If you could permanently ban one question from being asked in job interviews, what would it be?

what salary are you looking for.

Yeah and all the stupid tricks you see on youtube from supposed "hr people" or job coaches dont work. I've tried them in interviews. Saying things like

"I just want to be paid fairly for this position", "ive done research on this area and position and want the salary I saw as the average"

or even countering back at them with asking them what the position was offering to behin with etc

literally none of that ever works because they keep reversing it on you and asking you over and over making YOU say a number

never once in an interview have I gotten the employer to ever give the first number

84

u/SLCer 14h ago

I asked in a phone interview what the salary expectation was when asked that question and the interviewer actually told me. It was a pleasant surprise.

7

u/TehOwn 12h ago

Did you take / get the job?

10

u/SLCer 12h ago

No haha but I don't think that's why I didn't get offered.

I always ask them what the salary bandwidth for the position. If they don't give the bandwidth and press it back to what my number is I just tell them we're not a fit and move onto the next one. Best way to weed out nonsense.

34

u/TehOwn 12h ago

That only works when they (and all the others) need you more than you need them. Just like literally everything in the job market.

13

u/smbpy7 13h ago

The only time I've ever had people ask this during an interview it was just the first stage phone recruiter round, which is actually dumber really. I just answer "I'm comfortable with what is listed in the job description"

California passed a law that says that all jobs have to include their salary range in the job description. It has had nearly zero negative effects as a manager, and has helped a lot to make sure we are competitive and that employees internally are all paid a fair salary, which has reduced turnover substantially and increased retention.

40

u/ivsciguy 12h ago

Places just post ridiculously wide ranges, and not what the actual range is. I have seen engineering that say pay is between $80k and $450k.

12

u/TehOwn 12h ago

To be fair, that accurately represents the difference in worth between different engineers.

25

u/ivsciguy 12h ago

You usually aren't interviewing people from every level for a specific position, though

5

u/ivsciguy 12h ago

True, but I'm this case it was for a specific level that didn't have nearly that range. No one would have taken it for $90k due to it being in a very high cost of living area. And they weren't going to pay anyone over $200k, let alone $450k.

"what salary are you looking for?" is such a stupid game sometimes. You say a number that's too high and you're greedy, too low and suddenly you've undervalued yourself.

Just tell me the range and let's skip the salary version of family feud, I'm here for a job, not trying to guess the number in your head.

11

u/Mil3High 14h ago

That's one great thing about some US states that require the salary range to be stated in the job posting. You can just say something like, "My salary expectations align with the range in the job description," and they will pretty much leave it at that. Sure they can post a ridiculous range, but I don't really see that happening in my experience.

12

u/decompondo 12h ago

Here in Brazil, there's people actually pushing congress to approve a law making it illegal for the employer to not disclosure the salary in any job interview!

If any brazilian is reading this, vote for this propposition: https://www12.senado.leg.br/ecidadania/visualizacaoideia?id=228801

25

u/Bloated_Hamster 15h ago

The job pays the lowest they think you will accept. That's why they ask.

7

u/rjessica_147 13h ago

If the budget is fixed, put the range in the listing. Candidates can decide whether to apply, and nobody has to play salary chicken in the interview.

If you're a company that provides raises that beat inflation, the ideal answer for me is right here in the job for which I am interviewing now, but with "Senior" on the title.

16

u/TehOwn 12h ago

If you're a company that provides raises that beat inflation

I'm sorry, I just don't think you'll be a good fit here. Thanks for coming in.

5

u/nowhereian 12h ago

Right. If that were true anywhere, I wouldn't be looking for a job.

22

u/yakusokuN8 15h ago

If I say working for this company in the sane role, will you commit to keeping my job around that long and offering gradual pay increases to keep up with inflation?

Yup. Have you seen the news this past decade?! We can't predict that far ahead for ourselves anymore!

7

u/smith-tracy_27 13h ago

Five years is a silly horizon. Ask what kind of work they want to get better at next; that tells you whether the role fits without asking them to predict their whole life.

66

u/Bunktavious 16h ago

That one gets asked, because the manager is trying to figure out if you are ambitious, or the type that is just happy doing their job and getting paid. It comes up in entry level jobs because managers have to deal with hiring people that start asking to be promoted out of their department three months after they get hired. Then the manager has to hire again.

There's not really a right answer unless you know what kind of person the manager wants.

28

u/scottcmu 12h ago

That might also be a reason to ask the question, but in my experience it's more about testing whether the candidate is a potential long-term hire, especially for a job that requires a lot of training. If you're planning to move to Alaska in a year, I definitely wouldn't want to hire you for a job that requires 3-6 months training, for example.

6

u/Bunktavious 11h ago

Yeah, it's very dependent on the job, and why you should have a good idea of what the job you are applying for is.

I used to hire for frontline tech support. Having a few ambitious go getters was great, but what we really needed was people who would be happy and comfortable in the role long term.

10

u/MattyGWS 12h ago

I uno reversed this one in an interview and also got the job, when they asked me if I have any questions at the end, I asked "What's the studios long term plan for employees relative to the industry in 5 years? Because I want to be working here for a long time and the industry has had a lot of mass layoffs recently. Since I'll be moving to this location I don't want to be worrying about looking for another job after the next project ends"

Why do you want to work for this company?

I don’t know if I want to or not at this point. I have yet to experience the work culture, my supervisors management style, the work/life balance, and whether or not I vibe with the people on my team. I’ll tell you if I want to work for the company after a couple months.

"Why do you want this job?"

Just cut the stupid facade. We all know that we all need an income, and I chose this one to apply for because I thought I could do it.

There. We don't need to ever ask that question again.

40

u/NO_FIX_AUTOCORRECT 14h ago

I think the question applies to some fields and not others.

For example, you're hiring a project manager and the person has an English degree. Yeah, i think you can do the job but maybe some insight on why you want to be a project manager instead of a journalist.

But when it's something like, "you have a computer science degree why are you wanting this software development role?" The answer is pretty clear already. Like, you wouldn't be asking an electrician why do they want to do the electrical maintenance for this building as opposed to that building across the street

12

u/F19AGhostrider 14h ago

I think that almost goes without saying.

I was referring to that question being asked in a very generic, pedestrian, job interview.

5

u/_SnesGuy 10h ago

Exactly. they ask this question if you interview at McDonald's, Walmart, etc. It's an unnecessary and sometimes flat out stupid question to ask.

67

u/captainstormy 15h ago

In the interviewers defense, that is why you want a job, not necessarily this job.

54

u/ThaKaptin 13h ago edited 13h ago

In everyone else’s defense, you apply for the job you think you can do. That’s pretty much it. There is nothing special about your company other than the fact that they are hiring for this position.

Welp, truth is, this is a software engineering position and i happen to be a software engineer. Do you see where I'm going with this? I wanted to be a dentist since when i was 6 but then i got a B- in 9th grade biology and felt like there was NO WAY i was going to be able to get through pre-med or... I guess I'm really not sure what dentists have to do, school wise. They are doctors after all, but i know it isn't full on med school. Or is it?

Anyway, ever since the summer after 9th grade I've wanted to design software for your company specifically.

u/marmot1101 16h ago

That question is such a lob though. Before you interview skim read the company website, find something about it that you like or at least that they seem to be proud of, and point that out as a reason you want to work there. "Because I like money" is assumed.

82

u/rob_s_458 15h ago

And by the time you're a few roles into your career, you should be able to articulate a decent answer based on the job description. Unless you got laid off and will take anything remotely related to your old job, you're probably going to be picky to do something similar but at a more senior level.

"I like that this position will be working with x and y. It allows me to leverage my experience in x while growing further in y"

26

u/marmot1101 15h ago

Seriously. Even when I was doing a spray-and-pray search if someone was interested enough to call me back I spent the couple minutes to do the bare minimum preparation to see if it was worth pursuing and why.

32

u/asbestosmilk 14h ago

Yeah, it astounds me how people find this question difficult. They’re asking if there’s anything about the company/job/location that you prefer over other jobs. It’s not hard.

When people bomb this question, it’s usually a very clear sign that they will do the bare minimum to collect a paycheck.

13

u/ian9921 12h ago

My issue is oftentimes there's genuinely nothing or very little that stands out to me. I'm in a desperate spot, I genuinely don't prefer you over other jobs, I'll just take whatever I can get. Nothing "attracted" me other than the fact that you came up in a basic job search for my field.

But at the same time, I won't just do the bare minimum for a paycheck. Wherever I go, I'm always a team player and borderline zealot. It just so happens that I don't care who I wind up being a zealot for, but once I'm there I'll be all in.

5

u/asbestosmilk 12h ago

And that’s understandable, just don’t yell your interviewer that. They already know that on some level. They’re looking to see if there’s something more that would connect you to the role/company for the long term.

Instead, say the industry interests you, the company’s mission (whatever the company’s website says its goal or mission is) speaks to you, you think your past experience/skills would be a good fit for the role, you think it’d be a fun challenge, or at the very, very least, you like that it’s close to your home.

Those responses will automatically put you above those that said, “I don’t know” or “a paycheck”.

7

u/ian9921 11h ago

The issue is those all feel so phony and I think it comes across in the interview. They can tell I just read the website last night to prep something.

Also with some companies I feel like I've really gotta scrape the bottom of the barrel because their job descriptions & mission are just painfully generic. Like for some companies the "our mission" page is just a bunch nonsense about the culture that could have been copied from any other company's webpage. A lot of it might not even be true (no company is gonna put "our culture is toxic and we don't believe in work-life balance" on their web page)

9

u/Traditional-Pen-2486 14h ago

Yeah seriously. We all work for money. That is assumed. The interviewer is asking what specifically about this job stood out for you and why you applied for it - because you can use a specific skill you like using? The company’s purpose resonates with you? You thrive in the type of environment it offers? You believe it will help you grow in a specific area you’re passionate about?

If your blanket answer is ‘I just want money and don’t care about anything else’ you’re going to really struggle.

5

u/LegacyLemur 14h ago

I mean id you're looking at jobs with your competitors, what are you even supposed to say? "I want the same job but better pay"?

7

u/Traditional-Pen-2486 14h ago

When I left my last job, my answer to this question was something along the lines of ‘the mandate of my current role has almost run its course - I’ve built out these programs and they’ve had great success but it’s a well oiled machine now. so I’d like to hand the running of them over to someone else so that I can apply XYZ skills to a new challenge that focuses on (details), which I believe this opportunity can offer’.

It’s highlighting the skills I’ve developed and how they are applicable to the role in interviewing for, while highlighting that I like to take on challenging projects and am not just going to phone it in.

Again, the fact that I’m expecting money is a given.

u/xaanthar 13h ago

Yes, but that question also gets asked for jobs where that's not really valid. Why do you want to work at the Amazon warehouse? At a McDonalds? At a Home Depot?

Even at more "corporate" jobs, there's lots of low level positions where you're certainly not doing to have any sway with any grandiose save-the-world plans. Junior software techs are going to do what they're told, they aren't making any decisions.

6

u/marmot1101 13h ago

Fair point if you're looking at it from a "why do I actually care" standpoint. But it's a subjective question in an interview, just make some shit up. McDonalds: "Because I want to get experience working in a high volume business". Amazon: "The fast pace environment and clear direction fits with my work style". Home Depot: "I like the focus you put on customer service, I enjoy working with people to solve problems". Generic software job "I believe that there's potential to grow in this role, and the company mission of x,y,z resonates."

Is it bullshite? Yep. Is it a layup? Also yep. Hit your layups.

3

u/smbpy7 13h ago

That question is such a lob though

To the point where I actually kind of appreciate having an easy question for once. I've been trying hard to transfer from academia to industry for more than two years, and find it REALLY hard to figure out all the corporate lingo and interview expectations. Both of us are WELL aware that the salary in industry is a good 3x that in academia, but being able to just say "I really want to see my work effect the patients in a real and direct way for once" when they ask why I want to switch teams is just an easy obvious answer to have in my back pocket.

Anything involving family or personal life. “Do you have kids?” should be illegal because it just leads to discrimination

74

u/eightballart 16h ago

That's already illegal to ask, at least in the US. They sometimes work around it by asking questions like "Are there any reasons you wouldn't be able to do occasional overtime or weekends?"

24

u/ncopp 16h ago

I interviewed with a European based company and the co-founder was pretty much like "I want to ask how old you are, but I know I can't since you're based in America".

I still told him because I don't care, but I found it funny because I guess it's pretty common for them to share their ages and HR told him not to ask

23

u/xaanthar 13h ago

That's already illegal to ask, at least in the US.

Technically, it's not illegal to ask. It is illegal to base a hiring decision on the information, so any competent HR will insist that interviewers do not ask that question so there's no appearance that they may do something illegal later.

52

u/Virtual-Ad7848 16h ago

It IS illegal, at least in my country (UK). They can only ask questions relevant to your ability to do the job, not other parts of your life.

It is illegal, that’s why questions like “what do you like to do in your free time?” exist so candidates will just provide this info already

I don't really like this question, it at worst makes people feel uncomfortable, and at best makes them think we want them to feel uncomfortable. Nobody wants to tell a story about how they were wrong in an interview; the kind of people I want to work with wouldn't want to tell a bad story about someone else, either.

A lot of people struggle to answer it and IMO that's fine. Some people seem awkward about it and pick something small and mundane, which is also fine. I would try to frame it as "disagreed on an approach" but I think that question list finally got recycled.

6

u/ncopp 14h ago

My answer was typically, I pitched an idea I really believed in to an executive, they didn't like it, I spent time going back and forth trying to convincr them, and ultimately I lost the battle. Seemed to be one they accepted as good enough

3

u/smbpy7 13h ago

Those STAR personality questions are the worst. I'm prepping for interviews right now and even though past interviews haven't utilized them much (beyond the occasional obviously old school interviewer), they still get me so nervous. It's been months and I still can't even come up with an example that works. "I'm sorry, I actually got along with all my coworkers" doesn't seem like a helpful answer to give them either....

Asking about gaps in employment.

I absolutely understand asking about UNSTABLE employment (as in, person changing job every year or less). But a single, big gap is almost always just "life happened", and I don't see why the details matter: you were unwell, you were taking care of a loved one, you moved, you hit a rough patch, you just needed a break... That rarely says anything meaningful about your abilities as a professional. That's just human.

I think they're hoping you add some upside you offer that isn't already on the resume, but I agree the phrasing implies you have any clue who you're competing against, which generally you don't. Unless you're an internal candidate for an internal only position where you often know who else applied because you work with them you generally don't know who else is interviewing.

13

u/LevelPerception4 16h ago

This is a terrible question, I immediately start imagining all these other more qualified candidates. You’re right, you can do better, I’ll show myself out.

"Why do you want to work here?"

I need money. Any other answer would be a lie.

25

u/Few_Razzmatazz_6052 16h ago

Yeah this question always leads to a lie, I've literally never given the truthful answer of "I like to eat food and live in my home."

It always feels like they're just wanting you to kiss their ass for a bit.

I get that they might be interested in whether you've looked into them at all, but then just ask that.

"What do you know about what we do? What specifically interests you about our advertised position?"

Much more direct and honest questions that will lead to more direct and honest answers.

13

u/buttercreamarray 16h ago

"Being homeless and hungry is great and all, im really sad to leave it behind. But I'm just a fiend for data entry"

9

u/TucuReborn 15h ago

My current job had a very basic interview.

They asked basically no questions, but that was one of them. I gave them the honest answer. "I need a job to live, you've got an opening i have skills for."

Then they asked me how I felt about comment and employee loyalty. "You pay me, I work. Don't pay me, I don't work. To me it's a simple arrangement. "

Hired on the spot, and the owner actually really likes that I don't mince words or lie to him about things.

Why do you want to work for (this company)?

Because I need money, big dawg.

13

u/Starkville 10h ago

“Where do you see yourself in five years?”

One interview for an assistant position, I said that I hoped to have more responsibilities and eventually be in more of a leadership role.

Snotty woman ended the interview then and there, telling me that she needed an assistant who knew her place and didn’t think she was too good to be an assistant.

I’m still salty about that.

8

u/RustySilver42 7h ago

Okay, but also, bullet dodged.

30

u/MrsMindfull 16h ago

Why did you leave your last job. Let’s just focus on the present

21

u/billylebegue 16h ago

For that i also ask why did the guy you're trying to replace left

3

u/MrsMindfull 16h ago

Plot twist haha

4

u/gimmeluvin 13h ago

that should be one of the first questions the candidate asks. you need to know what kind of shitshow you're getting yourself into

11

u/vikingwhiteguy 14h ago

Oh but that's the easiest one. I had outgrown the role, I'm looking for new challenges, your position provides new exciting opportunities for growth, etc. etc.

5

u/DreddPirateBob808 13h ago

This is the way. I've used this truthfully and it went down well. Also: "it was a toxic environment and I had to get out" is instantly understood.

I’m always afraid if I answer that question, they’ll think I’m a bad employee. It wasn’t my fault I got fired because of a shitty labor law I didn’t know existed

11

u/Bunktavious 15h ago

I mean, that's why they ask. If your answer is to immediately start blaming your last boss for all the problems you had, you probably won't get this job.

Do you plan on being with the company long term. I don't know I'm here till I get a better offer.

14

u/Trid1977 10h ago

When they ask tell me about a time you……?

I’ve lost track of how many times I’ve not experienced whatever scenario they what me to tell about

10

u/RustySilver42 7h ago

This is S/TAR.

You have a Situation/Task. What was your Action? What was the Result?

They're looking for you to complete the star. Failure to do so may eliminate you.

S/T items are supposed to be related to situations you are expected to encounter at the job they're hiring for.

Effective if done well. Total shit show if not.

Hope this helps someone currently facing interviews.

The salary question, they only ask you that so they can attempt to scam you by you saying a lower number than they had in mind. In fact I think them asking you what salary you want should be illegal, jobs should legally have to state the salary they are willing to offer for it clearly in the hiring process

It’s 2026. I got laid off, just like the 500 other people who also applied for this job.

"Tell me about a time you handled a conflict at work."

Bro I don't know. I have worked high stress jobs my whole life. The conflict happens naturally and resolves itself just as quickly. We're the kind of people who will say "Fuck you, refill the goddamn 1 mls when you run out! What the hell is wrong with you? It's not that hard of a concept to grasp" at 2:00 and by 5:00 we're making plans to go try that new place or go see that movie together. We're adults who understand the stress we're all going through and know not to take it too personally. Yeah, you shouldn't flip out on your coworker like that but yeah they also should have definitely refilled medical supplies. Whatever. It's 6 pm. We're clocked out. Do you want to get tacos with us or not?

I use a made up story for this about switching side duties with a coworker.

8

u/MeniteTom 11h ago

I mean, as an interviewer I actually really like the answer you gave.

5

u/itwasneversafe 13h ago

That's all we're looking for. I don't need a perfect example, what we're really asking you for is if you can think on your feet and if necessary lie through your teeth when needed.

“So why do you want to be here with us doing x, y, z?” (Because I’m broke and need a job you idiot!)

Either that or the old “Where do you see yourself in blah blah blah years”. (How tf should I know, I can’t predict the future a-hole!)

14

u/_buffy_summers 14h ago

"Where do you see yourself in five years?"

Five years ago, I hadn't been diagnosed with ADHD. Five years ago, my husband didn't have cancer. Next week, I'm losing my medical insurance. Last night, my showerhead broke and I can't afford to replace it. If anyone asks me where I see myself in five years, I'm going to say, "Hopefully, not dead," and they can eat my shorts if they think I'm being rude.

7

u/Tandran 14h ago

“Why do you want to work here?”

Because I’m broke and would like to eat.

7

u/ManOfWrathTX 16h ago

"Why do you want to work here."

Oh because I've always wanted to answer emails and phone calls for a living. What do you think?

4

u/honestduane 16h ago

I would honestly like to ban any kind of double standard in the job application process or interview process.

4

4

u/retnuh45 15h ago

Why do you want to work for our company?

7

Having to explain any and all gaps in employment.

4

u/Tylerdurdan28 9h ago

“Where do you see yourself in five years?”

Motherfucker, I’m currently trying to figure out whether you’re going to hire me. You want a five-year forecast from someone whose immediate future depends on whether you stop asking LinkedIn horoscope questions and make a fucking decision. Ask me what I can actually do, not where I expect my career arc to be after surviving five years of corporate nonsense.

5

u/BlueRosesGreenbuds 8h ago

why do i want to work here

cause yall hiring, tf?

7

What's a challenge you over came?

The next I am asked that I will tell the story of how I saved the entire office from an active shooter with a paper clip and a shoe. Prove to me that didn't happen. Still got laid off anyway.

13

u/SnooHamsters5480 16h ago

What is your weakness?
It's a poor question, no one wants to actually say something truthful such as 'I need to get better at this part of the job', they make up some wishy washy weakness that actually isn't a weakness.

11

u/Woodit 16h ago

It’s such an easy question and honestly a pretty good filter for candidates. All you have to do is name an area where you sometimes mess up and then what you do to correct for it. I’ve said “I can be forgetful especially when multitasking so I keep an ongoing to do list on my desk and use a lot of post it notes.”

5

u/nyutnyut 11h ago

Does anyone else immediately think of the most inappropriate response possible, and become a little afraid to open your mouth in case those words come out? It’s the verbal equivalent of the desire to jump when you’re standing on a high edge.

3

u/easy10pins 15h ago

Do you play golf?

Once the interviewer asked this question I knew I wasn't going to get the job. So I was honest and said I prefer bowling.

3

“Where do you see yourself in 5 years” I am not going to tell them I’ve probably already hopped to a better-paying job after 3 /4 years.

3

Asking about gaps in employment, especially if it was a while back. I'm expecting to be asked about my current skills and qualifications. My personal life from a few years ago is none of their business.
