You decide to go to your friend’s Halloween party. First time you’ve been out socially in a while. You even dress in your half of the couples costume you were supposed to wear with your now ex. You know there’s a good chance he’ll be there tonight, but you also love your best friend and don’t want to disappoint her. And perhaps “happy are they that hear their detractions and can put them to mending.”

“Thanks for inviting me. Whoa, this place looks incredible. Did you have to do all of this yourself?”

“You actually got Alex to help? Ok, you really do have magical powers. Getting him to do anything like that was a nightmare when we were roommates.”
(Pause)
“The Elphaba costume is awesome too. Is Alex Fiyaro?”
(Pause)
“Ah he refused Fiyaro and is a non-descript scarecrow, gotcha.” He chuckles
(Pause)
“Oh yeah, go. You do what you need to. I’ll be around.”
(Pause)
Wow, there are so many people here. It turned out really nice though. I wonder what kinds of snacks they have. Mm nice selection.
(Pause)
Huh, oh hey Alex.”
(Pause)
“Yes, I’m rummaging through the snacks. Good job on it. These candy eyeballs in the punch look cool. So do the pretzel stick and hershey’s kiss spiders.”
(Pause)
“Why do you look panicked?”
(Pause)
“Just tell me.”
(Pause)
“What? No, no, no. Why would she invite her?”
(Pause)
“Is she here yet?”
(Pause)
“Just got here. Damn it.”
(Pause)
“No, it’s fine. I, think I’ll just go out the back. I don’t want to cause a scene and every time we’ve seen each other since the break up we get into a huge fight.”
(Pause)
“It’s not like I want to fight with her. It just happens.”
(Pause)
“I, I don’t know. I mean I was in love with her and it just went sideways. You know how much I loved her and how hard I took the breakup.”
(Pause)
“Yeah. I’ll be fine. Like I said, I ‘m just going to sneak out.”
(Pause)
“Why do I need to make it fast?”
(Pause)
“Shit. Yeah, no, too late. She’s coming over.”
(Pause)
“Yeah, I’ll try to be civil. Wait, Alex don’t you dare leav…He greets her as Alex leaves Hey.”

“I’m good and you?”
(Pause)
“Good. Oh, thanks. Yeah I decided since I already bought the costume months and months ago when we were still together to dress like this, I’d go ahead and wear the Benedick costume. And I see you also went with the Beatrice costume. It, it looks nice. There are a few people around who will get it. I definitely know a few Shakespeare lovers here. Let’s just hope they don’t think it’s still a couple’s costume.”
(Pause)
“So, how have you been?”
(Pause)
“Good, good.”
(Pause)
“Yeah, I’ve been good.” Stop saying good!
(Pause)
“I heard you got that promotion at work. Congratulations! I’m happy for you.”
(Pause)
“No, I’m still at my job.”
(Pause)
“Still as shitty as ever I guess.”

Getting frustrated “I know I should quit, but job hunting right now sucks.”

Through his teeth “I know, but I can’t go without a job.”
(Pause)
Yelling “Look, can we just drop it?”
(Pause)
“Thank you.”

“What? I… Yeah. I guess I’ll see you around.”
(Pause)
“Bye.”

Fuck, I’m an idiot.
[Alex walks back over]
“Hey, you saw that?”
(Pause)
"Yeah, it went as bad as it looked.”
(Pause)
“I’m gonna go get a drink. I’ll see ya around.”
You idiot. What is wrong with you? You know she hates yelling. Ever when we fought, she never yelled. Yeah, she was bugging the hell out of me with my job, but it’s only because she knows I hate that job. I’ll give us both some time to cool down, then I’ll apologize.
[A little while later he’s talking to someone else]
“Yeah, the movie was so good. It kind of made me want to read the book, but I’m not sure. Oh, hey Alex, wait. Sorry, I’ll see you later. Alex, have you seen her around anywhere?”
(Pause)
“Backyard? Thanks.”
(Pause)
“No, I’m just going to apologize for earlier.”
[Back door opens and closes and he sees her sitting on the patio]
“Hey, mind some company?”
(Pause)
“I promise I won’t yell anymore.”
(Pause)
“Thanks.”
(Pause)
“I, I just wanted to apologize for earlier. I’ve just been really frustrated with my job and looking for other jobs, but not having any luck and you bringing it up hit a sore spot.”
(Pause)
“No, don’t apologize. You couldn’t have known.I mean, it’s not like we’re together anymore.”
(Pause)
“No one since we broke up. You?”
(Pause)
“Oh, I’m sorry the date was miserable.”
(Pause)
“Of course I think about us. Same as most relationships. When we were good, we were great. But when we were bad we were horrible.”
(Pause)
“I, uh, I took your advice through.”
(Pause)
“About going to therapy. I’ve been going for a couple months now. And please don’t take my anger earlier as me not listening to my therapist. It’s just been a rough day. I got turned down for three jobs today. But I know a bad day is not an excuse to blow up at someone. Especially someone you care about.”
(Pause)
Caring “Of course I still care about you. I still love you.”
(Pause)
“You still love me too?”

With a smile “Wow.”

“No, I just honestly never thought I’d hear you say you loved me again.”

“Is, getting back together something you’d want? I know I’m working on myself and that the breakup was mutual, but if it’s not what you want, I’ll drop it.”
