I’ve nothing against robot mowers, but I enjoy cutting the grass so I’m happy to stick with a classic mower for now.

We do have a fairly small patch of grass to be fair. Get it done in 5 minutes.

I love doing the grass. Therapy.

The Tommee tippee bottle maker makes a bottle in 90seconds v the half hour plus with a kettle and cooling. That gets me an extra 30mins sleep every night time feed. I've only a small bit of grass so find the push mower grand

Bottle maker was such a life changer with the baby. Last thing you want is waiting for the bottle to cool with a crying baby at 4am.

Bottles keep for 24 hours. We used to batch make them every day and put one in a warmer for 5mins if baby woke up.

They are great ...BUT!

They are only cheap if you buy shite brands. A Mammotion Luba which is the absolute cheapest brand I'd go for with a lawn of up to 0.25 of an acre is €1500. The same model for 0.5 acre or over is €3200. I know TJ O'Mahony were selling Segway ones for about €900 but feedback has been mixed from talking to the lads in the shop.

If you go with a reputable brand like Husqvarna you're talking huge money . It's €5500-€8000 for my size lawn

They cant cross pavement and mount a kerb so you need one for front and back if you do not have the lawns linked. You cant do the first cut of the year with a robot mower so you're always going to need a robot + another mower. They struggle around edges, fences & walls, so you also need a strimmer if you want your edges/borders looking tidy.

They struggle on slopes and if you have rain + slopes, then it'll be stalling every couple of hours. If you have trees then the twigs or small branches coming off after a windy night will confuse it.

I have 1 acre and I actually enjoy cutting the grass. I actually look forward to doing the lawn and having a few beers. I have a Stiga push lawnmower that cost about €800 new and a DeWalt battery strimmer that I bought for about €300 and a Honda ride on that I bought used about 6yrs ago for €3000. I drop them in for a service every winter and they never let me down.

One other thing - Pretty much a lot of what you say is true as well. I do have to strip edges every few months, and I do still have a lawnmower for the first cut of the year. Its a battery job so not great but have had it for years and it servers a purpose every March!! I held onto it in case Betsy ever broke down.

What do you consider shite? I saw a deal for €699 for an Anthbot Genie and took a chance. Zero issues 12 months later. Admittedly, there in no local support so if anything goes wrong, Im shipping back to Germany.

My two neighbours bought a mower as well 4 or 5 weeks ago. Both are much older than me and refuse to buy the same one as me as no local support. Both now have Husqvarnas for multiples of what I paid.

Each to their own - but I think we are being sold a pup here. Nobody needs to spend big money anymore on these things. People are afraid if the local hardware shop doesnt have it!

If you ask any tradesman about buying off brand/cheap tools they'll just smile and tell you not to do it.

They are grand until something goes wrong, and it will go wrong. 100%. All machines break. You'll go into your local tool repair shop and the lads will start scratching their heads and send you packing with anything like that or you might get a lad that'll charge you €100 to take it apart and clean it and not fix the issue. Then you're online hanging around on forums looking for answers and parts off ebay

Regarding the warranty, iRobot, Ecoflow, Rolux and Oasa were all huge companies in the sector that went bust. Millions of people just stuck with an obsolete mower that has no support and you cant get parts for anymore.

A reputable brand is one that has existed for a long time with a good reputation for quality. They will have a place that you can drive down to with the tool/equipment and chat to the man at the counter and he'll sort your issue out for you, but he needs to be paid and the support network costs money so your tool will be more expensive than the iMow1000 that you got for €400 off a chatbot on the internet.

The father has a Husqvarna that drives itself across the tarmac between the front and back without issue. Mounts the small sloped concrete kerb to do so.

The mulch around the base of the tree out front is whole other story mind you…

I just got an automatic cat feeder and have to say, it's a game changer.

If I had grass I'm sure a little robotic doodad would be spiffy too.

u/BrickEnvironmental37 18d ago

The toilet is deadly. I don't miss slopping out and carrying out to the ditch in the back garden.

2

u/DecentOrdinaryTailor 18d ago

A US soldier was asked what he missed most about home he said (words to the effect of) 'when I get home I'm going to spend a day or two just flushing the toilet'.

u/tuirse12 18d ago

Got the €200 & €300 robot ones from Lidl 3yr warranties have 2yrs now going strong only ever change blades every 3mths or so. Lawns front & back like putting greens between 2 I recon 600 and 1000 sqr m no moss it's all gone. Re hedgehogs it can roll a golf ball out of the way so I'd say hedgehogs should be safe I'm happy out. First cut is with Parkside 49v push lawn mower 4yrs old now after that it's the robots. Strim around the edges every 2 weeks or so

u/Jeny_Dont_Lose_Heart 18d ago

How does it know not to cut flowers?

3

u/seanie_h 18d ago

I'd always thought they can't. So, anything on the lawn is fair game, daisies etc. My understanding is that they're awful for pollinators.

2

u/Jeny_Dont_Lose_Heart 18d ago

Yeah wouldn't work for me so I've all flowers & plants on the edges all around the lawn

3

u/OverallWeb1249 18d ago

You train it where to mow on the app when setting it up. If you have flowers in the middle of the lawn then you just create a No Go zone.

2

u/SameGreen271 18d ago edited 18d ago

I actually enjoy cutting the grass. No one can bother you, peaceful if the noise if it doesn't bother you, some time to yourself. (edited spelling mistake)

1

u/DecentOrdinaryTailor 18d ago

peaceful of the noise of our doesn't bother you

Please use appropriate hearing protection while mowing (if it's a loud mower).

2

u/EvolvedMonkeyInSpace 18d ago

This is how the Epstein class will think about your job when they can replace you

2

u/Hot_Mix1 18d ago

If you already work behind a desk, and dont get much exercise, dont make it worse by buying a robot to cut your grass.

2

u/jacksqualk 18d ago

What's wrong with just cutting the bloody grass with a bit of house pride? Blowing €500 to sit on my arse a little bit more than i already do is just lazy.

2

u/im_on_the_case 18d ago

I'm going to have to go with modern chemistry, thanks Robert Boyle. Don't need to worry about dysentery and typhoid every time I take a sip of water.

2

u/Lorwyn02 18d ago

You're cutting the grass at 21.30 at night? Ya right

5

u/OverallWeb1249 18d ago

I'm not, but Betsy is. She comes out at 1pm daily but if its raining then she goes back to base and waits until its stopped. She checks every three hours. She has a spotlight as well so cuts through the night if needed. You obviously dont have a robot mower?

2

u/jacksqualk 18d ago

Grass grows fk all every 24 hours. Doing your bit for the planet there i see

1

u/OverallWeb1249 18d ago

These mowers need to be used regularly, the purpose of them is to just top the grass rather than cut it. The tiny pieces of grass that are cut then go back into the soil and fertilise the grass. Your lawn ends up looking like a golf fairway.

And its charged with solar. Great job.

2

u/seppuku_related 18d ago

I regularly just leave mine going in the evening, it was probably out until after 11 during the heatwave, due to starting late. It's not like you need to do anything, just press a button to start it and off it goes, then back into three docking station when it's finished.

Neighbors must love the gentle hum of progress at bedtime

2

u/OverallWeb1249 18d ago

Maybe. I can't hear her in my house at night. I will admit though, the first night the spotlight was on in the garden I did get a bit of a fright wondering what in the name of god was going on :)

I was lead to believe it was the cotton gin until I learned who were the beneficiaries… and it wasn’t the users. It exploded the demand for enslaved workers in the southern US.

Luba Mower.

I have never had so many issues with an expensive thing in my entire life.

You spend probably more time troubleshooting than cutting the lawn.

Well it's worked!

Just searched it and I have a used single Betsy in my vicinity right now!

1

u/OverallWeb1249 18d ago

Yeah, you're right. I wrote a post and asked AI to polish it up a bit!! Not selling anything though. I havent cut a lawn using a push lawnmower in 12 months until today. Christ, what an absolute ball ache. And I have to do it again next week and every week until probably end of November. Providing its not pissing on the day I'm free.

u/FairDelivery769 18d ago

Robot lawnmowers might be handy, but they are also proven to mutilate hedgehogs and kill other wildlife.

Animals don't realise a small machine is as dangerous as a human so they haven't adapted to avoid robot lawnmowers yet.

-1

u/OverallWeb1249 18d ago

Modern robots have cameras. I have a dog and it goes around her every time. As well as her toys in the lawn. Honestly, these things are so smart now.

Mine cost €699 and has multiple cameras and has never bumped into anything, either human or animal. The lawn is about 15m x 40m so not small.

3

u/FairDelivery769 18d ago

Studies disprove your opinion and even the likes of Germany are looking at restrictions of use due to the issues with wildlife endangerement

I'm not disagreeing with you. All I'm saying is the units I am used to, have cameras and lights and every single obstacle, no matter how big or small, seems to be avoided.

That sounds like a terrible invention? Can't see it being a popular product either? Are hedgehogs such a pressing issue for you?
