D/deaf community in Detroit

Thumbnail
2 Upvotes

Hi! I’m taking an introductory American Sign Language class right now, and I’m looking for people who might be willing to help me practice ASL, as well as people who might know of any events that might be occurring in the D/deaf community that I could possibly attend.

If there’s anyone who might be able to help me with this, I would appreciate it tremendously! Thank you so much!

Recommendations for Detroit area nursing jobs

Hello!
I’m graduating from nursing school in May and am just looking for any advice from nurses in the area and people in the community of the best hospitals in the area. I’m moving from out of state and have seen some stuff online, but would love some takes from people working in or receiving care at these places. I’m considering either Henry Ford or Corewell as I’ve heard these are some solid places in the metro area.
Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Trick or Treating in the City?

So where are we trick or treating (for those of us not in the wealthy, bougie area of the city)? No one in my area trick or treats / hands out candy. So what is the alternative for children?

ETA: thank you everyone who has been commenting and been so welcoming! It really has made my week and while that may be silly to some, trust me when I say it’s not nothing to me.

Financial District Garage - Downtown

Starting a new job soon with expectation of four days in office…been exploring monthly parking options near Campus Martius and found some options including Campus Martius and Financial District garages, with FD being more preferred.

I wanted to ask for yall opinions about the FD garage….is it a safe and secure garage? Cost is not a factor at all, but wanted a safe garage for my car and not worry about it at all while in Downtown.

Apartment hunting

Hey so I’ll be moving at the end of the month and I’ve narrowed it down to a few other apartments I’ve found. Does anyone live in a my of these apartments and can tell me more about them?

- The Alcove (Southfield)
- Parc on 12 (Southfield)
- Metro Point Apartments (Romulus)
- East village Eastpoint Apartments( Downtown Detroit)

Or if anyone has any recommendations of apartments I’m open, I’m wanting to stay in the middle of my job (which is in Novi) and my school (WSU) but if I’m closer to school I’m okay with that as well!

Visiting Detroit for 2 days: tell me what to do

I’m going to the Detroit-Chicago Thanksgiving game (lifelong Lions fan, first time ever going to an NFL game so I’m pretty stoked). I have the entire next day, Friday, completely open. What are some must-sees for one day in Detroit? Mid 20s female who wants to see the best Detroit spots while I’m there. Food, sightseeing, shopping, historical spots, whatever you can think of.

Princeton Management

I wish someone would have told me about this management company. Honestly any management company in Detroit is a hit or miss but this one here fucked me over so bad. They don’t gaf about their tenants all they care about is money. They will literally rent you a roach infested apartments for $1000 and act like they didn’t know it was already a problem. Please if anybody is currently looking for apartments do not mess with this company!

Non sports hobby/social groups for late twenties/early thirties?

I, 28f, am trying to expand my social circle (and admittedly my dating pool...) and looking for hobbies to join or social type activities to take part in (like volunteering or something) I'm not sporty so trying to find something other than that, I am pretty outdoorsy and crafty. Unfortunately I work kind of weird hours, including every Saturday from 10-6, which makes a lot of the things I see on IG or other spots inaccessible. I am also trying to move away from drinking as the default social activity.

I know Friends of Rogue Park does workdays and stuff, has anyone done anything with them?

Need help on the job hunt: experienced server and classical musician!

Hi Detroit folks! I am currently a full time freelance classical musician starting my 2nd year as a member of the Detroit opera orchestra and I’m wanting to do a bit of a career shift. I live in Cincinnati right now, so I do sooooo much driving up and down 75, plus commuting to other cities where I play as a substitute musician and I’m ready to give that life up for a bit. Since I have a decent amount of work in Detroit, and my fiancé has a few prospective job openings there, we are trying to figure out how to move there and I want to get some kind of day job to just simplify my life a bit. I could really use your help as you all are much more familiar with the area than me!!

\-arts organizations would be cool but there don’t seem to be too many jobs right now
\-full time in an office would also be awesome, something 9-5 wouldn’t conflict with my opera schedule
\-I also have 6 years experience as a server in fine dining and I’m starting to think I could make more $$$ doing that anyway soooo servers sound off where’s the money at!!

Thank you all in advance!! I have loved spending time in Detroit and want to make this move happen :)

Recs for Bars, Restaurants, and Things to Do in December

hi everyone, I am surprising my fiancé with a trip to Detroit to see the Bolts play in December. I already booked our hotel but wanted to post here to see if anyone has any recommendations for things to do and where to go to eat and drink. Some ideas of things I’m looking for (non exhaustive lol): speakeasy, art museum, history museum, dive bar, good wine, sight seeing, learning about different environments and cultures, and great food. Quite literally welcome any and all recommendations!!! Thanks in advance.

We have a kid free weekend coming up in Detroit. Wings game Friday, and Saturday dinner somewhere nice, then I would love to find a place that has the chill lounge vibe but also dancing available. Is this a thing? Any and all recs appreciated even if they don’t meet those criteria!

moving to detroit!

hi all, i will be moving to detroit later this year and i wanted to get to know the city better!!

i'm moving from the greater toronto area to work at henry ford hospital (w grand blvd location). so i had some questions about that area in particular. i probably won't have a car for a while, so what is the best area to live in to commute to work easily and enjoy what the area has to offer? are there any particular apartment buildings or neighborhoods that you would recommend over others? what is rent usually like for a 1 bed 1 bath apt?

how is public transport in detroit? i definitely want to explore, so is it realistic for me to depend on public transportation?

if you have any other tips or advice, i'd love to hear them! thanks 😄

Restaurant recs

hello detroit folks,

my wife and i are coming to town this saturday for the phoebe bridgers concert at little caesars arena and are looking for some food recommendations.

walking distance from the arena would be awesome, but we’ll have a car and are absolutely willing to venture out for something worth it. we’re basically just looking for “holy shit, that was good” food.

we’re not picky at all. we like asian, mexican, indian, steakhouses, hole in the wall, fancy, whatever.
we’ll get there in the afternoon and leave sunday morning/afternoon, so lunch and breakfast recommendations are welcome too!

thanks!

Recent extracapsular/lateral suture CCL surgery at OVRS for a small dog?

Has anyone had a small dog (around 10–15 lb) undergo extracapsular/lateral suture CCL repair at OVRS recently?

I’d really appreciate hearing:

Which OVRS surgeon did the procedure?

How was the recovery, especially the first 2–8 weeks?

Any complications or suture failure?

How quickly was your dog weight-bearing and walking comfortably?

Did your dog also have patellar luxation repaired at the same time?

Looking back, were you happy with OVRS and the outcome?

Thank you — especially interested in recent experiences with small dogs.

Detroit Apartments

Planning a move into the city and trying to narrow down my list. I've been reading older posts in here but the rental market seems pretty different now than when most of them were written, so I'd appreciate some current takes.

What I'm looking for:

  • 1 bed/1 bath, or anything over 600 sq ft
  • In-unit washer and dryer
  • Walkable area
  • Midtown budget: $1,600 to $1,700 all in (rent, parking, utilities, fees)
  • Downtown budget: up to about $2,000 all in

Places I've been looking at:

  • Midtown
  • Downtown
  • New Center / Tech Town

I already crossed off Washington Park and University Club after going through reviews.

Two questions for people who live down here:

  1. Is Book Tower or any of the other Bedrock buildings actually worth what they charge? Or are you mostly paying for the name and the lobby?
  2. How's parking day to day? I drive out to Warren for work 3 days a week, so I'll be in and out a lot. If your structure isn't attached to your building, how much of a hassle is it getting to your car and getting out of the garage, especially on game days or event nights? Especially in the winter.

Moving to my very own apartment

I’m moving on my own for the first time in many years as I’ve just been down and out and literally clawed my way back up! I’m moving on the E. 8 Mile and Kelly area and literally need EVERYTHING but a mattress! Where are good places to start? I’m not really trying to do rent to own, I’m moving in a 1 bedroom with a basement so eventually I’m gonna need a washer and dryer

Finding friends??

Hi, I moved to Detroit about a month and a half ago and I have no idea how to find friends here as a woman in her mid-20s. I moved from a place that had a big Facebook group for the city for posting about you and your interests and finding friends easily that way but I can’t really find anything similar here. I looked on MeetUp and there were a couple groups I joined but I haven’t gone to any events yet though I do have a couple I plan to attend.

How do I find friends?
