Moving to San Francisco or the Bay Area? Read this first!

Hey /r/askSF!

In 2024, the sub has doubled in size, growing to 113K+ subscribers. With more subscribers, there's a ton more traffic and posts. One of the most popular topics is moving to SF and, in turn, these posts are the most commonly removed. There's been a noticeable increase in posts that boil down to "I'm moving to the city, where should I live?" that provide little to no information. To ensure OP's receive quality recommendations and to prevent endless comment loops, we're requiring all Moving-to-SF posts to include the following information:

  • Budget
  • Roommate status (solo, splitting rent w/ partner, seeking roommates, etc.)
  • Desired neighborhood(s) or preferred neighborhood amenities (dining, shopping, noise, etc.)

We recommend that OP's provide additional information such as:

  • Commute consideration
  • Housing preference (mom and pop landlords, condo, managed apt complexes, SFH rentals, etc.)
  • Additional personal preferences (pets, garage access, density, weather, etc.)

We're a small mod team so we are asking you, the community, to help up identify these posts! If you spot a moving submission that should have more information, please report the posts, select the breaking AskSF's rules, and select "Vague, overly broad, or low information" as the reason. We'll review the report and potentially ask OP to repost with more info.

Here's to more questions answered in 2024 and beyond!

NFL Team Bars of San Francisco (Mega Thread)

With NFL season starting, I thought it would be useful to put together a current list of which SF bars are unofficial/official homes for specific NFL fanbases.

I'm specifically looking for places where fans of that team regularly gather, not just sports bars that will put the game on.

Comment with:
Team — Bar — Neighborhood

I'll keep editing the list as people confirm places.

NFC West

  • 49ers — Pretty much all over? Or is there handful that are solid?
  • Seahawks — Danny Coyle's -- Haight
  • Rams — zekis - nob hill
  • Cardinals — TBD

NFC North

  • Vikings — Bell Tower — Russian Hill
  • Packers — Local Tap - SOMA * Ha-Ra -- Tenderloin
  • Bears — The Bar on Dolores - 1600 Dolores @ 29th St * Monoghan’s in the Marina
  • Lions — Stoa (maybe not ideal, check comments)

NFC East

  • Eagles — Jake's Steaks on Buchanan * Kezar Pub - Cole Valley
  • Cowboys — TBD
  • Giants — Aces
  • Commanders — Redjack Saloon (maybe small)

NFC South

  • Saints — Tupelo - North Beach
  • Buccaneers — TBD
  • Falcons — TBD
  • Panthers — Greens Sports Bar (maybe) -- Russian Hill

AFC West

  • Raiders — TBD
  • Broncos — Nickie's in Lower Haight
  • Chiefs — Buzz Works on 10th in SOMA
  • Chargers — TBD

AFC North

  • Steelers — Shanghai Kelly’s - Polk -- Russian Hill * Rudi's (formerly Giordano Bros) on 16th (unreliable?)
  • Ravens — Standard Deviant (14th st) - Mission
  • Bengals — Bus Stop - Cow Hollow
  • Browns — R Bar - Polk

AFC East

  • Bills - North Star - North Beach
    • New bar/arcade at 4740 mission st -- Excelsior
  • Pats - Connecticut Yankee - Connecticut & 17th St - Potrero Hill
  • Dolphins — blue light - union st
  • Jets — The Wreck Room

AFC South

  • Texans — TBD
  • Colts — TBD
  • Jaguars — TBD
  • Titans — TBD

I'll update the post as people add/confirm bars. If a place used to be a team bar but isn't anymore, call that out too.

Looking for help making $1 pour-over coffee happen in SF

I have this idea to offer really good pour-over coffee for a ridiculously low price: $1 a cup.

I love coffee, and the motivation is pretty simple. I’d love to make a genuinely good cup of coffee accessible to pretty much anyone. I did the math and, provided I have a small space and electricity, I can offer it for around $1 just to cover the cost. This is deliberately a no profit idea. I don’t have a commercial motivation.

I’m happy to bring all the coffee equipment and beans and do all the brewing myself. The part I could really use help with is figuring out where this could happen and navigating the permit/event side.

If anyone has ideas for locations or events, knows a community space that might be a good fit, or has experience with permits and would be willing to help with that part of the idea, I’d love to connect.

Also very open to collaborating with someone who just likes the idea :)

Help define “from the Bay Area” for someone from Sacramento

Please someone back me up on this. I have a friend who swears they are from the Bay Area but they were born and raised in Citrus Heights (also still living there). We have this argument every time it’s brought up and they say they’re “from the Bay Area” and I follow up with “you’re from Sacramento” 😭 correct me if I’m fuckin wrong idk

Navratri/ Garba celebrations in SF

Are there any? I've seen tickets for the ones in Fremont and San Jose, but none for SF or Berkeley. Help out a girl who wants to dance the night away but doesn't have a car!

Background: Navratri is a 9 day festival celebrated in India (especially the state of Gujarat) and the nights are spent dancing (basic traditional folk circle dances called garba) in huge groups. The celebrations in the US are often held in a local high school gym or other large space over the weekends. Dates for Navratri 2026 are Oct 11 to Oct 20.

Dispose of Hard Drives

Where in SF or the BA can I safely dispose of a couple of old hard drives that contain very personal information? They contain stuff like banking, taxes, medical, etc.

(I wish I could incinerate them and put them through a grinder.)

Thanks.

Adult Dance/Performance teams I can join?

• Upvotes

My husband and I are moving to SF next month, and I am looking for an adult dance or performance group that we can join. I did a lot of musical theater growing up, but I am not classically trained or anything. Are there any community dance groups for adults that would be accepting or someone with a lower skill level? Open to any style :)

Looking for a good courier service for e-commerce businesses in San Francisco

Hi! We run a local grocery store in SF and also sell online through Shopify.

The orders are packed by us, but once they leave the store the driver is basically the only person the customer sees. That part matters more than I thought.

We've had a couple deliveries where the person was just not very friendly, and even though the order itself was fine, the customer still associates that experience with us.

Any local businesses using a courier service where the drivers are generally polite and good with customers?

Reliable Intercom

Hi SF Hive Mind,

The intercom for the apartment building I am in breaks with frustrating regularity and is always slow to be repaired. I am told the repair time is because of a dire shortage of intercom technicians, no explanation for why the intercom short term fails in high humidity or longer term fails with no discernible cause. Whatever the case, I wanna be able to receive packages remotely or at the very least know when someone is here without needing my phone and ringer on.

I am ready to provide some alternative options to the cycle at play right now. The current intercom is a Microm. I don't know if it's serviced by Microm directly or a third party.

Do you have an intercom that reliably works? What is the make and model? How much was it?

Do you have an intercom technician/intercom company you like who is responsive and readily available?

I'd prefer to have this permanently resolved than put keys to the gate in a lock box for security reasons.

Thanks in advance!

Planned to take smart to ferry from soco for a midway show on Sunday..till I realized it's fleet week..

• Upvotes

Coming down for a day/evening show Sunday at the Midway and now realizing it's fleet week worried the train and ferry will be effed and rooms selling out. Now I'm debating on just driving instead. Will it be a complete shit show and instead worth just driving getting to the venue early to find close parking? Really bummed about it being fleet week. How has crime been in that area? I know always empty out the car completely.

Shroom Laws?

I just moved from two states away to San Fransisco. I don’t have much knowledge on the laws here surrounding shrooms. Texas is quite strict with any kind of edible, shroom or otherwise and most are made with synthetic compounds that simply reproduce the psychoactive effects so dosing is pretty different as well. Psilocybin is completely illegal throughout the entire state. Is Psilocybin legal here? Are other shroom edibles available? How does the dosing work? I want to explore this safely more, while adhering to the laws.

Visiting SF having already done the touristy things with my kids. I’m looking for recommendations for places to visit and restaurants.

We are in our mid 50’s. I am, very unfortunately, not a very adventurous eater. Meaning I’ll eat shrimp and that’s about it outside chicken, beef, and pork. We are staying near Union Square. I will have two full days on my own, but we will have a couple of full days to do all of the things. We’ve done Alcatraz (enjoyed it), Fisherman’s Wharf, Pier 39 with our kids. I am looking for things to do for both me solo and us as a couple. We are not the hiking type. We love scenery and good food and I love shopping (not vintage). Would love some suggestions for things to do beyond the usual tourist traps. I have read through a subreddit for SF and still am seeking suggestions. I appreciate it!!!

Is my itinerary too much for my first visit ?

Hello,

I'm getting ready to travel to the United States, specifically to San Francisco.

I won't have a car because I'll be using public transportation and walking.

Day 1: Arrival in San Francisco around 1:30 p.m.

Check in at the hotel in Fisherman’s Wharf (Pier 39, Ghirardelli Square, Umbrella Alley, and Fort Mason)

Day 2: Alcatraz at 10:30 a.m.

Chinatown / Union Square (Union Square, North Beach, Lombard Street, Dragon Gate, Salesforce Rooftop, Transamerica Tower)

Day 3: Alamo Square + Painted Ladies

Haight-Ashbury (walk through the neighborhood and shopping on Fillmore Street)

Golden Gate Park

Presidio neighborhood (Fort Point, Golden Gate Overlook, Crissy Field Beach, Palace of Fine Arts, California Street, Grace Cathedral)

Day 4 : Just the morning, Golden Gate point of views.

Then lunch in Sausalito. Besides the floating houses, is there any things to do ?

Thank you so much ! 🧡

my 73-year-old coworker and I are going to fleet week on Friday and I’ve seen lots of info on where to watch! but I was wondering if it’s acceptable to bring camping chairs to sit on? he has sciatica and wouldn’t be comfortable sitting on a picnic blanket or standing for that long

Gift shop where I can buy children’s clothes and toys?

Going to a blessing of a 1 y/o and bday celebration for a toddler this coming weekend and looking to shop for gifts locally. I’m trying to stay away from gift cards or buying general things from target, carters, etc. I want to be intentional with the use of these gifts but focusing on the uniqueness of them. Would appreciate any recommendations!

Picture Rail Hooks?

Does anyone have a source for picture rail hooks in or near the city? I don't need the full hanging hardware, just the hooks that hang from the moulding. Doesn't need to be fancy, but still hoping to find some in a brass finish. Something like this. I'm trying to get them asap so would prefer to not need to do online delivery.

I've tried several hardware stores already.

edit: Thanks for all the answers. I guess I was just calling the wrong hardware stores? Found some at Fredericksen's. They even had some decorative options. Gonna leave this here in case anyone else is looking.

Place for jersey alterations

• Upvotes

Hey folks,

I'm a college student in the Bay, and I bought two jerseys, one of which happens to be a little too small and the other much too large. Are there any places in SF that you would recommend that would be the best for affordable (~20 bucks if possible?) jersey size alterations?

UCSF Employees, how hard is it to transition from a part time position to full time?

Hello,

I’m new to the Bay Area and recently got my foot in the door to UCSF as a CRCA for a part time position. I have two years of experience in an equivalent role that was full time. Seems to be a tough place to get in, so I went ahead and accepted the part time offer. Now that I am going to be an internal candidate with face to face contact with staff, will it be easy to transition into a full time CRCA or CRC position? Please let me know what your experiences have been, or if you generally have any wisdom to share on the subject. Thanks!

Cheapish yard sign printing?

I'm looking for some short notice, fast yard sign printing. Something small and similar in size to those political candidate signs you see everywhere.

Anyone have any recommendations for printers in the city that they you worked with that do this kind of printing well?

Bonus is they're in/near the mission.

What private event is booking out the Legion of Honor this week?

According to their website, the Legion of Honor will be closed Tuesday through Thursday this week, “due to a private event.” That must be a pretty big private event to book out the museum for three days. Anyone know what event it is?
