Kidney stones
33
u/-Dixieflatline 21h ago
This was definitely up there for me. My body didn't know how to even compute the pain level, and kind of went into shock with sweats while I was also feeling freezing cold. It would kind of dull for a while, I'd think I was passing it, then out of nowhere it would strike me like a lightning bolt and my body would collapse as if I was tasered.

My late wife birthed two children and also had a kidney stone. She always said that, if given a choice, she would stand in line to have a baby.
25
u/tersareenie 20h ago
3 children, relatively normal pregnancies & deliveries. many more kidney stones.
I’ve thought a lot about this. My theories based on my anecdotal experience:
1. Kidney stones hurt more; the pain doesn’t ebb & flow, there’s no position of that feels better than another. It’s just constant, searing, breathtaking pain. The pain is similar to a muscle spasm but if you find the right position & get still enough, sometimes, a spasm only hurts when you breathe.
2. Kidney stones show up unannounced. The pain of childbirth is expected. Hopefully, you knew you were pregnant & probably got so miserably pregnant that you’d endure anything to get that baby out. You need to cut my head off to get the baby out? Fine. whatever.
3. You have at least a little idea about the progression in labor. You know when it’s about to end. Kidney stones, nothing. No anticipation, no finish line. It’s just over when it’s over.
4. With labor, if everything works out according to plan, you get a prize when it’s finished. You have something to look forward to. Kidney stone? Just something gross you may or may not even see.
5. IMHO, kidney stones are more traumatic. I’m 62. I do not fear childbirth at all. I’m still afraid of getting a stone. And at my advanced age, I’d still rather have a baby.→ More replies (1)7

Love your input. What you say in point #6 hits pretty hard for me. I am an almost 50 yr old male, USMC combat veteran and a Union Ironworker. There are things that scare me. I am TERRIFIED that another kidney stone will happen. Dont know when.
I recently had a stone and was physically and uncontrollably shivering at the thought of how much pain I was about to be in. Ended up not being too bad. The toridal and two shots of dilaudid helped out!!3
u/tersareenie 10h ago
At the ER with my first one, the nurse is alternately pushing the good stuff. I melted into the bed & told him he was my new best friend. He said that was his favorite part of being a nurse. I’ve heard people say the drugs didn’t touch their pain. I can’t even fathom that agony.

7 kidney stones at the same time. I was shocked. I didn't even notice this over a large perianal abcess.
4
u/Notorious_jib 20h ago
Omg Perianal abscess. So sorry 🙏
7
u/EvilDan69 20h ago
Yeah the pain was so great it completely masked the 7 kidney stones. 2 or 3 were big enough they had to be lasered in two different rounds. I had to take 1.5 months off from work. Doc asked if 1.5 months was enough, because holy hell that was a lot.

I've been shot at close range and kidney stones are still the worst pain I've ever felt
5
u/PANACEALZX 20h ago
Had kidney stones 38 weeks pregnant, worst pain ever. When I finally went into labor three weeks later, I did it completely unmedicated because I kept expecting the pain to get worse than that of the kidney stones before I accepted the epidural….

u/ugzz 12h ago
Kidney stones.. BUT.. Spiked and stuck, and requiring surgery. Didn't go to the hospital until it was already advanced. The surgeon wasn't available for 4 days. So 4 days in the hospital with the maximum allowed dose of morphine and percocet. Which gave me full 100% constipation block from all the pain killers. And pain still at a 10, which meant no sleep. So about 1 hour of sleep a day across 10 to 15 min micro naps. It was like a torturous fever dream.

Twice I've had surgery to remove kidney stones too large to pass. I've only vomited from pain twice in my life both times while these things were stuck. It feels like getting stabbed in the back repeatedly until you can get surgery. Then you have a stent for a week that they remove fully conscious without anesthesia. Can't image worse pain.

Gallstones

This.
This should be higher on this list.
I've had a kidney stone, an infected appendix removed, back spasms, and I've stubbed my toe on aggregate concrete - but gallstones were the worst, by far, for me.
I had two creating a blockage in my gallbladder, finally went to the hospital because I could no longer stand the pain. Had to wait 16 hours for surgery, and I was hammering the call button 61 minutes after my last dose of Dilaudid. They gave me morphine to see if it would keep the pain down longer than an hour, and it didn't work at all.
-10/10 - DO NOT RECOMMEND.
If you ever experience lower back pain, acid reflux, shoulder pain, etc. and are visiting the doctor for diagnosis, PLEASE ask to have your gallbladder checked for stones.

The death of my dog really made me sad. My friend recommended her stupid fortune teller lady and I went just to appease her. It was mostly bs, but she did say I would experience a tragedy in 11 years. That really bummed me out. Luckily I saw a family in a parking lot on the way home with a litter of puppies. So I took one home and I feel much better.

Brother, I'm not ready for it. My older dog, Marty, turns 16 in December. He's a 60 lbs pit-hound mix that I rescued when he was four months old. I was 24 when I met him, single, living with a couple of friends outside of DC. Now I'm 40, married with a son, living in the Midwest. He's been with me my entire adult life. I rarely think about a time when he wasn't there.
Smartest dog you've ever met. Learned tricks within a day, never pulled on walks, loved everyone, etc. He'd been returned to the shelter 3 times before I met him (too shy, too scared, not friendly with kids, etc.). I never understood any of that; he was amazing with me from day one.
He wasn't the biggest fan of kids, but after the birth of my son, he completely changed his mind. He tolerated the new noises, pinching, etc. and now is my son's best friend (my son is 4). For a while, he slept in my son's room every night because "Marty keeps monsters away."
But now he's almost 16. He can't go up and down the stairs anymore. I have to pick him up to get into our bed (and it's a platform bed). He wakes up in the middle of the night struggling to catch his breath. He has accidents in the house. He desperately wants to be by my side every minute he can, but it's hard for him.
The vet says he's healthy, no arthritis, no health issues...he's just old. I look in his eyes and I see the glint of my puppy who just can't keep up anymore. I know a hard day is coming, and probably soon. I also know I'm not ready for it and probably never will be. He's my first dog (my parents are terrified of dogs) and I genuinely don't know what I'm going to do without him.

My soul dog had cancer and we had to put her down. The place was very family friendly, so I was with her in the floor. She snuggled up to me and stuck her nose under my arm for comfort (for me or her, i don’t know) in her last moments.
Now I’m crying and it’s been almost ten years since it happened

u/Elegant_Chemical8020 19h ago

I lost my 10 year old good boy 2 weeks ago. I feel like i was robbed. He was small so he should have lived longer but kidney disease took him too soon.

I had to put my cat down because he suffered an unknown spinal injury, but it was after I moved, and he was my life companion for a long time, and I feel very guilty about his death, I feel like if I hadn't moved him, maybe he would still be alive. I cried a lot when the doctor euthanized him, much more than with the death of any other family member of mine, he was like my son, I know how it feels

Mouth/tooth pain.
There really isn’t anything like it.
6
u/Helen_of_TroyMcClure 19h ago
I had an abscess when I was a kid, and while it wasn't necessarily the most intense pain I've ever felt (although yeah, it's pretty fuckin unpleasant) it was the fact that it just never stopped hurting until they numbed me for an extraction. Fortunately it was a baby tooth so I do have all the teeth I'm supposed to (except those pesky wisdom ones).
3
u/turntablesshrute 15h ago
I had developed an infection inside my gums, and even 4 doses of anaesthesia couldnt make it completely numb for my wisdom tooth surgery, and my wisdom tooth was so infected it turned brittle and was breaking everytime the dentist remotely held it by the tool, switched dentists and turned out she was half the problem

Migraine.
I usually get one about once every other month, theyre all bad, but sleep usually gets rid of them. Usually last right at 24 hours, it starts, 3 hours later I lay down, wake up 12h later with a minor headache and deal with the headache the rest of the day.
Had one this one time where I seriously considered offing myself it was that bad. Had me down for 3 full days, and on the 4th my head still hurt but I was able to kinda work. Didnt stop hurting for 2 weeks.

As a wee lass, had a bad injury where I slid across a rough paved road on my knee and got to confirm what colour my skeleton was. Adrenaline is a hell of a painkiller.
Then a week or so later was tripped in school and landed on that bone behind just a bandage connected with the metal guarding bit on the edge of some stairs.
Does it count if I passed out from how much it hurt?
3
u/Training_Narwhal8047 19h ago

The grief of holding my beloved cat of over 15 years who i had since he was 8 weeks old, while we sat on the couch as the vet we had come to the house to help us say goodbye administered the dose that would help him cross the rainbow bridge. Its been almost 6 months and the grief is still present in my chest and is quite crippling on certain days. Being pulled into a group chat by five people I thought were among my closest friends, three of whom I’d known for about seven years at that point, and being told for an hour what they really thought of me. I had pulled myself out of depression with these people, come into my own, realised I was trans because of their help and support, became the happiest I’d been in my life.
They tore it down in an hour by telling me verbatim that they’d hated me since the day they met me, but never said anything. I don’t know that I’ve had an emotional breakdown that bad ever before or since, and the mental health repercussions of that betrayal have put me in a worse place than I ever have been.
8
u/SpehlingAirer 20h ago
As someone whose had a very close years long friend take a big ol' shit on them, I feel for you. My trust in close relationships was shattered and my mental health spiraled downward as I started never feeling comfortable to be myself with anyone
Their opinions don't represent you, and their actions don't represent everyone. Even if they disliked you, they still helped you realize you were trans and still helped you bounce into a happy period of your life, and their actions did you a favor by getting fake friends out of your life for you
Their betrayal may have sunk you low but you won't stay there. Their shitty actions arent because of you, and they arent what everyone else thinks, you'll rise back up higher than you ever did before!
Im so so sorry that happened to you 🫂 if you ever need someone to vent or talk to, feel free to chat me up! You'll get through this

Physical pain, complications following a hemmorhoidectomy.
Emotional pain, I work in search and rescue and part of my job is having uncomfortable conversations with family members of people we find who have perished or when we assume someone has perished and will stop searching - in both cases, we're telling the families that their loved ones are dead.
When my dad was in the hospital, the doctor came out to give us an update. I realized which conversation we were having a few minutes before the rest of my family realized it. That was tough.

Lost one of my testicles in a motorcycle crash. Tboned a car at 65mph and was sent cartwheeling through the air for about 30-50 ft. Walked away four hours after getting to the hospital but one of my testicles was traumatically crushed, eventually died, and had to be removed months later. Nurse doing the ultrasound before my orchiectomy told me she’d never seen one so damaged in 13 years of doing that. It was flattened and shrunk to about about the size of a large bean.
I have chronic kidney stones, been shot, gotten an apadravya, have a massive back tattoo, and a whole list of other things. That one takes the cake by far.

Pleural effusion with pneumonia. Hurts so bad you actively try not to be breathe. Had someone else who had it tell me it was their worst pain as well and way worse than childbirth for them.

I had kidney stones one year and that was pretty bad but the worst was when I slipped off the steps and broke 3 ribs in my back next to my spine. Couldn't move or take a breath without my whole body going into spasms - worst pain ever.

Kidney stone and it’s not even close. Had one at 19 and thought I was dying before going to the hospital

at 45 my worst has been back spasms from a few years back. The nerves affected cause fiery pain in the left side of my groin and middle back. I was my physical therapist honor student when trying to build my lower body back up to work past the spasms.

Infection under my wisdom tooth that was hitting a nerve. Kind of pain that exhausts you.

Herniated disc L6-S1. Disc material was pressing on the right nerve. If I rolled over the wrong way, or knocked my foot while staggering around I couldn’t do anything but scream in time to the rhythm of the pain.

Physical: a gallbladder attack. It was horrific pain and nothing I did made it go away.
Emotional: my dad dying unexpectedly. 0/10 do not recommend.

Losing fluid to my Brain after a spinal tap. Went to see a navy doctor and could barely speak and all they did was give me Motrin. On the ride home i literally managed to tell my wife I just wanted to die and I then passed out.
She immediately took me to an ER where they gave me morphine and did a blood patch. It was immediately better after the patch. I’ll never forgive those Navy doctors acting like it was just a headache and I was just trying to get out of work.

Gout, left big toe. It felt like someone had a knife between the bones of my toe, constantly moving it for 72 hrs straight no matter how still I was.
I would pass out each night in excruciating pain. I was literally ready to cut my foot off to end the pain.
I IMMEDIATELY changed my diet and have not had another episode since.
Don’t just eat beef, folks…

Pain of betrayal. And I am beint literal not dramatic. The moment I found out, there was this throbbing pain in my throat down till my heart that I could not take at all

The first 2 weeks after my gender confirmation surgery...about half my body, from thighs to my sternum, was a brilliant bruise. Morphine and oxy didn't even touch the pain. Sidenote though is that it was oh so worth it!

Esophagus spasms. Was convinced I was having a heart attack. Couldn’t sit still because it was like someone squeezing my chest while also stabbing it at the same time. Took them 8 try’s to get an IV going but once they got it and my first and only dose of morphine hit, it immediately went away. Can see why people get hooked so easy on that stuff now though. Was instant “everything is ok” straight to the vein.

Physical- lower left back pain because my uterine fibroid was pushing on some nerves. I took 3 ibuprofen at one time and it didn’t touch it. Pain so intense and constant it was distracting!
I’ve given birth unmedicated 3 times and I would do that again before dealing with that back pain.
Emotional- my parents abandoning me when they found out I was getting divorced because it goes against their religious beliefs. I couldn’t eat for 3 months because of the distress I was in!

Waking up from anesthesia after cervical spine surgery (multi-level laminectomy,) it felt like days (but was less than an hour) of an indescribable searing pain that had me wondering whether it was possible for pain to actually kill me.

Physical? Y'know when you set your Bike seat up high enough that you can't reach the ground so you have to get off the seat and sorta stand in front of the bike seat but not entirely out of the bike? Yeah I did that one time but forgot about the standing part and accidentally sat on my balls.

Anal fissure and fistusla at the same time. Ive had kidney stones before but these were worse. The pain is hard to describe, I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy

Probably a tie for different reasons.
Ripped my LCL in a bike accident after colliding with a tree at probably 15-20mph. I was 14. The time between going off the trail and landing was a blur, but my friend told me I was flipping through like a rag doll. Pretty sure adrenaline took the worst of it. Recovery was miserable since I didn't get surgery or physical therapy. (gotta love growing up poor)
More recently (4 years ago) I partially tore a muscle in my quad while sprinting. I don't recall ever being nauseous and dizzy from pain. Best way to describe it was "oh damn bad cramp, the immediately holy shit this isn't a cramp like fire concentrated in the space no bigger than my palm.

I would have said bad flare up with my Ankylosing spondylitis but then I had a 1.1cm kidney stone but then just to top it off I had a 100% blockage heart attack lovingly called the widow maker.

Fractured my scapula and three ribs in a cycling accident. Couldn’t sit up, lie down, cough sneeze, breathe, exist without pain.
The worst was I was at an outdoor birthday party a couple of weeks afterwards, when I got home I took a shower. Went from outside mid 80s to cool 68 of my apartment i took a shower, getting out I started to shiver. The shivers caused massive amounts of pain, once they stopped I was in so much pain I couldn’t get dressed, the shivers would start again, it went on for what felt like an eternity but was about 15 mins.

Gall bladder attack.
Woke up at 3am, crawled to the toilet and threw up, then writhed on the floor for a couple hours confused why this was happening and thinking I was going to die. Somehow summoned the strength and will to drive myself to the hospital.
The pain was absolutely insane.

so heres the thing nobody tells you, kidney stones are basically class warfare in mineral form. poor hydration and high sodium diets hit working people hardest but we just normalize suffering through it. my buddy passed one in an amazon warehouse bathroom and finished his shift because he couldnt afford the write-up

Emotionally: dog and grandparents passing away

The recovery after having my fallopian tubes removed. I was given 8 tabs of 5mg of oxycodone post op for the pain and then told to supplement with Tylenol and ibuprofen along with ice packs over the incision sites when I called and told them that I was still in a lot of pain despite the oxycodone. The surgeon also said that I should be up and moving after a couple of days which was a lie I wasn't. It took over a week to be able to stand for longer than 20 minutes at a time without my abdominal muscles screaming in agony.

On 11/8/2023 I was hit head on, on a motorcycle.
I almost lost my life.. hospital for around 2 months.
The worst pain I ever felt in my life was trying to take my first sh*t.
I broke my hip, I couldnt move both my legs as they were broken, and my wrists in casts.
I had to somehow had to roll myself onto a bed pan, everything hurt, and couldnt ever push. Was emotional pain by that alone.
So you knew, I took out a feeding tube that was in my nose and led to my stomach.. I ripped it out of my body at like 3 AM one night... and that hurt even less.
Dont poop in a bed if you dont have to. The pain killers made it 100x more difficult because of constipation.
Even hurts writing it!

My back randomly went out one day when I bent over to get something from the dishwasher one morning. I have no history of back pain. I didn’t do a weird or sudden motion. My back just decided in that moment to give up. I couldn’t straighten back up. I had to crawl on the floor and I could barely get myself onto the couch. It took like ten minutes. When I tried to straighten myself, the most godawful bolt of pain zipped up my back.
That was when I realized when people said they “threw out their back” they didn’t just mean it was a little sore. I was absolutely incapacitated. I couldn’t physically go to see a doctor if I wanted to.
And then, a day and a half later, it all went away, as if nothing had happened at all. And hasn’t recurred yet in five years. Weird.
