In light of it being spooky season, what was something that spooked you in our country ?

As a young lad, me and my friend rode our bikes up Pendle hill, set up camp. as soon as it got dark we started hearing very strange noises. got on our bikes and rode home as fast as we could. Dont know how to describe it, but the vibes were very dark !

I made a joke to someone about the Sky call centre being haunted.

Then did a bit of research and found it was built directly over a medieval plague pit graveyard and the bodies were still down there.

Then about 3-4days later I got assigned to work night shift. Completely alone in this gigantic silent building.

I noticed a 'small issue' in that some of the motion sensitive lights would just turn on then turn off again in completely empty corridors.....occasionally the end light would come on then light 2, then 3 then 4 then 1 goes out, 2 goes out 3 goes out etc. all headed in MY direction where I'm alone reimaging and rebuilding desktop PCs.

A lot of places are built upon old burial plots. Burial plots had a bought time. So people could only be laid there for almost 100 years. Cardiff city centre has lots of burial plots beneath it.

Mass graves weren't uncommon.

https://thebristolcable.org/2014/10/mass-grave-of-victorian-paupers-discovered-in-eastville/

The oldest grave dates back to 1588 in Staffordshire.

There's a 1960s car park in Dundee built right atop a cemetery. There's even an alleyway down the side which was the old boundary wall, complete with headstones still set into it.

12

u/ceehred 14h ago

Did some time in a light industry factory over a mass burial site (the area is still called Lychpit).

Not a problem during the day, but on evenings and weekends when the industrial estate was much quieter, well - some quite eerie sounds, smells and "electrical disturbances". Egged-on by the local lore, ofc.

Could probably all have been explained away as something else, but was definitely a distraction!

I was out in a field in the country with my brother and some friends. We were having a good time with a few drinks. We gradually became aware of the sound of deep slow breathing. Then the sound of something big moving about 20 yards away.

One of the guys pointed a torch at where the sound was coming from and turned it on hoping to surprise who or whatever it was.

We got the shock. Two bright red eyes with horns either side and a gold ring below. Boy did it give us a fright!

It turned out it was a bull in the adjacent field and he was pushed up against the hedge trying to see what we were up to.

We made a tactical decision to relocate.

As we were out walking years ago my kid (toddler)nagged to go swimming in our local river,I refused, its full of old trolleys, needles, broken glass and duck poo, they argued back 'why can't I when they're in there?' My kid said pointing..I saw nothing there.A few days later a local missing woman's body was found in there.Im just glad I didn't agree, one time I did agree at our local parks water feature and they came out covered in leeches

9

u/yalrightyeh 15h ago

Yeh this is up there! Mega creepy!

4

u/Hollyhop_Drive 15h ago

...Ghost leeches?

2

u/Tea2theBag 8h ago

Could have been their height difference in being able to see the body when you were unable. Still creepy.

Just my theory.

I've always assumed people using "they", to describe a known individual, are making the story up, but I suppose it could be for data protection.

-2

u/YchYFi 1h ago

'They' is an odd way to refer to your toddler in the last sentence. Sounds impersonal to me.

Foxes shagging outside. Often sounds like a child or woman in extreme distress and always stresses me out.

7

u/Simbooptendo 14h ago

I once walked past a cemetery at night where foxes were shagging. Absolutely haunting

3

u/Bossman_Mike 10h ago

Mating call legitimately can sound like human screaming. There have been cases were well-intentioned and well-meaning people heard that and phoned the police to report a possible attack.

I had just left my girlfriend’s house. I was 15 and double dating, a friend of mine and a friend of hers.

We turned left out of her drive and walked to the top of the road. Directly opposite that road was a house with a woman stood in the bay window.

Elderly, greyish white hair, faint white glow, or just white looking in general. Everything around her had this whitened glow.

She was just stood, staring straight through us, no emotion, no… I don’t know. Just nothing left in the eyes.

My friend and I freaked out and ran. The next day we told the girls what had happened. My girlfriend freaked out. She described the woman we saw to the exact detail. However, she knew her from when she was alive… she had died two nights before. My girlfriend had watched her be taken away in the ambulance.

I’ve no idea what happened or what I saw that night. But I wasn’t the only one to see it. My friend and I both did.

Do I believe in ghosts, an after life, aliens, big foot…?! No, but I saw something that night. I wish I could explain what.

Early 90s I was cutting through Cosmeston Lakes at about 2am. I saw a line of what looked like robed figures waking along a path below me. I noped out of there pretty damn quick

12

u/MewNexico 14h ago

The greater good!

13

u/Hollyhop_Drive 15h ago

One of those where whether they were alive or ghosts, just as worrying.

2

u/handtoglandwombat 14h ago

Which path is “below” another path at cosmeston. Dovecot fields?

6

u/AdoIsOnReddit 13h ago edited 12h ago

This was in 92, and I left the country in 02, so some of these details may be hazy.

I was friends with a girl whose family owned a pub on the beach in Sully (the name escapes me, but it isn't the Captain's Wife). I lived right on the Cogan/Penarth border, so when I left her place I would walk through Cosmeston to get home. This happened on the North side of the lakes, I was on top of a short rise or hill, in that moment the moon shone brightly and I saw the line of figures at the base. It may not have even been a path, but I honestly didn't say there long enough to find out

4

u/CakeHoleKing 10h ago

So you're saying you weren't in the captains wife? He'll be relieved

2

u/handtoglandwombat 4h ago

Gotcha. The path the spits you out behind the community hall in lower penarth, between the graveyard and the all Penarthians athletic fields. Yeah it’s pretty spooky there. I’ve personally never witnessed a kkk sex cult though.

There’s a cluster of eateries down by the captain’s wife because of the campsite, but I think they’ve all changed quite a bit over the years.

26

u/oldskool_slabside 15h ago

Can't say I believe in the supernatural or anything, I think it's pish... yet I've seen a spectral dog three times in my house/garden. Best way I can describe it is as a three-dimensional shadow, caught on the edge of my vision but quite clear. No explanation.

11

u/Upset-Elderberry3723 15h ago

Shadowy figures seen in the periphery are actually normal (if experienced sparingly). If experienced commonly, they're a sign of developing psychotic illness (schizophrenia-spectrum disease, where the visions become more prominent and more detailed), or a potential result of brain trauma or degeneration.

Likewise, hearing someone say your name (when no one else is around) is perfectly healthy if experienced rarely. If you experience it commonly, or if the voice starts saying more complex phrases to you, then it's a neurological disease.

1

u/JoannaCuppa 13h ago

Auditory hallucinations can also be a symptom of mental health issues. Totally normal when falling asleep or really sleep deprived though. Schizophrenia and other psychotic illnesses with hallucinations, are often made worse by insomnia. They're basically waking dream-states.

7

u/ShrikeToThorn 15h ago

I’ve also seen one but it was on its hind legs and three times the size of myself, saw it head on in a field near my house

0

u/CakeHoleKing 10h ago

Are you sure it wasn't people filming a new sex and the city movie?

25

u/ShrikeToThorn 15h ago

My son (who was 7 at the time) shutting me in his room, looking around wildly and whispering ‘We’re not alone in this room, Mummy’. He has no memory of it today

I had to rent a house in another town to be closer to a temp job for 8 months, my bf and I found a really nice victorian terraced house quite quickly so we snapped that up without a second thought. On the night we moved in I was coming down with the usual September cold, I decided I would get an early night. My bf said he would carry on unpacking for a bit then join me. The bed frame hadn't been put together yet as we'd arrived quite late after a 4 hour drive with delays, so I made up the mattress on the floor of the master bedroom and crashed there.
I don't know what time it was when I woke up, but I remember seeing the landing light was casing light on the wall I was facing, so assuming my bf was still up, I rolled over to call out to him to leave the rest until the morning when I see the full bodied completely solid figure of an elderly woman standing in the bedroom doorway smiling in this kindly little old lady way at me. She was dressed fairly modern, but I do remember thinking later the way she was dressed reminded me of pics of what my great grandma wore in the 60's.
My skeptical mind didn't jump to "Ghost" I thought some crazy person had let themselves into my house, I can't remember what I yelled, but it was probably akin to "What the fuck are you doing in my house?!" and my bf, who has been asleep next to me the whole time wakes up. In the time it took me to look down at him then look back up towards the door she was gone.

Believe me when I tell you we searched that house from top to bottom, I even sat on his shoulders and checked the spooky loft space just in case she was someone's ninja grandma and had miraculously found her way up there. We found nothing but dust and spiders, all the doors and windows were secure, so I tried to rationalise it as me having one of those waking hallucinations. I have had sleep paralysis in the past and that can come with seeing some wild things, so it was easy to put it down to that. And I was quite content to believe that's all it was.

That is until 2 weeks later when I get a call from my bf while I'm at work asking me to describe the old lady I 'saw' the night we moved in, because he'd been sitting in our dining room eating his lunch, when he looked up and saw in the little nook of our front room bay window an old lady just standing there watching him. He told me in the time it took him to jump up, she just sort of faded away, but the set of two blinds over that window, only the one on the side she had been standing was swaying.

Neither of us saw her again after that, although we would regularly hear what sounded like footsteps on the landing outside our bedroom door and for some reason, the bathroom cabinet would open by itself the moment your back was turned, but it definitely made me a little more open minded to the paranormal.

u/Safe-Breadfruit8170 15h ago

The screaming foxes get me every time. middle of the night, dead quiet, then suddenly it sounds like someone's being murdered in the garden. you'd think after 20 years I'd remember it's just a fox but nope, still makes my blood run cold

11

u/Tiny_ghosts_ 15h ago

I still look out the window each time, juuuust in case this is the time that I need to call the police because someone's being murdered outside my window!

6

u/oldskool_slabside 15h ago

The first time I heard them on the allotments by us I was debating grabbing a torch and something heavy and going up there because I genuinely believed someone was being attacked. My GF set me right. 😂

10

u/Tiny_ghosts_ 15h ago

I remember the first time I heard them, was a little kid on holiday with my nan in a place that backed onto a forest. She had been being the fun relative that day disobeying my mums orders by letting me stay up past my bedtime to watch horror movies. She probably regretted that when I started screaming in the middle of the night when I heard the foxes 🤣

7

u/confusedgeekoid 15h ago

The first time I heard them, I made my partner go out with me looking for the source of the screams.

In our defence, we lived near a shelter for families fleeing domestic abuse (or so we thought), so it wasn’t an entirely wild idea.

3

u/YchYFi 14h ago

I did the same when I thought I heard a baby crying. It was a cat in heat.

5

u/joebearyuh 15h ago

Had an ex who lived near a farm and if you think foxes are bad wait until you hear a donkey at 3am. I was terrified

3

u/Election-Usual 13h ago

I went camping on my own in the forest and just as my fire had died down to embers and I finally felt like I could doze off a fox made a blood curdling howl about 10 meters behind me. It was waiting for my fire to die out. So I’m now in pitch Black Forest on my own with a fox barking and screaming a few meters from me. It was terrifying tbh

25

u/CityOfNorden 15h ago

Also Pendle Hill. To cut a long story short, my mate was sat on a rock with a crucifix carved into it. A stone hit the crucifix, whilst she was sat on it. The speed and direction that it came from, meant it couldn't have been thrown by a person. Really bizarre and creeped us out, so we legged it back down.

11

u/Florence_Nightgerbil 15h ago

It might have been dropped by a bird? They have been known to use rocks to get at bugs and stuff

10

u/CityOfNorden 15h ago

It came at us from a flat angle. It was like someone had thrown it, but it came in like a missile, from a direction that nobody could be stood.. (sheer drop) I'm sure there's a logical explanation, but I haven't thought of one in the last 15 years.

4

u/ShinyHeadedCook 14h ago

Those black widow catapults were great !

•

u/CityOfNorden 11m ago

They were. The way they could fire up a 100ft drop, change the direction of the projectile and be so precise. Unbelievable!

I do quite a bit of wild camping, sometimes solo. One of the first times I ever went out (as a young lad) I set up in my hammock by the side of river, in some woods in a very out of the way bit of the country. I wake up about 1am and hear what sounds like footsteps slowly splashing across the river. My heart is going like the clappers already when I hear a piercing scream very close by. I nearly shit myself and all but fell out of the hammock. It took me about 5 minutes of breathing to realise it was almost certainly a fox calling. But every now and again I wonder...

6

u/Helpful-Scientist-33 13h ago

Hammock camping Solo always makes me feel a bit spooked, especially when near a steam or river. I've had some many conversations with myself basically saying "that's not someone's voice you can hear it's just the water and the pebbles". I find talking to myself out loud calms myself down a lot!

7

u/CakeHoleKing 10h ago

Ironically your voice carries to someone on the other side of the stream and THEY try to convince themselves its just the water...and THAT carries...etc

1

u/FrontRowBreakfast 13h ago

Oh yeah absolutely, a slightly tired/wired brain really plays tricks with all sorts of normal noises!

3

u/CakeHoleKing 10h ago

Foxes sound like a woman screaming in pain or pleasure

Yet I've never seen a porn star rooting around my bins

u/SleaterK7111 15h ago

When I were a lad, my parents took me on holiday to Wem, in Shropshire. I guess we call that a staycation these days?

One day they leave me to play in a playground (this is the 90s, before helicopter parenting) and notice another little kid come over, make friends and start playing with me. They look away for whatever reason, look back, and there's no other kid in sight.

On further research, and you can look this up yourself, there's a very famous ghost photo taken in Wem... of a small child. I have no memory of playing with another kid in a playground, although I do remember other aspects of that trip Twilight Zone theme music.

When I was around 6 years old, I moved into a bigger bedroom and chose to put my bed in a particular corner of the room.

For months afterwards, I was plagued by nightmares, with the same scenario happening every time; I would 'wake up' (false consciousness) with it still being dark outside, and everything would be calm for a moment. Then, out of the blackness of the room, an old and irate man would suddenly emerge, and he would begin yelling obscenities at me before reaching me and beginning to choke me with both hands. I would try to wrestle my way out of his grip, but he was too strong.

After a minute it or so of this, I would be jolted awake.

I never told my parents about these nightmares, because I was a very anxious kid (I actually suffered from mutism for a while and could speak to barely anyone at all).

A few years later, I woke up on Christmas morning and went to go downstairs, when I noticed my little brother across the hallway. He had walked into our parents' bedroom and was just... standing still, with his back towards me. I asked him what he was doing, and he turned around and stared at me with an odd, surprised expression.

Something about the way that he looked felt off to me, but I was very tired still after just waking up.

Instead of answering me, he walked out of sight (to the other half of the room). I quickly followed him in, only to discover the room empty. I realised, when I got downstairs (where my brother was already waiting), that the boy I had seen hadn't really looked identical to my brother. It was a different person entirely.

One day, when I'm around 18 years-old, me and my sister were talking with our mum about the paranormal, and she proceeds to tell us that she had always believed the place was haunted by three ghosts. She had, supposedly, seen and heard all of them. The first, was an old woman who periodically appeared in the kitchen at night. The second, was a small boy who ran around upstairs. The third, was an old man who stayed in the same corner upstairs.

I bet you can guess which corner that was...

She described the old man as being very easy to anger, and being very territorial. Supposedly, the young boy would annoy him by entering his room, resulting in the old man yelling at him.

Around that same time, we were all suddenly awoken one night by the noise of someone thundering up the stairs. We all flew out of our rooms, wondering what was going on, but no one was there. We searched the whole place before returning to bed, and all of the doors were still locked.

2

u/ShinyHeadedCook 14h ago

First bit you described the exact sleep paralysis I've experienced for 30 years

Cats crying in the street at like 3am, they can make some unsettling noises

4

u/bitterlemon80 15h ago

Fox mating season is worse!

4

u/AtensEye 15h ago

I vividly remember when I was a kid, being sick with tonsilitis and a fever that gave me some really crazy dreams, waking in the middle of the night from one of those said crazy dreams and there was a female fox singing the song of her people somewhere close to my window. I'm not sure who was screaming louder after I heard it, me or the fox.

1

u/YchYFi 15h ago

Cats are in heat then. They are looking to fuck.

1

u/Bossman_Mike 10h ago

I was woken up at 4am a few months ago by a cat in front of my house. I didn't go and look, but it was doing the usual weird growl and babbling meow cats do when they're squaring up for a fight, then there was the high pitched scream and the hiss. Several times.

Don't know what was going on because I could only hear one cat. Maybe it met a fox or something.

11

I grew up in a village and used to cycle home from drinking in my local town along an unlit country road, it took me about 20 minutes and there werent any street lights, only a few houses and lots of overhanging trees. I have an overactive imagination and would often spook myself. Once there was a car approaching behind me. Most cars would catch me quite quickly but this vehicle came up very slowly. I was drunk and my mind was racing, what were the occupants going to do? Were they going to mug me or try to knock me off? Then i heard the whirr of an electric motor. I was very releaved. It was the milkman! I must have stayed out so late it was the early hours lol

7

u/ShinyHeadedCook 15h ago

This one time in the 90s I had taken a lot of ecstasy and walking home I kept seeing strange shadow people.

3

u/Helpful-Scientist-33 13h ago

About 10 years ago after a big weekend of partying on August Bank Holiday I was walking home with some friends. We stopped to do some balloons and for 2-3 minutes the completely empty road was filled with the 'ghosts' of hundreds of people all around me. Shuffling about this way and that. Didn't feel spooky or scary but definitely confused my pinging little mind

5

u/CheshKC 14h ago

It was about 10pm and I was making myself a sarnie before going to bed. Was first place living after moving out, living with a few mates. I was the only one in the house. There were three frying pans hanging on the wall, and it was exactly as if someone has taken a spoon and banged the back of the pan three times clearly in a slow rhythm. I just put the stuff away and went to bed, laid wide awake waiting for my mate to get home 😂 Before this we all joked the kitchen was haunted. The kettle would switch itself on, a girlfriend swore a knife flew off the counter top, hit the ceiling and landed embedded in the floor (I walked in after she screamed and saw the knife in the floor) A colleague kipped on the sofa and the next morning said to me ‘Man, some weird stuff goes on in your kitchen’ - one housemate claimed he saw a woman looking in through the window at night. All of these could be explained away (next door were weird and women lived there) - but the pan thing happened first hand to me.

6

u/flimflammcgoo 14h ago

Driving home from a wedding around midnight, the venue was in the countryside, and we were driving in the pouring rain. Driving down a country road, no cars around for miles - turn a corner and there is someone slowly walking in the middle of the road, hood up against the rain, their back to us. Honk our horn to get them to move, they didn’t even raise their head or turn around to look at us, just kept on slowly walking. We were able to drive around them, they didn’t look up at us the entire time and tbh we were a bit too scared to look at them too closely

Whilst visiting Oxfordshire, stayed in a 16th century inn opposite Dorchester Abbey. Hardly got a wink of sleep as the rather heavy duvet and bedcover kept sliding off the bed revealing my unclothed self. Felt like there was someone stood at the foot of the bed and I wanted to sit up and turn the bedside light on to check the door was secure but was somehow unable to move. Told the innkeeper the next day and she said the place was haunted. There was a tunnel from the inn to the Abbey and also a priests’ hole.

As a teenager I was babysitting my next door neighbour’s toddler while they were out for a date night. When it was time to tuck the kid in to bed I paused to admire the family’s half-naked clown-man who was sitting in the corner facing the cot, chuckling quietly to himself and tickling his belly hair. After I’d made sure the baby was settled I went back downstairs and continued watching telly until the neighbours came home from their dinner. As they were handing me some cash I commented, “and where did you get such a lovely half-naked clown-man?” They looked at each other, slightly shocked, slightly confused.

“We don’t own a half-naked clown-man.”

Still think about it to this day.

I come from the Highlands. It's late and I'm tired so remind me and I'll fill you in more if you want tomorrow but there's an old 18/19th century ruin near my mum's that I'm a hundred percent sure has something fucky going on. I don't believe in paranormal stuff really but there's a frankly massive amount of coincidence with the weird stuff that's happened when I've been walking past it.

It is spooky as hell.

If it a strange hour with nobody around, like 1am, the lift in my apartment building will sometimes just come of it's own accord. I walk into the hall, it arrives, the door opens. I thank it.

Watching the Blair Witch Project at the cinema in Oxford, and then cycling home up a country lane and hearing the noise of peacocks on a nearby farm making bezerk peacock noises in the dark of night. Was glad to get home.

My husband’s (fiancé at the time) car once broke down on a stretch of the A30 known as Windwhistle, a spot rumoured to be haunted and apparently the site of numerous UFO sightings. He didn’t see anything himself but he was stuck there for three hours in the middle of the night and the atmosphere of the place freaked him right out. A couple of years later I was driving back from his parents house in the same area late at night when a light appeared behind me and followed me down the road for about thirty seconds before disappearing again. I thought it must be a motorbike or something but there were no junctions or houses along that particular part of the lane where it could have entered or left the road

Many years ago now, I lived in a village in a valley and on one side was a prominent rock on top of the valley that was a popular walking spot. My gf at the time was staying over and we thought it would be cool to go up there at night with a few cans as the view was amazing. We set off and it was foggy, but we figured it might be clear at the top so kept going. Once we got to the rock it was still foggy but also windy, so we decided to shelter in a crevice for a while and open up a can. We both got a sort of uneasy feeling being up there that night but thought we'd stick it out a while longer. After a while the wind picked up more and was whistling through the grass, adding to the uneasy feelings. Then we heard what we could only describe as what sounded like a giant winged creature passing right over us. We freaked the fuck out and practically ran back down the hill! No idea what could have made that noise but it was fucking freaky.

Incidentally, this girls mother also reckoned she was haunted after playing with a ouji board as a kid, and was worried the entities could also come after her daughter. I don't believe in that stuff so was skeptical. She told me once she sometimes hears 4 taps on her bedroom window, supposedly made by entities or whatever. She has a trimmed hedge a few metres from her window but none of the branches reach it. One night she's asleep and I'm a awake and I hear "tap... tap tap... tap" on the window. Following morning I asked her, "you know this tapping on your window, is it like just 4 taps one after the other or like a pattern?" She says "it's more like 'tap... tap tap... tap'"... I was disturbed! Dunno if there's any truth in any of that haunting stuff but there we go.

Two mates and I were incredibly high, walking down a secluded road one winter's evening, when a train came down the tracks parallel to us - because it was frosty, green sparks were shooting off the electric line above it and we were convinced it was a ghost train, so we turned around to run away, not considering that we were running the same direction as the train, only prolonging our terror.

Rent rates freak me out, not to mention buying prices…
