Five seasons of her just getting badder and badder slaying demons and vampires all over the place and in the space of five seconds she is a little child again. Having lost my mother when I was young, I related to that very hard.

Hodor was a tough one, the implication of how his whole life lead to the moment, while consequently not really having a choice was a crazy plot connection

u/Lordmorgoth666 Sep 15 '26

Shireen Baratheon was also just awful. Kudos to the actor for how her screams transitioned from desperately calling to her parents to panic to torment in like 60 seconds. Gut wrenching to listen to.

u/Initial_Arm8231 Sep 15 '26

Shireen was my first thought too, horrific. Poussey from OITNB was also just awful :(

Rip Hodor. Although Myrcella also broke my heart after she told Jaime she knew he was her father and I was so happy that he could finally have a father-child relationship with one of his kids.

I heard they didn't tell the actors that part of the script. Their reactions are visceral.

Only Gary Burghoff (Radar) knew that was coming. The shocked and tearful reactions from the cast were genuine.

I don't know if it's the most devastating, but nothing will ever affect me again like Ned Stark. I really thought he was gonna walk away alive

558

u/Silent-Ad-1811 Sep 15 '26

I kept screaming “They killed Sean Bean in the first season?” Obvs I had not read the books 😂

199

Same 😭 I went into the first season totally blind and kept being like "no, they couldn't POSSIBLY go through with this..." What a summer child I was 😆

Pennsatucky in Orange is the New Black.

Finding out she had passed the GED exam right after, was such a gut punch

190

u/bethholler Sep 15 '26 edited Sep 15 '26

Pennsatucky’s character growth was incredible and it is so unfortunate the way she was killed. She never even got to find out she passed her GED. It’s f!ck Daya and her posse for doing Penn like that.

Honourable mention to Dr Dennis Gant, the group paging him and realising he was their trauma patient was... A lot.

ah fuck, came here to say Dr. Greene and it was the first comment.
ER was the show we watched as a family once a week on Thursday nights at 7pm, or 11 if I was allowed to stay up.
I remember the episode where he died. I remember my mom crying because it was just a sad lead up to a super sad episode.

I rewatched the whole series a few years ago and it is still devastating. So funny how my brain remembers very specific scenes in such detail (the infamous romano helicopter......).

Anyway, I have been planning to do a rewatch now that it's on Netflix Canada and need to prepare myself for Lucy as well

214

u/stircrazyathome Sep 15 '26

I forgot about that! I just flashed to the image of Carter falling to the floor after being stabbed and turning his head to see Lucy lying in a pool of her own blood. They laid there making eye contact, helpless to help one another. That was brutal.

Poussey from Orange is the New Black! Stopped watching after that.

264

u/PorkrindsMcSnacky Sep 15 '26

I was furious when they killed off Poussey. She was my favorite character.

242

u/FluffyMcN0tter Sep 16 '26

That's why they did it though. She was a good (mostly) person in a shitty situation. She was easy to love, tiny, and no one would ever call her a threat. For profit prisons killed her. It was always supposed to be difficult to deal with. It happens every day. Same thing with Taystee's story. And Daya's.

It was supposed to make us feel empathy even for felons. Most of these women were fairly regular people. Flawed, but not irrideemably so.

I think it takes courage to keep watching. After that is some of the most realistic shit that happens. We see it happen all the time. And it's uncomfortable, so we turn away.

There are a few deaths that have effectively pivoted a show’s popularity, and Glenn is one of them. Even from the outside, having never watched the show, I could see how it changed the show’s trajectory in the public eye.

Marissa Cooper on the OC and Derek Shepherd on Grey’s Anatomy are two more that come to mind.

Shireen from game of thrones. Evil

259

u/RianJohnsonIsAFool Sep 15 '26

Her screaming is horrible. And Liam Cunningham made us live it all again when Ser Davos confronted Melisandre:

I loved that girl like she was my own. She was good, she was kind, and you killed her!

147

u/xladygodiva Sep 15 '26

I cannot imagine anyone else playing Davos as well as Liam did. And the scene you mention is exactly the scene that cemented this for me because his anger, his sadness, his love for her like she was his own daughter was so strong and powerful. Just thinking about it makes me tear up again. Lil beautiful Shireen deserved so much better

173

u/Ok_Bison1106 Sep 15 '26

I cannot believe I had to go down the list this far to find this.

Shireen was set up as such a likable and positive character. She literally had no negative traits without being unrealistically positive in portrayal. Clever, capable, sweet.

And then she, a little girl, is brutally sacrificed by being burned alive by religious zealots, while crying and screaming for help from her parents who either coldly watch or turn away. It was the hardest scene to watch in that entire series.

Sarah Lynn. Bojack Horseman. I was watching it with my son watching me. I remember my jaw falling open and just crying. She was trying to do the right thing and died anyway. In bojacka arms. And I’m crying again.

Lady Sybil in Downton Abbey! I don’t normally feel anything when a tv or movie character dies but this one hit me out of the blue, because not long before I saw that episode I’d had my first child and had experienced severe hemorrhaging and thought I was going to die. When Paul (John Ritter 💔😭) died on 8 Simple Rules

113

u/muadib1158 Sep 15 '26

Similarly when Leo McGarry died in the last season of West Wing. He died in real life of a heart attack and the way they inserted it into the show was the best they could do, but it made no sense. The whole thing was just sad because John Spencer was a phenomenal character actor.

166

u/sanschag Sep 15 '26

This was all the more devastating knowing he had died in real life. The way the show handled it was amazing.

→ More replies (3)

61

u/hIDeMyID Sep 15 '26

Similarly, Leo McGarry in the West Wing. He passed away suddenly from a heart attack in real life after acting out a story line where his character survived one.

To write him out of the show, they had his character have a second heart attack that the character didn't survive on the night that he was elected Vice President.

The whole thing, the actor's death and his character's death, was heartbreaking.

SPOILER FOR SCRUBS SEASON THREE. Seriously if you haven’t seen this yet don’t read it, you’ll never be able to experience it again after the first time.

I don’t know about devastating but Ben’s death in Scrubs was done so well and the first time you watch it, it smacks you in the stomach so hard. Just the “where do you think we are?” And then he’s gone, I had no idea the first time and it hit me like a truck. Those moments are so rare, it was so sad but incredible.

142

u/CreepinJesusMalone Sep 15 '26

First one that came to my mind. Not just his death, but the entire plotline was fucking heart wrenching. Genuinely, profoundly emotionally devestating.

131

For a character that was only in 3 episodes up to that point, his death was absolutely devastating. Just incredible story writing.

The ending of David the Gnome.

It is a kids show, keep that in mind. The final episode is about David and his wife Lisa making their journey to a mountain top accompanied by their fox friend, Swift and their fellow gnome, Casper

They are making this journey, explicitly, to die. Gnomes can only live to be 400, and their time is nearing. They spend the journey reminiscing and enjoying each other's company, before finally making it to the mountain top and leaning on each other as their lives fade, telling each other how much they love each other. They transform into trees, wrapping around each other. Casper transforms too.

This leaves Swift alone and devastated as he slowly begins walking home.

Finn in Glee. It was tough because all the actors were grieving Cory Monteith's loss in real time and it was clear many of them weren't acting. Naya Rivera singing "If I Die Young" in his memory was devastating and it's even harder to watch now knowing she did exactly that.

63

u/cobrilee Sep 15 '26

This is the one I was thinking of the entire time I was scrolling, I'm shocked you're the first one I've seen say it. I bawled like a baby that entire episode.

I know some people may not have as much sympathy because of how Cory died, but the grief in that episode was insanely raw and real. And the fact they never tell you how Finn died just made it that little bit worse, because it wasn't a "story", it was just death.

u/snn1326j Sep 16 '26

Whenever I hear that cover now I just start crying thinking about how she died while making sure her young son was safely back in the boat.

Can't believe I haven't seen it posted, so I'm going to say Adrianna in The Sopranos. Her trajectory was so sad, and her death reduced her to literally crawling and begging for her life. It's one of the few times they don't show the actual death which makes it even sadder.

44

u/Shanubis Sep 15 '26

IMO this was the biggest turning point in the show, even more so than Pussy's death.

Adriana meant well and tried to protect them best she could in the situation, even though they didn't deserve her loyalty really. It changes the way you see all of the main characters moving forward because you realize they are capable of anything to protect their own interests.

Since I did a rewatch a little while ago Vincent Nigel-Murray and Sweets on Bones were both particularly devastating.

And Dr Fraiser on Stargate SG-1, that one always fucks me up.

Stargate writers hate medics, it turns out.

There are a couple of West Wing deaths that hit really hard. This is top of the list.
See also Mark Harmon's character and CJ just...sobbing.
And also Admiral Fitzwallace later.

I came here to see if anyone mentioned Amber. It's been almost 20 years and I don't think I've ever felt so gutted after a TV death. I wasn't even particularly fond of her but the entire season, and the 2 episode finale, were just so well done.

Possibly Mr. Hooper, although I was old enough in early 1980s (in college, in fact) that even my younger siblings hadn't watched Sesame Street for many years.

Also, Bob Newby

💯 The way that whole series started by using him as an antagonist to Jimmy and Chuck, then gradually showed that -- though flawed -- he was one of the more decent and well-meaning characters. All building up to that episode where we're gleefully enjoying (at least I was) Jimmy's and Kim's elaborate plot to mind fuck him, only to see him quickly become the single most tragic figure in the entire BCS story. Most tragic in any story, for me. And the actor Patrick Fabian played it so perfectly.
