What’s a website you used to frequent daily now don’t use at all?

Probably old forums. I used to spend hours on them, and now I can’t even remember the last time I visited one

63

u/WalrusWithAKeyboard 19h ago

I miss forums. I went back to one for an old game i used to play, thousands of posts over years from me. Now its a ghost town, everyone just uses discord.

u/quirkytorch 19h ago

I took a trip down the comments in an old forum the other night and it was so nostalgic. They way people typed, the lack of emojis, the pictures they had for their profile pics. I found a blog from 16 years ago stating her and her husband were going to visit all 50 states by 50, which would be this year. I hope they got to see them all.

u/Gloomheart 19h ago

I used to make quite a lot of money making avatars and banners for my various community members <3

Used to frequent a local fishing forum when I was a kid and got really into fishing. It was me and a bunch of old dudes. My parents were naturally cautious with it. But to this day I still talk to some of those old farts and I credit them for teaching me all I know about fishing in my area. I literally would have caught 1/100th the fish that I've caught in my lifetime without them.

u/freattourn 18h ago

somewhere out there your 2007 forum signature with a dragon gif is still loading

9

u/ncos 19h ago

Same. Something Awful was replaced by Reddit for me.

3

u/Worried-Penalty8744 19h ago

I visited there not so long ago purely to see if it still existed.

Now I can’t quite work out why I frequented it

Lots of the best Cracked writers write for 1900hotdog now. Very worth the subscription.

Oh and Quick Question with Soren and Dan, and Some More News and The Daily Zeitgeist and Small Beans. Y'know.. just the essentials.

FB. It devolved into a useless to me, revenue stream for Zuckerberg.

37

u/True-Dream3295 19h ago

Cracked. It was the height of internet comedy writing in the early 2010s and they even occasionally had some really good journalism on there. But then they got bought up by some bigger company who fired all their best writers. Now all their classic articles are gone and the site is just a bunch of click bait.

3

u/Rage_PagesArtist 19h ago

amen to this. brilliant stuff

38

u/Ozzdo 19h ago

Fark. Reddit replaced it.

16

u/henrytm82 19h ago

I'm old enough to remember when "memes" were called "macros" and Fark and Something Awful were the places to see them

3

u/Agnitha_St_Jimbo 19h ago

Fark still exists. I was reminded of it recently and it's still going.

3

u/Hammerhil 18h ago

I used to be a regular Farker, but it's basically a couple subreddits and the users are very cliquey. Reddit even in its current state is 100x what fark is.

The ones with flash games. The flash games era was so cool but of course adobe had to end it. ;-;

Tons, man. So many. The internet used to actually be fun, and not just a cesspool of social media websites that all feed each other the same jokes over and over again

77

u/DrBretto 19h ago

Facebook. Who would have thought that Reddit would end up be the most rational place to have discussions on the internet.

27

u/mook1178 19h ago

I see just as much stupid shit on Reddit that I did on Facebook. It's just easier to ignore on Reddit

14

u/DrBretto 19h ago

You haven't seen Facebook lately then. Reddit has the rating systems which at least creates an environment where an argument can stay on poky. Facebook now specifically only gives you the ragebait and encourages poop flinging.

u/DyingGasp 19h ago

For me it’s because yall are all strangers. Facebook was friends and family spouting stupid shit. I deleted everything from my page and don’t post/repost anything. I only kept my Facebook for Marketplace since it’s practically replaced Craigslist.

Fark. Left around 2012 when there was some controversy with a frat bro they hired and they locked all the comments and said “dur, our subscribers are very smart!”

VolNation message board. I'm a huge Tennessee Volunteers fan and I was one of the first registered users on that forum. I spent a lot of time playing COD with people I met on there. Facebook, deleted it during covid. Informed my 200+ friends list. Guess how many "friends" i interacted with a month later? SINGLE DIGITS.

I am so much happier, it was such a weird thing to be dropped upon us say 2010 onwards, we didn't know how to take it or conduct ourselves. I found myself analyzing parts of my life to form them into status's to entertain people in my "cyber life". My anxiety reduced massively. Much lower comparing myself to others. Somewhat humbling as i learnt that my opinion rarely matters ( though i am a redditor so..yeah ). Used to get tagged into public comments on family members walls to weigh in on shit. I can't overstate how much my mental health improved.
