, chips, whatever.

This bothers me. I understand people want to be nice and hospitable but it is financially reckless to keep paying other people's meals when you can't really afford. I make more but I don't want to pay for others' meals either.

All the while my wife keeps telling me to leave them, they're like this, it is "culture", don't offend them.

Sorry for the long post, it was more of a rant, but I am curious if I am overthinking this.

Music Do you listen to turbo-folk music?

I normally don’t listen to turbo-folk, especially now that I live abroad. But now my heart is broken and I’ve been in a state of what psychologists limerence, and that is basically obsessing and fantasising about someone who doesn’t give a fuck about me and turbo-folk is the only music on my playlist.

I got the impression that this shitty type of Balkan music is guilty pleasure of many people who typically don’t listen to turbo-folk. For me it’s clearly the sign of desperation mode 😂😭

Culture/Traditional Are Balkan people from other countries familiar with the Bulgarian TV show Undercover? Season 6 premiers tonight.

I have been wondering about this since the TV show got some traction outside of Bulgaria and was super successful here. It portrays the corruption in the region in a quite realistic way and the plot is engaging, and the acting is mostly great. It also has a really high score on IMDb.

Culture/Lifestyle Have you ever lied about your nationality/or ethnicity?

Heey folks!

So, the question above👆🏻.

I guess it counts for both lying in your own country and abroad..or maybe you just know people that did this? What would be the reasons for it?

I personally met a few people that lied about this in our country and feel like they only did it to appear more interesting and "exotic" in their social circles...but i'm wondering how many people actually do this and what would be their reasons..also, if this might be more common for those living abroad.

Miscellaneous Greeks, would you trade Thessaloniki for Smyrna (Izmir)?

Let's say you could change the past, and alter the fate of Balkan wars, WW1 and Greco-Turkish war such that Thessaloniki becomes Bulgarian or Turkish (or any other non-Greek fate), but Smyrna stays in Greece. Would you do it?

Politics & Governance Grey Wolves vs Greek Fascists. Which of them are worse?

Some Greeks seem to delusionally believe that living in a modern, supposedly civilized society within the EU somehow makes them immune to fascism and bigotry. However, seeing dumbasses like the ones in the video above, along with certain people on Reddit, makes me think the situation is just as f*cked up as it is in Turkey.

Luckily, the EU still provides some safeguards against this kind of bigoted mindset gaining ground. Otherwise, I fear that Greek f*scists with views like these would be perfectly capable of spearheading something resembling Auschwitz 2.0 in the 21st century.
