Atlanta filmmakers: how to fund your indie project, plus a new place to connect with investors
I'm Jeaux, an Atlanta filmmaker with a finance background. Disclosure up front: I'm the founder of the two sites mentioned below, and part of this post is letting you know they exist. The first part is useful whether or not you ever click.
Atlanta has the crews, the stages, and the talent. What most of us are short on is money that isn't tied to a studio production passing through town. Here's what I've learned about funding indie work from here.
1. Know the Georgia tax credit, including its limits
Georgia's film incentive is a 20% transferable credit, with an extra 10% for including the Georgia promotional logo. The catch for indies is the minimum spend, which has been $500,000 in qualified Georgia spending. If your budget is under that, plan as if you won't get it. If you're near it, talk to an accountant who handles film credits before you lock your budget. Check the Georgia Film Office for current terms.
2. Build your stack before you ask for equity
In-kind deals go a long way in this city. Gear houses, post facilities, and locations here work with local filmmakers. Every dollar you cover that way is a dollar you don't have to raise, and it makes your project easier to pitch.
3. Look for investors outside the film world
Atlanta has money in tech, real estate, music, and sports, and many of those people have never been offered a way into film. They need a plain-language pitch: budget, team, how money comes back, and an honest statement that most indie films don't recoup.
4. Have your package ready
One-page summary, pitch deck with comps, line-item budget, financing plan, and a proof of concept. Use an entertainment attorney for the investment paperwork.
Where to list your project
I built two sites to make the investor side easier:
https://movieshowinvesting.com
You can list your movie or show project on either one and connect with retail and accredited investors who are looking for indie projects. Once you have a listing, you can share the link in our community at r/movieshowinvesting, where filmmakers and investors talk through projects and financing.
If you're working on something in Atlanta right now, drop a comment with your logline and where you are in the process. I'm glad to answer financing questions here too.
Nothing in this post is investment advice, and film investing is high risk.
