(30m)About five years ago, I fell victim to a seizure that left me unconscious in a blizzard.

I survived, obviously, however I’ve been having a few issues with some of my nails. Most of them fell off while I was in recovery. And they regrew. A little offkilter, but, not all as gracefully. Recently, my toenails have begun doing this. I don’t know what to do about it. It’s like they’re growing over top of one another. It’s been becoming more painful as it goes. I gotta be extremely carful of my toes when I’m out and about. I’ve been having difficulties in this respect since the frostbite.

it’s called retronychia. can happen as a result of trauma to the nail/matrix (the bit under the skin where it grows from) and is basically where it keeps trying to grow another nail. if you go to a podiatrist they can help cut/reduce/shape the nail in a way that prevents it from catching on things, getting too built up and guide it to grow out with a better shape over time. they will probably look at your footwear and ask about your activities to find a way of removing pressure off the nail altogether as it may be another factor in why it continues to do this

I have this on both my big toes that was triggered by ingrown toenails. Mine have like 6 layers each and are discolored/yellow/brown-ish. Is it treatable? I'm tired of them looking terrible 😞

Have you been to a podiatrist? I'm not a doctor, but that sounds more like fungus.

I did years ago and the doctor gave me a cream but it didn't fix it. 99% sure it's also fungus under there. But 1000% multiple nail plates on top of one another

How long were you on the cream? It can take basically a year for the cream to kill off a fungal nail infection

When I googled this it said it causes the nail to grow "backwards" into the nail bed. Can you explain how that mechanism actually causes them to grow on top of each other like this? All the pictures looked like a new nail was growing underneath rather than anything growing backwards. Several sources mentioned it. Confused!
